Fontana scored a spectacular late winner for Ascoli on a bicycle kick. The only problem is that this will definitely go down as an own goal, because I think his effort was going wide before it deflected into the net.

    Ascoli win 3-2.

    It's a debate: Fontana's goal or an own-goal?

It's a bike.. you gotta give it to him

Fontana makes the bench for a Cup match against Sampdoria. Unfortunately, they already trail 1-0. This is a Paramount+ match, should he come on.

Fontana was released at the end of January. Philly still own his rights in he were to land back in MLS. It was rumored a while back - before he signed with Ascoli - that Cincy and Montreal were interested. Who knows if that is true now.

what a bummer that move was....I feel like he had a ton of potential a few years ago....but hasn't played in soo long...not sure where he is at now

surprised he couldnt get off the bench in serie B......hopefully he can get to a team that will simply let him play......

He played a couple of matches early in the season. But the easiest answer is the manager that signed him and liked his potential, Andrea Sottil, was swept away by Udinese. A new guy came in, Cristian Bucchi, and he signed some Serie B retreads and Serie A loanees thinking he could move them into a promotion spot. They started off decently but have plummeted since Christmas, I think, winless in 6 (5 losses) and now sit 13th in the table. That manager was canned last week and longtime Serie B manager, Roberto Breda hired. Fontana’s release was by mutual consent. I’m assuming Fontana saw the writing on the wall and asked to be released or Breda came in and said I’m not going to use you. I think Fontana is a decent player. Certainly capable of playing and succeeding in Serie B. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him pop up in MLS. I’m sure someone would be interested and could work a minimal trade for his rights. I’ve never been that high on Fontana but have appreciated his play. He’s always had a Mike Grella-like feel to him…a fan favorite who’s gritty, decently skilled, and be useful and productive in the right system.

Dutch Eerste Divisie table-toppers. Zwolle and Heracles are clear promotion favorites baring a massive collapse. It reads like it’s a short-term deal until the end of the season with a 1-year option. I believe it says he’s been on a three week trial.

It's tough joining a first-place team midseason. Managers typically don't want to make too many changes to a lineup that is winning (especially when the last win was 13-0).

While their lead on first place is just 3 points, they have an 11 point cushion on promotion as the top 2 go up.

It might be one of those things where Fontana has to impress in training to build his case. It might not reflect in playing time. Then if he can remain with the club next season, the preseason might be an opportunity for more minutes.

His Italian passport really helps him in Holland because Zwolle won't pay him the high non-EU minimum salary.
