i sprained my ankle, numerous times, a couple months ago. since then i've been taping.

its been costing a bit of money, and i was thinkinga bout getting an ankle brace. i've gone to a couple medical stores and got some 'professional' advice, but i still think all are too bulky.

was wondering if anyone has experience with ankle braces, or just to stick with tape?

I never liked ankle braces, especially for soccer since I wear my shoes as snugly as possible. The velcro type just isn't secure enough and anything better is just too cumbersome.

I always prefer good, secure taping over a brace. Though I suppose this is a matter of personal likes and dislikes.

I've had bad ankles (loose ligaments) for years and years (and years and years, sigh . . .). And nothing really compares to a good tape job.

But it's a pain in the ass, especially if you use pre-tape -- which is sort of a must if you want to avoid ripping the hair on your leg and your skin to shreds.

That said, I've used lots of braces and the one thing I can say is this: cross-over.

Braces that cross-over the ankle (from the sole of the foot to the other side of the ankle) are the only ones that gave me enough support.

Braces that have solid or re-inforced sides up the ankle from the heel, I have found painful and ineffective.

I had a really good one for years that I just lost a few weeks ago (g@d@mmit). It was made by MacArthur, or MacDavis or MacSomething. It was just a tight neoprene ankle sleeve with two velco straps hanging from the sole of the foot that you cross-over the ankle. I liked it alot, but it was hard to find. (It was black on the outside and red on the inside -- but that's from a few years ago. May have changed.)

    Good luck.

  5. ive had ankle problems for years also (breaks, sprains, torn ligaments) and ive had probably 6 different types of braces and only one gave me good support..it was an ACE brand one, that was white...but i cant wear them beacuse they hurt the bottom of my feet, i have no clue why, but every single brace ive ever worn has hurt the bottom of my foot....i stick with tape...

I've been wearing a brace ever since I completely did my ankle (fracture and torn ligaments) 3 years ago.

I use the Axis ankle brace that you can get through Eurosport. It feels a little bulky at first but you easily get used to it and it offers great support. It ties up and has the cross-support that folks have referred to earlier.

this helps alot. i will look into all these, that mac_____ looks like the best revei w so far, to bad u dont nkow name. :(

i tape right now, the only problem is money and hair. :)

right now i shave my ankle for max adhesion. but summer is coming and i want to walk around barefoot, and its kinda embarrassing with a shaved ankle. i could get that foamy stuff, but again, thats more money, which is what im trying to get away from.

You can avoid the pre-wrap step by shaving the taping area. I highly doubt anybody will make fun of you for shaving your legs...

Here's a site I frequent a lot, and this is a discussion on ankle braces for football.

Yeah, whenever I wear my ankle brace it makes the bottom of my foot hurt, at first I thought maybe it was too tight but then when I loosened it it still bothered me though. I like the cross over kinds of braces, but they are way too bulky.
