COPA DEL REY
The Spanish Cup was renamed Copa de Su Majestad el Rey (His Majesty the King's Cup) in February 1977. There was a restructuring in which the 1st division teams started from the first round, except for those playing in European Cups, which would start from the moment they were eliminated from the same with the top of the round of 16. What did not change was that all the playoffs would be two-legged, except for the final, which would be a single match.
Racing Santander fell in the first round and Burgos in the second. Continuing with its disastrous season, Real Madrid, recently eliminated from the European Cup, entered the draw for the third round of the Cup and was eliminated against Hercules; Malaga, which was on its way to the second division, was also eliminated, in this case, logically, against Valencia.
Thus, the round of 16 was reached with the absence of Real Madrid among the theoretical favorites. In that round, Español gave a good account of Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao against Elche. The rest of the knockout rounds were more evenly matched, with Barcelona surprisingly eliminated by Celta, Valencia, eliminated by Hercules, and Atlético de Madrid by Sevilla.
In the quarterfinals there were no second-tier teams left, but the championship was much more open because the big teams had already fallen. Español, still unbeatable at home (with the revival of Solsona and goals by Marañón and Caszely), eliminated Celta, Betis eliminated Hércules, Salamanca eliminated Zaragoza and Athletic, thanks to an overwhelming 5-0 win at San Mamés, put an end to Sevilla's hopes.
The semifinals were reached, where Athletic beat Salamanca mercilessly (with the stellar participation of Carlos) and Betis had to overcome an adverse result against Español, with two goals by Biosca, the first of them at the end of normal time.
The final was one of the most exciting in recent memory, with extra time and an endless number of penalty kicks in which the goalkeepers were the protagonists, with Esnaola saving Iríbar's kick and the Betis goalkeeper scoring his own. In this way, Betis won the Cup.
As for the individual players, Gallego was exceptional. Very good but far from the Andalusian, the Bilbao players Dani, Rojo I, Guisasola, and in a somewhat inferior section Churruca and Iríbar, the defenders Manolo, Juanjo, Rivas and Santomé. Among the champions, López, Cardeñosa and Sabaté were the most outstanding.
Anzarda, from Betis, was the top scorer of the event, with 11 goals (1 per game). He was followed by another secondary player, although two years earlier he had been top scorer in the first division; I am referring to Athletic striker Carlos, who scored 10 goals in just 6 games (1.67 per game). Another Bilbao player, Dani, accompanied his great competition with 7 goals in 6 games.

COPA DEL REY


La Copa de España pasó a llamarse desde febrero de 1977 Copa de Su Majestad el Rey. Hubo una reestructuración en la cual los equipos de 1ª división empezaban desde la primera ronda, salvo los que jugaban copas europeas que empezarían en el momento en que fueran eliminados de las mismas con el tope de los octavos de final. Lo que no cambiaba es que todas las eliminatorias serían a doble partido, excepto la final, a partido único.


En la primera ronda cayó el Racing de Santander, haciéndolo en la segunda el Burgos. Prosiguiendo son su nefasta temporada, el Real Madrid recién eliminado de la Copa de Europa, se integra en el sorteo de la tercera ronda de Copa y cae eliminado ante el Hércules; el Málaga, que llevaba camino a la segunda división también cayó, en este caso, de forma lógica, contra el Valencia.


Se llega así a los octavos de final con la ausencia del Real Madrid entre los teóricos favoritos. En dicha ronda, el Español dio buena cuenta de la Real Sociedad y el Athletic de Bilbao ante el Elche. Más igualadas estuvieron el resto de las eliminatorias, en la que se quedaron sorprendentemente fuera el Barcelona a manos del Celta, el Valencia, eliminado por el Hércules y el Atlético de Madrid por el Sevilla.


En cuartos de final ya no quedaban equipos de segunda, pero el campeonato estaba mucho más abierto pues los grandes equipos habían caído ya. El Español, que seguía intratable en su campo (con el renacer de Solsona y los goles de Marañón y Caszely), eliminó al Celta, el Betis al Hércules, el Salamanca al Zaragoza y el Athletic, gracias a un contundente 5 a 0 en San Mamés, terminó con las esperanzas del Sevilla.


Se llega a las semifinales, donde el Athletic golea (con participación estelar de Carlos) sin misericordia al Salamanca y el Betis tiene que remontar un adverso resultado ante el Español, con dos goles de Biosca, el primero de ellos a punto de finalizar el tiempo reglamentario.


La final fue una de las más emocionantes que se recuerdan, con prórroga y un sinfín de lanzamientos de penaltis en que son protagonistas los porteros, parando Esnaola el lanzamiento de Iríbar y marcando el guardamente del Betis el suyo. De esta forma, el Betis se hizo con la Copa.


En cuanto a las individualidades, excepcional Gallego. Muy bien pero lejos del andaluz, los bilbaínos Dani, Rojo I, Guisasola, y en un tramo algo inferior Churruca e Iríbar, los defensas Manolo, Juanjo, Rivas y Santomé. Entre los campeones, López, Cardeñosa y Sabaté fueron los más destacados.


Anzarda, del Betis, fue el máximo goleador del evento, con 11 goles (1 por partido). Le siguió otro actor secundario, aunque hacía dos años había sido pichichi de la primera división; me refiero al ariete del Athletic Carlos, que hizo 10 goles en tan solo 6 partidos (1,67 por partido). Otro bilbaíno, Dani, acompañó su gran competición con 7 goles en también 6 partidos.

CLASSES
In this course I do not see any player with possibilities of being qualified with an international class, much less world class. The average level of the Spanish footballer was mediocre. Although Pirri got some votes in the Golden Ball ranking and others like Camacho, Pirri, Guisasola or Iríbar were part of some rankings of famous international magazines, the reality is that, perhaps, those mentions come more from their previous fame or specific matches than from a regularity in performance throughout the whole season. For example, Miguel Ángel was the best in the Spanish and Real Madrid matches in the European Cup, but his league campaign was mediocre and in the Cup he was eliminated in the first round. Pirri would be Real Madrid's most regular player, but, while retaining his caste and excellent attitude, he did not reach outstanding heights in any of the competitions played. Other candidates such as Churruca and Rojo I had a great league, a great UEFA Cup and even a good Copa del Rey, but their poor performance with the national team prevented them from earning merit beyond the national class. Migueli came very close, but failed to go further in the Copa.

En este curso no veo a ningún jugador con posibilidades de ser calificados con una clase internacional, ni mucho menos mundial. El nivel medio del futbolista español era mediocre. Aunque Santillana consiguió algún voto en la clasificación del Balón de Oro y otros como Camacho, Pirri, Guisasola o Iríbar formaron parte de algunos rankings de famosas revistas internacionales, la realidad es que, tal vez, esas menciones proceden más de su fama anterior o de partidos concretos que de una regularidad en el rendimiento a lo largo de toda la temporada. Así por ejemplo, Miguel Ángel fue el mejor en los partidos de España y del Real Madrid en Copa de Europa, pero su campaña de liga fue mediocre y en Copa es eliminado a las primeras de cambio. Pirri sería el jugador más regular del Real Madrid, pero, conservando su casta y excelente actitud, no llega a cotas sobresalientes en ninguna de las competiciones disputadas. Otros candidatos como Churruca y Rojo I hacen una gran liga, una gran Copa de la UEFA e incluso una buena Copa del Rey, pero su flojo rendimiento con la selección, les impide ganarse el mérito más allá de la clase nacional. Migueli se acercó mucho, pero le falló llegar más lejos en Copa.

IDEAL XI
This season I have a somewhat strange selection. Starting with the goalkeeper, Arconada will not be in goal despite his excellent season in the league, as Miguel Ángel shines both in the European Cup and with the Spanish national team. As for the fullbacks, I have no doubts about the left one: although Camacho and Capón did not have their best season, they are by far the best fullbacks in Spain. This time, Sol has not had the slightest chance and Celtic Suso Santomé has played his national season very well, although he does not count for Kubala and, unfortunately, his team is relegated. With the center of the defense I have no doubts: Gallego (totally forgotten by the coach) and Migueli; both had more merits than Olmo, Cortabarría and Guisasola, recognizing the great work done by all of them. In midfield, Villar does not shine enough, Claramunt, less, Del Bosque nothing at all... I have three candidates left and the problem is that all three were left midfielders or left midfielders. Asensi was perhaps the one who would best adapt to the position of midfielder as he did in Europe with Barcelona; Churruca always shone on the left, both as a winger and as an inside midfielder. And Cardeñosa, who was one of the architects of Betis' success in the Copa del Rey, did not reach the heights of the two mentioned above, nor do I see him playing on the right; however, I have a wild card left, which is none other than the courageous Pirri, who played as a sweeper for Real Madrid, with a much better job than most of his teammates despite his age. It is not easy to do without Dani or López Ufarte in this XI, with Marañón not too far away, but Juanito and Rojo I were the best. And as for the center forward, once again, there was no problem. Goals were not lacking, but what was good play... Santillana practically disappeared, Clares very irregular, Satrústegui still in a learning phase, which is why I have to use Quini, who although he played in the second division, was top scorer and his ratings indicate that he had a really good season. A pity about his continuous failures with the Spanish national team.
So, with a 4-3-3 system (with Pirri inserting himself between Migueli and Gallego in case of need), my ideal selection would be: Miguel Ángel; Capón, Migueli, Gallego, Camacho; Pirri, Asensi, Churruca; Juanito, Quini and Rojo I.

XI IDEAL


Esta temporada me sale una selección un tanto extraña. Empezando por la portería, Arconada no ocupará la portería a pesar de su excelente temporada liguera, pues Miguel Ángel se luce tanto en Copa de Europa como con la selección española. En los laterales, no tengo ninguna duda en el izquierdo: aunque Camacho y Capón no hicieron su mejor temporada, son, de largo, los mejores lateralesde España. Esta vez, Sol carece de la más mínima ocasión y el céltico Suso Santomé juega muy bien su temporada nacional aunque no cuenta para Kubala y, desgraciadamente, su equipo desciende de categoría. Con el centro de la defensa no tengo duda alguna: Gallego (totalmente olvidado por el seleccionador) y Migueli; ambos contrajeron más méritos que Olmo, Cortabarría y Guisasola, reconociendo la gran labor que hicieron todos ellos. En el centro del campo, Villar no brilla lo suficiente, Claramunt, menos, Del Bosque nada de nada… Me quedan tres candidatos y el problema es que los tres eran volantes o interiores izquierdos. Asensi, tal vez fuera el que mejor se adaptaría al puesto de mediocentro como lo hizo en Europa con el Barcelona; Churruca brilló siempre por la izquierda, cuando como extremo, cuando como interior. Y Cardeñosa, fue uno de los artífices del éxito del Betis en la Copa del Rey, no llegó a la altura de los dos anteriormente mencionados, ni tampoco le veo jugando por la derecha; sin embargo, me queda un comodín, que no es otro que el corajudo Pirri, que se desempeñó como líbero en el Real Madrid, con un trabajo mucho mejor que el de la mayoría de sus compañeros a pesar de su edad. No obstante, la polivalencia del jugador ceutí, hace que se adapte a cualquier puesto del centro del campo y por eso le voy a colocar como volante derecho. Los extremos brillaron esta temporada. No es fácil prescindir en este XI ni de Dani, ni de López Ufarte, con Marañón no demasiado lejos, pero Juanito y Rojo I fueron los mejores. Y de delantero centro, una vez más, problema al canto. Goles no faltaban, pero lo que era buen juego… Santillana prácticamente desaparecido, Clares muy irregular, Satrústegui todavía en fase de aprendizaje, razón por la cual tengo que tirar de Quini, que aunque jugó en segunda división, fue máximo goleador y sus ratings indican que hizo una temporada realmente buena. Lástima sus continuos fracasos con la selección española.


Así pues, con un sistema 4-3-3 (con Pirri incrustándose entre Migueli y Gallego en caso de necesidad), mi selección ideal sería: Miguel Ángel; Capón, Migueli, Gallego, Camacho; Pirri, Asensi, Churruca; Juanito, Quini y Rojo I.

LEAGUE

Real Madrid wins the league quite comfortably, as they are 6 points ahead of the 2nd placed team. Santillana, although he does not have a brilliant average ranking, scores an impressive number of goals: 24; German Stielike has a great performance both in play and in number of goals (13). Pirri, despite his age, is still in form and is another of the league's top performers, scoring 7 goals to go with his performances. Camacho was fantastic in the little he played before his injury and goalkeeper Miguel Angel also had a remarkable season. San José had a good breakthrough (also in the national team) and Juanito's performance dropped significantly, even though he scored 10 goals.
Barcelona was not bad, although far from their eternal rival. Migueli was the best and also the one with the best average in the championship. The Dutchman Neeskens clearly won out over his compatriot Cruyff, who was rather irregular in his performances, although his season could not be described as bad. Olmo, Asensi and Artola were other top players. Asensi and Rexach were the team's best scorers, both with 9 goals, leaving Cruyff with 5.
One point behind finished a good Athletic de Bilbao. The small and skilful Dani was undoubtedly their best man, besides scoring 20 goals. Argote and Carlos were his usual partners in attack, with good figures as well: 11 and 16 goals respectively.
Valencia finished 4th despite having one of the most fashionable players in the world, Kempes, who did not give all he had, but scored 28 goals, enough to be the best scorer of the championship. Carrete and Manzanedo also excelled.
Next, it is worth mentioning the good classification of Sporting de Gijón, with Ferrero, Uría and Maceda as stars and, of course, the goals of Quini (15).
Atlético de Madrid's performance dropped considerably compared to the previous season. Defenders Pereira, although much lower than the previous season, and Marcelino were the best, while, despite being far from having a fine and technical game, Rubén Cano scored 21 goals.
Then, in this order, Las Palmas, Sevilla, Salamanca, Rayo and Real Sociedad, separated by a few points. The Canaries continued to count on a group of Argentine players of great quality, such as goalkeeper Carnevalli, coach Brinsidi and the great scorer Morete (18 goals). In Sevilla, the goal scorer was another Argentinian, Scotta (16), although their best performer was still the great veteran Paco Gallego, 7th best average of the championship; goalkeeper Gustavo Fernandez was also splendid. Salamanca's star player was the Portuguese Alves, a magnificent player of international stature. The central defender Rezza also performed very well and, despite his very serious injury in one of his kidneys, the goalkeeper D'Alessandro also had a proven category. Rayo was one of the surprises of the league, although they gradually lost steam. Their top scorers were Gonzalez and Alvarito, with 13 and 12 goals respectively. Real Sociedad, despite their mediocre ranking, was starting to build a historic team, led by the extraordinary Arconada; their center forward had the ability to score 18 goals and the young left winger had an exquisite game as well as scoring with ease (11 goals).
There followed a merciless fight to avoid relegation that included Burgos, Racing Santander, Español, Hércules and Betis. In goal was often the best of each team, with Portuguese Damas of Racing having a fabulous season, and Urruticoechea of Español and Navarro II of Burgos not to be outdone. Along with Urruti, Marañón (18 goals) was key in the salvation of an illustrious team like Español. And it was precisely another illustrious club, Betis, which despite its good individuals, some of them internationals and among the best players in Spain, fell into the pit of the 2nd division. Gordillo emerged as an excellent wide player, versatile enough to play as a winger, midfielder or left winger. Sabaté had an enviable regularity from the center of the defense, with the help of Biosca. Cardeñosa was their star player, with an enviable technique and unjustly catalogued for a mistake that was an indelible stain on his remarkable record (that non-goal in this year's World Cup against Brazil...). Lopez and Esnaola also deserve to be mentioned. One thinks that the few rotations that were given at that time, together with losing in advanced rounds in Cup Winners' Cup and Copa del Rey, could have meant an extra effort that meant a lack of energy in the last league matches.

Elche and Cadiz accompanied Betis on their way to 2nd division. Elche had a large roster of foreigners, of which only the Honduran Gilberto gave a regular and adequate performance. By the way, you can see Gilberto in 2nd position among the best league averages, something only possible with the impressive rating on the DBSCalcio website; I sincerely think that this is some kind of mistake, as it is way out of the ratings of the rest of the sources.

LIGA


El Real Madrid gana la liga con bastante comodidad, pues obtiene 6 puntos de diferencia con el 2º clasificado. Santillana, aunque no saca un promedio de clasificaciones brillante hace una cifra impresionante de goles: 24; el alemás Stielike tiene una gran rendimiento tanto en juego como en número de goles (13). Pirri, a pesar de su edad, sigue estando en forma y es otro de los mejores de la liga, acompañando sus actuaciones de 7 goles. Camacho estuvo fantástico en lo poco que jugó antes de su lesión y el portero Miguel Ángel tuvo también una temporada notable. Buena irrupción de San José (también en el equipo nacional) y bajón importante de rendimiento de Juanito, aunque hiciera 10 goles.


No estuvo mal el Barcelona, aunque lejos de su eterno rival. Migueli fue el mejor y también el que mejor promedio obtuvo en el campeonato. El holandés Neeskens se impuso claramente a su compatriota Cruyff, bastante irregular en sus actuaciones aunque seu temporada no se pueda calificar de mala. Olmo, Asensi y Artola fueron otros de sus mejores elementos. Asensi y Rexach fueron los mejores realizadores del equipo, ambos con 9 goles, quedándose Cruyff en 5.


Un punto por detrás finalizó un buen Athletic de Bilbao. El pequeño y hábil Dani fue indudablemente su mejor hombre, además de marcar 20 goles. Argote y Carlos fueron sus habituales compañeros en el ataque, con buenas cifras también: 11 y 16 tantos respectivamente.


El Valencia terminó 4º a pesar de tener a uno de los jugadores de moda en el panorama mundial, Kempes, quien no dio de sí todo lo que tenía, pero marcó 28 goles, bastándole para ser el mejor goleador del campeonato. Carrete y Manzanedo también se lucieron.


A continuación, resaltar la buena clasificación del Sporting de Gijón, con Ferrero, Uría y Maceda como estrellas y, como no, los goles de Quini (15).


El Atlético de Madrid descendió bastante su rendimiento en relación a la temporada anterior. Los defensas Pereira, aunque bastante más bajo que la temporada anterior, y Marcelino fueron los mejores, mientras que, a pesar de distar mucho de tenr un juego fino y técnico, Rubén Cano marcó 21 goles.


Después, en este orden, Las Palmas, Sevilla, Salamanca, Rayo y Real Sociedad, separados de pocos puntos. Los canarios seguían contando con un grupo de jugadores argentinos de mucha calidad, como se guardameta Carnevalli, el técnico Brinsidi y el gran goleador Morete (18 goles). En el Sevilla, el encargado de hacer los goles era otro argentino, Scotta (16), aunque su hombre de mejor rendimiento seguía siendo el gran veterano Paco Gallego, 7º mejor promedio del campeonato; el portero Gustavo Fernández también estuvo espléndido. El Salamanca tenía como figura al portugués Alves, magnífico jugador de talla internacional. Muy buen rendimiento tuvo también el central Rezza y, a pesar de su gravísima lesión en uno de sus riñones, el portero D’Alessandro tenía también una categoría contrastada. El Rayo fue una de las sorpresas de la liga, aunque poco a poco fue perdiendo fuelle. Sus máximos goleadores fueron González y Alvarito, con 13 y 12 goles respectivamente. La Real Sociedad, a pesar de su mediocre clasificación empezaba a gestar un equipo histórico, comandado por el extraordinario Arconada; su delantero centro tenía habilidad para ver puerta, pues hizo 18 goles y el joven extremo izquierdo tenía un juego exquisito además de ver puerta con facilidad (11 goles).


A continuación hubo una lucha despiadad por evitar el descenso que incluyó al Burgos, Racing de Santander, Español, Hércules y Betis. En la portería estuvo, muchas veces lo mejor de cada equipo, con el portugués Damas, del Racing haciendo una fabulosa temporada, y Urruticoechea del Español y Navarro II del Burgos sin desmerecerle. Junto a Urruti, Marañón (18 goles) fue clave en la salvación de un ilustre como el Español. Y fue precisamente otro ilustre, el Betis, el que a pesar de sus buenas individualidades, algunas de ellas internacionales y entre los mejores futbolistas de España, cayó en el pozo de la 2ª división. Gordillo surgió como un excelente jugador de banda, polivalente para poder jugar tanto de lateral, volante o extremo izquierdo. Sabaté tuvo una regularidad envidiable desde el centro de la defensa, con la ayuda de Biosca. Cardeñosa era su jugador estrella, con una técnica envidiable e injustamente catalogado por un error que supuso una mancha imborrable en su notable expediente (aquel no gol en el Mundial de este año ante Brasil…). López y Esnaola también merecen ser nombrados. Uno piensa que las pocas rotaciones que se daban en esa época, junto a caer en rondas avanzadas en Recopa y Copa del Rey, pudo suponer un esfuerzo extra que supusiera una falta de energía en los últimos partidos de liga.


Elche y Cádiz acompañaron al Betis en su camino a 2ª. El Elche tenía una amplia nómina de extranjeros, de los cuales solo el hondureño Gilberto dio un rendimiento regular y adecuado. Por cierto, se puede ver a Gilberto en 2ª posición entre los mejores promedio de la liga, algo solo posible con la impresionante calificación en la web DBSCalcio; sinceramente pienso que se trata de algún tipo de error, pues se sale mucho de los ratings del resto de las fuentes.

Migueli's performances were memorable, although unfairly, the international press did not take notice when it came to awarding mentions and accolades. Cruyff, with his characteristic irregularity, also had some great games, which is why he has to be mentioned as the best azulgrana player after Migueli. Asensi, Neeskens, Artola and Olmo also had outstanding performances. Cruyff was Barça's top scorer with 5 goals, followed by Rexach with one less.

El Barcelona llegó bastante lejos en la UEFA, y estuvo a punto de remontar en las semifinales ante el PSV, lo mismo que lo hizo ante el Ipswich Town.


Las actuaciones de Migueli fueron memorables, aunque injustamente, la prensa internacional no se hizo eco a la hora de conceder menciones y galardones. Cruyff, con su característica irregularidad también tuvo partidos enormes, por lo cual hay que mencionarle como el mejor jugador azulgrana tras Migueli. A destacar también el torneo de Asensi, Neeskens, Artola y Olmo. Cruyff fue el máximo goleador del Barça, con 5 tantos, seguido de Rexach con uno menos.

Los canarios tuvieron la desgracia de encontrarse en la segunda ronda contra uno de los mejores equipos ingleses del momento y de ahí su eliminación. Spain's goals and assists this season were very evenly spread. Rubén Cano and Dani scored three, Quini two and López Ufarte, Leal, Pirri, Villar and Asensi one each. The best passer was Marañón with 3 assists, Pirri and Juanito gave 2 and Dani, Churruca, Cardeñosa and Leal one each.

The statistics tell us that of the 10 matches the national team played, they won 70% and drew 20%, which is also commendable as they were in Uruguay and against Brazil. However, they lost a key match against Austria, who were not as weak as some said, but were not a world power either. They did have players of the calibre of Krankl, Koncilia, Prohaska, Pezzey and Sara.

In terms of available qualifications, Pirri and Migueli were the mainstays of the team. Olmo, Marcelino, Cardeñosa and Miguel Angel were really good. Camacho and Asensi did not do badly either. Los goles y asistencias de España en esta temporada estuvieron muy repartidos. Rubén Cano y Dani metieron tres, Quini, dos y López Ufarte, Leal, Pirri, Villar y Asensi uno cada uno. El mejor pasador fue Marañón con 3 asistencias, Pirri y Juanito dieron 2 y Dani, Churruca, Cardeñosa y Leal una cada uno.


La estadística nos dice que de los 10 partidos que disputó el equipo nacional, venció en un 70 % y empató en el 20%, meritorio también pues fueron en Uruguay y ante Brasil. Sin embargo se perdió en uno clave ante la selección de Austria, que no era tan débil como algunos decían, pero que tampoco era una potencia mundial. Eso sí, tenía jugadores de la talla de Krankl, Koncilia, Prohaska, Pezzey o Sara.


Atendiendo a las calificaciones disponibles, Pirri y Migueli fueron los puntales del equipo. Olmo, Marcelino, Cardeñosa y Miguel Ángel estuvieron realmente bien. Camacho y Asensi tampoco lo hicieron mal. Sin embargo dejó mucho que desear las actuaciones de nuestros delanteros, en particular de Juanito y Quini. Dani fue el mejor del ataque aunque sin grandes actuaciones a excepción del partido contra Italia.

COPA DEL REY

Before the round of 16, 6 1st division teams had already fallen: Salamanca in the first round, Santander, Rayo Vallecano and Elche in the 3rd division and Español and Hércules in the 3rd division.

In the semi-finals, Barcelona held off Real. Another of the season's protagonists, Sporting Gijón, also lost, and with clarity, against Las Palmas.
The final had little history, as Barcelona defeated the Canaries without too much difficulty (3-1).
As in the league, the tournament's top scorer was Kempes with 11 goals; other top scorers were Quini (8), Asensi, López Ufarte, Morete and Brindisi (6), Satrústegui and Rexach (5).
Arconada was superb in the Cup. His team-mate López Ufarte also shone at a high level. Among the group of players with outstanding performances were Gordillo, Cruyff, Wolff, Migueli, Carnevali, Maceda, Asensi, Cortabarría, Stielike, Del Bosque and Cardeñosa.

COPA DEL REY


Antes de los octavos de final ya habían caído 6 equipos de 1ª división: el Salamanca en primera ronda, Santander, Rayo Vallecano y Elche en 3ª y Español y Hércules en 3ª.


Ya en octavos de final, el Real Madrid cayó a manos de la Real Sociedad. La eliminatoria entre el Atlético de Madrid y el Athletic de Bilbao fue emocionantísima, con goles y buen juego, pero la igualdad fue tanta que se llegó a los lazamientos de penaltis, pasando finalmente de ronda los madrileños. El Sporting de Gijón seguía adelante al eliminar con facilidad al Sevilla.


En cuartos de final, la Real Sociedad seguía se excelente racha y dejó en la cuneta al Valencia, goleada incluida. Sin embargo el Barcelona tuvo dificultades ante un buen Alavés. Las Palmas da una relativa sorpresa venciendo al Atlético de Madrid, mientras que el Sporting dejaba en la cuneta al vigente campeón, el Betis.


En las semifinales, el Barcelona frena a la Real. Otro de los protagonistas de la temporada, el Sporting de Gijón también cae, y además con claridad, contra Las Palmas.


La final tiene poca historia, ya que el Barcelona derrotó sin demasiadas dificultades a los canarios (3-1).


Al igual que en la liga, el máximo anotador del torneo fue Kempes con 11 goles; otros jugadores que estuvieron acertados cara a puerta fueron Quini (8), Asensi, López Ufarte, Morete y Brindisi (6), Satrústegui y Rexach (5).


Arconada estuvo soberbio en la Copa. Su compañero López Ufarte brilló también a gran altura. En el ramillete de jugadores con un notable rendimiento estuvieron Gordillo, Cruyff, Wolff, Migueli, Carnevali, Maceda, Asensi, Cortabarría, Stielike, Del Bosque y Cardeñosa.

LIGA

Real Madrid won the league with a relatively large lead over the second-placed team. German Stielike was their most regular player. With a lower but not bad average, Pirri and García Remón were next. The rest did not have a significant average. Santillana was their top scorer with 18 goals. Camacho was still injured.
The surprise of the championship was Sporting Gijón, who finished 2nd, 4 points behind Madrid. Quini scored 23 goals, with a fairly acceptable scoring average. Mesa, Cundi and Rezza were the most regular players of the team.
Atletico Madrid finished with 41 goals. Their best man was surprisingly their new goalkeeper Navarro II, with a remarkable average. Luiz Pereira and Marcelino followed with acceptable ratings. Spanish-Argentine Rubén Cano was their best scorer with 19 goals.
With the same points, 4th was Real Sociedad, full of great players, such as Alonso, Arconada, Zamora, Gajate, Satrústegui, Cortabarría and López Ufarte, all of them protagonists of a good season. Satrústegui scored 20 goals; left midfielder Zamora scored 12.
9 points behind the champion team, a disappointing Barcelona, although their center-forward Krankl won the "Pichichi" for the top scorer of the league, with 29 goals; however, his ratings were very mediocre. As usual, Neeskens had a remarkable season. Well below his usual league level was his central defender Migueli.
Las Palmas, whose backbone was still Argentinian, did well. Not in vain, Morete scored 16 goals and Brindisi 14, the latter being one of the best players of the competition. Felipe and Carnevalli did quite well.
Valencia, which had some great players, did not finish higher than 7th place. Kempes dropped a lot compared to the previous year, scoring only 12 goals and with really poor ratings. Their best man, at least statistically, was their right back Carrete. Solsona with 8 goals and Bonhof had a very average league.
Like Valencia, Espanyol got 35 points. Great season by Fernández Amado and Urruticoechea. Canito also did well. Athletic did poorly, right in the middle of the table. Very average ratings for Iríbar, Alesanco and Dani (13 goals), who, however, were the best of the team.
Next came Salamanca, where Amarillo stood out above all others, followed by D'Alessandro.
Sevilla finished one point behind. The veteran Gallego, undoubtedly the team's best performer, shone once again this year. Although Bertoni and Scotta scored 9 goals each, they had a dismal season. 9 goals were also scored by the promising Montero.
Interestingly, the two players with the best averages in their ratings were Amador and Giuliano, both from Hercules, who nevertheless struggled not to be relegated, something they achieved by finishing 12th. Also noteworthy was Baena's season.
With the same points, Burgos, with very discreet individual performances. However, in Zaragoza, the goals of Pichi Alonso (19) and the Yugoslavian Antic, a player of great regularity in his performance, stood out.
Rayo Vallecano escaped relegation, something that Celta, Racing Santander and Recreativo Huelva failed to achieve.

1978-79


LIGA


El Real Madrid gana la liga con una ventaja relativamente importante sobre el segundo clasificado. El alemán Stielike fue su jugador más regular. Con un promedio menor pero nada malo, Pirri y García Remón fueron los siguientes. El resto no tuvo un promedio importante. Santillana fue su máximo realizador con 18 goles. Camacho seguía lesionado.


La sorpresa del campeonato fue el Sporting de Gijón, que acabó 2º a 4 puntos del Madrid. Quini marcó 23 goles, con un promedio de notas bastanete aceptable. Mesa, Cundi y Rezza fueron los más regulares del equipo.


El Atlético de Madrid terminó con 41 goles. Su mejor hombre fue sorprendentemente su nuevo portero Navarro II, con un notable promedio. Luiz Pereira y Marcelino le siguieron con ratings aceptables. El hispanoargentino Rubén Cano fue su mejor goleador con 19 tantos.


Con los mismos puntos, el 4º fue la Real Sociedad, repleto de grandes jugadores, como Alonso, Arconada, Zamora, Gajate, Satrústegui , Cortabarría y López Ufarte, protagonistas todos de una buena temporada. Satrústegui fue el autor de 20 goles; el medio izquierdo Zamora hizo 12.


A 9 puntos del equipo campeón, un decepcionante Barcelona, aunque su centrodelantero Krankl ganó el “Pichichi” al máximo goleador de la liga, con 29 goles; sin embargo, sus ratings fueron muy mediocres. Como era habitual, Neeskens hizo una notable temporada. Bastante por debajo de su nivel habitual en liga su defensa central Migueli.


Bien Las Palmas, cuya columna vertebral seguía siendo argentina. No en vano, Morete hizo 16 goles y Brindisi 14, siendo este último uno de los mejores jugadores de la competición. Bastante bien Felipe y Carnevalli.


El Valencia que contaba con grandes jugadores no pasó de la 7ª posición. Kempes bajó mucho respecto al año anterior, consiguiendo tan solo 12 goles y con unos ratings realmente flojos. Su mejor hombre, al menos estadísticamente, fue su lateral derecho Carrete. Solsona con 8 goles y Bonhof hicieron una liga muy mediana.


Al igual que el Valencia, el Español consiguió 35 puntos. Gran temporada de Fernández Amado y Urruticoechea. Canito también lo hizo bien. Mal el Athletic, justo a mitad de tabla. Muy normales los ratings de Iríbar, Alesanco y Dani (13 goles), quienes, sin embargo, fueron mejores del equipo.


A continuación el Salamanca, en el que destacó por encima de todos Amarillo, seguido de D’Alessandro.


Un punto por detrás finalizó el Sevilla. Brillante un año más el veterano Gallego, sin duda, el jugador con mayor rendimiento del equipo. Aunque Bertoni y Scotta marcaron 9 goles cada uno, tuvieron una temporada nefasta. 9 goles consiguió también el prometedor Montero.


Curiosamente, los dos jugadores con mejores promedios en sus calificaciones fueron Amador y Giuliano, ambos del Hércules, quien sin embargo luchó por no descender, algo que consiguió al finalizar 12º. A destacar también la temporada de Baena.


Con los mismos puntos, el Burgos, con actuaciones individuales muy discretas. Sien embargo, en el Zaragoza destacaron los goles de Pichi Alonso (19) y el yugoslavo Antic, jugador de gran regularidad en su rendimiento.


El Rayo Vallecano se libró del descenso, algo que no consiguieron Celta, Racing de Santander y Recreativo de Huelva.
