We keep starting these threads up and then BigSoccer keeps crashing... It's probably some conspiracy backed by MeridianFC. Anyway, I've really enjoyed them in the past and picked up lots of good recommendations, so I thought I'd start another. Some new bands/tracks/albums of interest to get thigns started: The Postal Service -- reminds me a lot of The Lightning Seeds. If you don't like lyrics like "I'm thinking it's a sign/that the freckles in our eyes/are mirror images/and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned" (from "Such Great Heights") then you might not like TPS. Frou Frou -- Imogen Heap sings over beats. "Breathe In" is a very catchy tune with a nice chorus. "Hear Me Out" is another good one I've been playing a lot. I've heard some of IH's solo stuff and this is quite different. I like it more. Alphaville -- Their "Crazy Show" 4CD fanclub set is out. I've listened to the first three and I'm impressed. It's far more lush and introspective than people who only remember "Big In Japan" will probably expect. Erlend Oye -- This guy's from Kings of Convenience. If you liked them, you might like his more electronic offering. If not, you probably won't. I'm not sure his lyrics/singing style really work well with electronic arrangements, but then again their remix album wasn't bad.
I like the KOC, but I didn't like this record at all. It certainly doesn't sound anything like them or, really, like the remix record. Speaking of, I always thought that that the remixes were really how the album should have sounded anyway. So not really "remixes" as much as they were just natural progressions for the songs.
Re: Re: Another dance/trance/techno/synthpop thread Yeah... I liked the remix record best of the three. Totally agree. "I Don't Know What I Can Save You From" is a dynamite track and WAY, WAY better on the remix record. Oh, one more name I meant to put on the first post: Conjure One -- I think this is one of the members of Delerium with a bunch of guest singers. They're well known for their remix of "Silence" but this is more conventional stuff. Still good, especially "The Center Of The Sun" w/Poe on vocals.
Don't know if any of you are in Boston but Groove Armada is coming to town I think the weekend after this one. A few big acts have been in town lately.
House music For those who need some real deal Chicago styled house, pick up "Classic and Rare La Collection Chapter 3". This is double CD is mixed by Laurent Garnier and Jori Hulkkonen. It amazing mix of house tracks. These fellas cook up the best France has to offer as far house goes. But don't mistake this for that tired a$$ Electro-Disco filter house music that has been in everyones face. Also anyone pick up Danny Tenaglia's new mix CD, I'm hearing good things!! If you have drop a review I would like to hear if its all its cracked up to be.
Anything on G-Stoned records. Kruder and Dorfmeister, Peace Orchestra, Tosca, etc, etc. It all rules. Anyone remember Sabres of Paradise?? I still listen to those guys.
I have his "I Care Because You Do" CD, which has some really cool tunes on it. I'm not an expert on this kind of stuff but if you like it you might want to try Autechre or Boards of Canada or maybe Funkstorung. Orbital did a really cool broadcast for Radio One in May 2002. It's one of my favorite DJ mixes. I don't think it's been packaged and sold but you can probably find it on eBay or somewhere if you're into bootlegs. Never heard of this one. Will check it out.
I actually just picked that up last night - it was on sale at Virgin. But I haven't even opened it yet + am not very familiar with the DJ's style. From what I heard at the listening station, it sounded solid - kinda mellow. BUt again, that was in the listening station. But for 16 bucks, double disc set (strange smell though!) I figured I'd go for the experiment. One thing I have heard about it- it's not so so much new material. I cannot personally attest to this though since I don't have their older CD's, but I think this might be a compilation of some of their older stuff.
Smokebelch il... Priceless. I like the way it's mixed on the Dreamstates Compilation and Euphoria CHilled compilation. I do like some G-Stoned/K7 stuff. I dig Tosca's new one and Suzuki. I like K&D sessions but didnt like their DJ Kicks. Some stuff though that you might like if you dig Kruder Dorfmeister is Dzihan & Kamien. They're off of Sixdegrees now (at last check) and always draw up comparisons. They're vienna based. I think if you dig G-Stoned Stuff, you should definitely check out Compost artists. They include Jazzanova, Koop, Beanfield, Minus 8, Truby Trio, etc. They're one of my favorite labels. And of course, check out ESL's Thievery Corporation. Sorry I went into the "chill" mold, Dave!
No apology needed, dude... I think it fits in well here. It's hard keeping up with all the chillout stuff -- it seems to be really hot right now. I'm currently listening to stuff like Urban Species ("Blanket"), Blue Six ("Very Good Friends"), everybody's favorite Zero 7 ("Destiny", "If You Can't Say No" w/Lenny Kravitz), and Esthero ("Indigo Boy"). There's a lot of good music out there. There's a new Smith & Mighty out I believe. I really liked "Big World Small World" but haven't heard the latest. Anybody got a review?
I don't have one for Smith & Mighty but hey, you like Blue Six? I have their Beautiful tomorrow CD and reviewed it on Amazon. If you dig them you have to pick up Miguel Migs Nude Tempo vol 1 if you don't already have it. It's pretty fresh! They're on the same label (Naked Music) and it's quality. For Beautiful Tomorrow, there were only a few tracks on the cd that I really dug - "Let's Do It Together" is awesome and I like "Music and Wine". Right on though -everyone digs Zero-7 these days. I did pick up their remix ep I think it is, but havne't had a chance to hear it yet. BUt of course, I'm still a big Air fan. Hey, are you into the Euphoria comps? I picked up Deeper Shades of Euphoria a few weeks ago and it's pretty good - I really like it. SOme nice mixes on it - trancy feel.
Way ahead of you, my friend. I just saw Koop live a few weeks ago and they were incredible. I like the new Theivery Corp, although it gets a bit too worldbeat at times. I just saw them do a DJ gig here in the city and it was shite. All bad house music (and I know what good house music is). But it was a lame venue and I have a feeling they sussed out the crowd and catered to them.
I don't know anything about the new Smith & Mighty, but "Bass Is Maternal" is on constant rotation in my room.
Personal all time favorites: James Brown is dead 2002 (H.a.z.a.r.d) Flesh is the fever (NY terrorist I believe) Execute (Neophyte) Kick and bass (Technoboy) Happy is voor Hobo's (homo's) (Body Lotion) XTC Love (Bertocucci Fernanzo) XTC Love (Tony Salmonelli ; Buzz Fuzz remix) Control the Universe (?) Name of the DJ (Chosen Few) Geleihoofd (?) Abbagabba (Riot Nation) We gotta connect (Modem; Warp Brothers remix) And a whole shitload of oldstyle, hardstyle and hardcore tracks of which I don't know name and/or producer name. Really too bad.
Anyone pick this Sasha album up? Friends tell me it's brilliant. I love Wavy Gravy - makes you want to really fly on the highway. Sasha has a sort of way of blending an ambient feel into the music that's something else - and Euphoria seems to be the label that IMO captures that. I first heard this mixed right after a pretty classic remix of Cafe Del Mar on Euphoria's deeper shades of Euphoria cd and loved it. Also liked Sasha's "Baja", the way it was mixed on Euphoria's Deep & Chilled cd. It preceeded Sister Bliss's ambient "Sister Sister" mix. Here's a bit of trivia - does anyone know who Sister Bliss really is? Still don't know? She was with the group Faithless (Remember the track "I can't get no sleep") - that cut was popular maybe in 1996-1997. Well, now she's more commonly known for that Eminem song... yeah, she's Dido.
The Comparison For the sake of comparison (and because I was an original NAF member)... Dido... So obviously, the Sister Bliss (Faithless) project was more "risque" I guess because of the whole genre. "Dido" just looks... chipper and Cute. "Sister Bliss" looks downright sexy!
Here are some other suggestions and bands/songs I've been listening too lately: Flunk -- nice band with a cool female vocalist. Yes, they did yet another "Blue Monday" cover, but it's a good one. Kelly Ali -- the former singer for Sneaker Pimps goes solo. "Sunlight in the Rain" is in heavy rotation these days. Mum -- with a little accent over the "u". Will remind some folks of Sigur Ros and/or Bjork. Mystical stuff... Archive -- difficult to describe. Very moody and dark. Intelligent stuff. Others of note include Puracane, Balligomingo, Do Make Say Think, Laika, Emiliana Torrini, Rose Smith, Soulstice...
You must have the Hedkandi Winter Chill vol 3. That comp is pretty good - only thing I don't like about it is that there's a bit too much female warbling on it. Do you like the Hedkandi series? (if that is where you heard it) Their last serve chilled was great IMO. but they haven't made one since 2001 (a Serve Chilled).
Re: The Comparison I don't who told you that but you're mistaken. I was very suspicious when I read it as I'm quite familiar with both artists but couldn't prove it so I've done a little research and it's actually quite easy to see why you might have believed it. Sister Bliss was a member of Faithless and had been a moderately successful Dj in London since the early 90's. I had actually seen her play at a few clubs like Bagleys and Turnmills in the mid 90's. She then met Rollo (other founding member of Faithless) and asked him to start up a commericial techno band as it was very difficult back then to make the cross over from DJ to performing artist. Dido is the sister of Rollo and did contribute to some of the songs on their first album. It explains it all here: http://www.tursa.franken.de/RolloBliss_about.html Also, Sabres of Paradise rock. Did you know that they were fronted by Andrew Weatherall? Very famous remixer and producer and the people he's worked with is like a "who's who" of British Indy/Dance music for the last 10 years. Check out the album Screamadelica by Primal Scream to hear his finest work.
