I think reposting entire stories is a no-no. Try this one: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3875297.stm In the meantime, a blast from the Enron Tapes: MATT: Tell you what -- you heard this here first: When Bush wins -- TOM: Caps are gone. MATT: That [expletive] Bill Richardson, he's [expletive] gone. ... TOM: Yeah. MATT: And who's the biggest, ah, single contributor to the Bush campaigners? TOM: You. MATT: Enron. TOM: Enron. What? (AP w/o registration, if anyone still needs it) http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5387858?GT1=4244 ..... "Prosecutors from the Justice Department’s Enron Task Force presented an indictment to U.S. Magistrate Judge Mary Milloy in Houston on Wednesday. At their request, the judge sealed both the indictment and an arrest warrant....." ...... I must say this piece of news has "great timing" (for the Republicans) written all over it....... I mean, just days after the Supreme Court decides NOT to force Cheney to release the info from the Enegy Task Force meetings, now we have the very "conscientious and dedicated" govt arm of ours (Justice Dept) indict Kenny Boy, whom we know Bush never got to know well, based on his lies.... i mean, denials This way this administration can look both tough on crime (yes, 3 years late, but certainly on time for campaign season!) and do not have to reveal how much mud Kenny Boy and the administration actually shared from the whole Energy Task force stuff.... I might be labeled as too cynical, but that's the way i see it....
That's impressively devious thinking. But I still think it's bad/bad for BushCo. Especially now -- They are already teeing up John Edwards as the frivolous lawsuit poster boy. But all he has to do is point and say "Hey, remember these guys: Enron, Halliburton ... they're the bad guys. That's who I was suing."
The title of this should be "Dubya's Good Friend Kenny Boy (as Shrub likes to call him) Indicted". I love how when asked about it Dubya just walked away from reporters without saying a single word or goodbye. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...=564&e=1&u=/nm/20040707/ts_nm/enron_lay_dc_11 He must have just realized what Lay being on Dick's top-secret energy team could mean for Bushco.
What happened to the howlings that the reason why Lay wasn't indicted sooner was because he was a friend of the White House? Paul
US President George W. Bush walks away from a briefing with the media, refusing to answer questions after he was asked about Enron and the reported indictment of former CEO Kenneth Lay, who was a close adviser and fund-raiser for Bush and his father, earning him the presidential nickname of 'Kenny Boy.' http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/040708/photos_ts_afp/040708125254_jg418y7h_photo1
You folks have your imagination set on "high" again; dial it back or reign it in! The Press Conference was done and he was walking away as normal... the vultures always ask such questions to provoke a response! The reason this indictment took so long is the sheer volume of material at Enron that needed to be reviewed, according to the Justice Department. IntheNet
Right, that's it!! Those other companies like Adelphia and Worldcom were simple, but Enron was complicated!! Even Andrew Fastow of Enron who was indicted 2 years ago was very simple, but Lay was complicated. It didn't have anything to do with "Kenny Boy" and his fundraising!! Who would suggest such a thing? The timing isn't suspect either. No political motivation here...no sir.
"Along the way, Mr. Lay secured enormous political influence in Washington, forging strong links with the administration of President Bush, including ties to the president personally." -- NY Times, today "I've been a strong financial and political supporter of, first, President Bush, Sr., when he was running for president in 1980. . . I'm very close to the family. . . I was very close to George W. and had a lot of respect for him . . . " -- Kenneth Lay, in a PBS interview, March 2001 Feb. 22, 2001: Lay and other Enron company officials meet with Vice President Dick Cheney's energy task force May 17, 2001: Cheney's energy task force issues its report endorsing many, but not all, proposals favored by Enron. Later, Congressman Henry Waxman says 18 of the specific points in the plan were proposed or endorsed by Enron executives. -- SF Chronicle Jan 10, 2002: "First of all, Ken Lay is a supporter, and I got to know Ken Lay when he was a head of the -- what they call the Governor's Business Council in Texas. He was a supporter of Ann Richards (former Texas governor) in my run against her in 1994, and she named him head of the Governor's Business Council and I decided to leave him in place, for the sake of continuity. And that's when I first got to know Ken and worked with Ken, and he supported my candidacy . . . " --Dubya http://www.tpj.org/press_releases/enron.html Those damn carrion feeding reporters with their irrelevant, out of bounds, and generally pesky questions.
They've already tried several Enron execs. Why is it that they had the information they needed for those cases, but not Lay's?
Prosecution strategy. Catch all the little fish and get them to flip so that you can reel in the big one.
