With the exception of Gorter (who they moved to sweeper!), the Revs can never seem to find a number 10. Maybe we should submit some realistic suggestions for the supplemental draft that I think is coming up.

    My suggestion:
Leighton O'Brien - Former Revs draft pick. Probably would still be a Rev if we had a Reserve system. 2002 Seattle Sounders MVP with 13 goals/11 assists.

Not sure about the supplemental draft, but what about Argentine central midfielder Daniel Garnero who's currently on trial with Metro?

If for some reason he doesn't work out with our rivals to the south, do you think the Revs would be willing to extended a similar trial to the player, provided they think they can afford him?

The guy's in his early 30's and was apparently a solid #10 for Independiente.

    Hey, it's one name.

Wow, that even trumps Freddy Aku for obscurity ponts ;-)

So what's the scoop on this player, what's his rep.?

May I be the first to make the requisite post that you don't need a traditional #10 to be a successful soccer team?

We definitely could use an attacking central midfielder who can challenge people off the dribble, control the ball for more than a few touches if necessary, and distribute the ball to the forwards. Do we really need a historical lecture on what a "traditional #10" is every time someone uses that phrase?

And yes, I know we can be successful without one, but we need to either upgrade at that spot or at left wing or central mid then we're going to have problems on the offensive end.

I think if we build up the left to go along with our strong right side, I think the middle will do just fine

Esp if Hernandez plays like last year and JMM floats around

You're probably right, but the only trialist I've heard about as a left winger was Buhlmann, who didn't seem to stick out like he did last year. They've tried out 2 central mids so far, and I don't think that we're done. Even if we get a great left mid, we still need a new central mid. On the left we have Kamler and Griffiths and whoever we got would probably replace one of them. In the central midfield we've dumped APC, Rooney, and Cloutier without replacing them, and I don't feel comfortable with Leo and Danny as the only center mids on the team.

I think he was being ironic.

And that irony would have been directed somewhere in my direction...

o'brien unavailable - probably not worth it anyway imho

I live in Seattle and happened to read in the local papers that Leighton O'Brien signed a 3 year deal with the Sounders just last fall. (3 year deals in A-League supposedly are pretty rare acc. to the same article IIRC)

I saw the Sounders twice last year - they absolutely dominated the A-League regular season but tanked in the playoffs - and while O'Brien does ok on the distribution, touch and shot, he's not fast and looks like he'd blow away in a stiff breeze. When was he with the Revs? Was his leaving a matter of him not having enough experience? Talent? Both?

While he'd be worth a shot if he weren't sewed up and strongly think that it's gonna be tough without a #10, I'd like to think we could do better than O'Brien...

    Andy Williams again......

It's sort of like an old girlfriend with him. You get drunk one night and wonder why you let her go cause she was so great

Then you sober up and realize ' what the hell was i thinking getting rid of her was the best thing i ever did ! '

    Andy should stay an ex

    AW

I had the good fortune to speak to a member of the media, and asked the same question; why not AW? I have always liked AW's play and have defended him on these boards. What I was told was that he was not well regarded by either the coaching staff or by some of the players. One of the starting Rev players even regarded him as a cancer. That said, he seems to have burned his bridges with the Revs if not with MLS altogether.

I think there'd be that much more competition between JMM and Andy. I really don't think that kind of position competition is good. Fighting in-team is bad. Very bad.

Nicol doesn't seem to agree. He's said on numerous occasions that he likes to see intense competition at every position!

Fighting for position isn't bad; what's bad is when either party lacks the professionalism to deal with the results of the competition.

Perhaps. I don't know why, but I don't think Andy Williams would be very professional about competing for that spot. JMM is just happy to be here. Just a gut feeling about AW. Am I wrong?

Looks like he's in Chicago, so the debate may be even more irrelevant than usual.

I've been an AW fan for a very, very long time. I was happy when the Revs signed him and I thought he (mostly) played well for us. I was disappointed when he was traded, but I don't think he should come back.

The Revs need to move forward. AW was good but we need someone who is either much better right now or someone who has the potential to be much better down the line. Unfortunatelly, AW seems to have peaked in 1995, so unless he comes as a temporary patch I'd rather not see him in a Revs kit again.

I dont believe AW has the work rate suitable enough to please Stevie Nicks and his british game and style.

That and Andy Williams has been a dissapointment for every team he has played for. Except for Jamaica, and even that would be up for debate.

IF none of the trialists impress, how about ...

    From socceruk:

Valderrama still thinking about MLS return.
    By Patricio Figueroa (Sky Sports/PF)

Colombian midfielder Carlos Valderrama is still unsure whether he will continue his distinguished career by playing another year in the MLS.

Rumours were rife that the 40-year-old was unhappy about being offered a new deal on reduced terms but says he is still hopeful of reaching an agreement.

"I can't accept things like that," Valderrama said in Barranquilla where he was presented with the keys to the city by governor Humberto Caiaffa.

"I still have a little bit of hope of playing in any city of the USA."

IF none of the trialists worked out, and IF he could be hired for a reasonable contract (maybe as a player/assistant ala Stoichkov), he could be an interesting player to have coming off the bench, and to work with the younger Revs ins practice.

Doubt Nicol would go for it though ...
