And they concede a 94th minute equalizer. Chase caught ball-watcing a bit instead of hustling to mark the open men at the far post as he probably should have done. Won't be a good film session. 3-3.
Anrie Chase 🇯🇵🇺🇸 (VfB Stuttgart) vs Borussia Mönchengladbachhttps://t.co/kpvdKkHjA4— USA Ballers Abroad ⚽️ (@USBallersAbroad) September 15, 2024
He was interviewed on the ESPN+ feed after the cup match a few weeks back. Basically he sounds like an American kid except for a few diction and grammatical idiosyncransies - bits of Japanese creeping in. I remember laughing when he said "I received some criticize" which is something only a Japanese person would say in English lol. Ironically Chase has spoken of struggling to be comfortable speaking Japanese when he moved back to Japan for middle school, but sounds like any other native speaker now. That was also when he first played organized soccer - he seems like a kid who always enjoys taking on new challenges and interests.
I'm guessing things might be evolving but Japan tends not to be welcoming to people of other cultures and colors. People of Korean descent are often considered foreigners even after many generations. Definitely worth talking to him about joining USA set-up!
When Zion Suzuki came around I was thinking about that also, especially after what happened at the AFC Asian Cup. Unfortunately, that's just the way they are, its almost like a norm. We could really use Suzuki, but I don't think there was ever a chance of getting him, as for Chase I actually believe we would have a chance at getting him, just need some poch magic.
Reminder that there is a dual nats thread in USA Men where questions about his national team choices belong. He’s a Yank for this forum.
That’s what people say but I’ve never been treated better than when I was in Japan. And they badly need more people. At current birth rates they are on pace to have half the population than they do at current by the end of the century.
Yeah - not welcoming isn’t accurate but what makes one Japanese is complicated. You as an American may be treated a little differently than someone who is Japanese American, for example. He’s right about some people’s attitudes toward Korean Japanese historically but he would be wrong about modern day animosity towards Korea and Korean culture. Things have changed a ton and they’ve had non ethnically Japanese play for the national team for a while.
A lot of people still have this image of Japan as a homogeneous ethnostate with a very rigid ethnocentric idea of what it means to be a "real" Japanese person (i.e. "you will never be accepted as one of them"). Unfortunately this is also promoted by European white nationalists with anime avis on social media as a positive example of the benefits of restricting immigration. In reality modern Japanese society has gotten used to immigration and multiethnic integration - your average day will include interactions with Chinese waiters and Bangladeshi store clerks, and sports fans log on to Yahoo! News to excitedly check in on the latest exploits of Yu Darvish, Rui Hachimura, Tomokazu Harimoto (table tennis), and Abdul Hakim Sani Brown (track). It just isn't a big deal anymore particularly in the sports world. Sure there are isolated incidents like Zion Suzuki getting abused by anonymous online trolls - which was roundly denounced even by detractors of his play, far more strongly than racism is handled in places like Spain or Italy. It's sort of anachronistic to suggest Anrie Chase would spurn Japan because he doesn't feel fully Japanese there - I mean he is already very popular among both fans and media there, in part due to a charismatic personality. He may well switch to the US but it would be due to the respective depth charts and a genuine connection to America rather than any antipathy for Japan.
Well, he seems like a very promising player, and either Japan or the United States will be glad to have him represent them, however he decides.
Came off the bench: Dreifacher Wechsel beim #VfB in der 69. Minute: Für Ermedin #Demirovic, Maximilian #Mittelstädt und Jeff #Chabot kommen nun Fabian #Rieder, Dan-Axel #Zagadou und Anrie #Chase ins Spiel.#VfBBVB 3:0 (69.)— VfB Stuttgart (@VfB) September 22, 2024 Leading 4-1 in the 84th.
Chase played the whole match today against Hoffenheim - went pretty well with a FotMob 7.4 and a couple of bombed shots. Stuttgart equalized on a penalty that occurred after the originally announced stoppage time was over for 1-1. Which sucked for Matarazzo, whose job remains at risk, but was very fun for the Stuttgart group.
I travel to both Japan and Korea for work and I stand by my comments. I have no idea how Chase feels.
Did he pick up any kind of knock on Sunday? I know he played 90. @bshredder was he called for this window for Japan or not?
No, there was speculation that he would be added to the squad after Kota Takai (another 20-year-old CB) pulled out with injury, but Moriyasu opted for a different young defender who primarily plays right back.
