CLASSES As can be seen, there is quite a lot of data that is not too inconsistent as there are different opinions regarding some players. The most extreme case is that of Míchel, a player highly valued by the fans (of his team and others), but also by his own colleagues. Atlético de Madrid won the league and the King's Cup, clearly dominating Spanish soccer. Raúl and Kiko were the best Spanish players according to the Spanish press ratings, although the best in the whole league was Mijatovic. The Bosman Law and the stratospheric signings made it possible for many Spanish teams to rub shoulders with the best in Europe. However, we cannot fool ourselves, the power of money had a lot to do with this. Real Madrid's great success, brilliantly winning the most important tournament at club level. And the truth is that they did it brilliantly, but it is no less true that the role of Roberto Carlos, Redondo and Mijatovic, together with Suker's goals, was essential. Y lo cierto es que lo hizo de una manera brillante, pero no es menos cierto que el papel de Roberto Carlos, Redondo y Mijatovic, junto a los goles de Suker, fue imprescindible. No sería justo obviar que Fernando Hierro estuvo, de igual forma, extraordinario. Por otro lado, Raúl estuvo claramente por debajo de sus posibilidades, mientras que la agradable sorpresa corrió a cargo de otro joven delantero, Fernando Morientes. Al contrario que el Real Madrid, la andadura del Barcelona en Copa de Europa fue simplemente nefasta; tal vez por ello, pudo centrarse en las competiciones nacionales, en las que venció, aunque fueron muchos los partidos que perdió en su camino, a pesar de contar en sus filas con Rivaldo, Figo, Luis Enrique, Sergi... El veterano portero holandés Hesp, no solo le quitó el puesto de titular a Vitor Baía, sino que además, fue uno de los que mejor renidmiento demostró. El Atlético de Madrid bajó enteros en liga, aunque se mantuvo hasta las últimas rondas de la Copa de la UEFA, aunque sin demasiado brillo de sus rutilantes estrellas Kiko, Caminero o Pantic. Eso sí, explosión a nivel internacional de Vieri y agradable sorpresa del lateral Aguilera. A destacar también el buen papel de Alfonso en el Betis, de Iván Campo en el Mallorca y de Joseba Etxeberría en el Athletic (paralelo al descenso de Julen Guerrero). Poco más... Mi sensación es que, haciendo hincapié en los jugadores españoles, la temporada fue decepcionante, rematada, además, con la nefasta actuación en el Campeonato del Mundo, donde, solamente Hierro y, tal vez Aguilera, Morientes y Luis Enrique, fueron los que mantuvieron el tipo. Respecto a la rutilante estrella mundial Raúl, sin lugar a dudas, su nivel de juego estuvo muy por debajo de lo esperado, a pesar de que, por sus reconocidos méritos pasados, todavía fue un jugador bastante nombrado en los diferentes premios individuales, por lo que, no tengo más remedio que colocarle en lo que el mundo del fútbol decidió, a un nivel internacional, aunque desde mi punto de vista, otros futbolistas nacionales hicieran más méritos para lograr un lugar más honorable.

The average level of Spanish soccer continues to rise. Raúl is at a clear world top level, and there are a few others at an international level, at least Guardiola, Hierro, Míchel Salgado, Mendieta and Marcelino from Majorca.
