Word around town is that the Metrostars are planning to release Andy at the start of the year. If so who are they going have to play the creative midfield. Doesn't he have his green card yet? The Galaxy might be interested also. I hope none of this is true.
If Bradley gets a hold of one of those rumored #10's you can expect Andy Williams to be dealt somewhere. If he doesn't I dont think that he has much of a choice and will have to keep him unless someone offers a good player. But I don't think anyone is going to offer anything worthwhile. But Andy is definitely the first one out the door.
andy williams... rumor around DC is that andy is going to have to take a pay cut in order to stay in NY. i dont think andy will be around in NY next year. bradley likes guys that work hard and defend. look for a DC / NY trade to happen on monday or tuesday. eddie pope jaime moreno for steve jolley allocation pick. thanks.
Andy Williams has indeed been a great player for a lot of MLS teams...teams that either missed the playoffs or finished near the bottom of the league. Also seems the teams that got rid of him: Columbus Miami New England All got a lot better when he left.
This is probably because, even though Andy is a phenominal dribbler of the ball, he usually waits too long to pass and has been labeled "selfish" throughout his MLS career. Personally, I thought he improved a lot this season, from previous ones. With 13 assists in 17 starts, he did very well. He also has not been known to defend...however I believe he improved that side of his game since coming to the MetroStars as well. Many times last season, I noticed him coming back, defending, and actually winning some balls. Maybe he is just not Bradley's type of guy....
That is crap! Andy Williams was the best Metrostar player this year. He did everything that Ramos was supposed to do. To dump him would be a bad move.
Andy Williams is a technically gifted player who continues to play better and better in MLS. I too think he was one of your better performers next year. As for whether he stays or goes, I think the issue is this. Bradley is going to implement his system. He will want a #10 to help run it. Novak was allegedly considering retirement (b/c he wants to play for Bradley, not someone else) and is less then enamored with Sarachan. Chicago needs cap space. So a deal for Nowak isn't that far out of the question. Also, when Etcheverry was being called up to the Bolivian National team, the guy that United sometimes used as his replacement in A-mid was Moreno. It's almost a given that he's being traded to your team. Maybe (and I'm only speculating here), Bradley has concluded that he wants Moreno's vision and control in midfield and doesn't really care for a #10 who does a lot of dribbling to create his chances. Who knows? Last of all, if the Metros keep Mathis, trade for Pope and Moreno, where does the allocation get used (assuming you don't trade 2 allocations)? I'd say either at D-mid or A-mid. In which case, you might conclude that Andy Williams is a fine player but you're going to acquire someone better (probably from overseas).
Let's see, Andy wiliams is a Jamaican National Team player and our best midfielder so we get rid of him to sign another foreign player and take a risk here instead of just adding to our team . Don't see it happening the more I think about it. Makes no sense. AW is a bonus for us, not a deterrent. He should stay with us as no reason to replace him.
The reason is he doesn't fit Bob scheme. Its like taking a Porche off road, when you need a 4X4 Truck.
If AWill was half as good as you all say, there'd surely be nine teams drooling over the possibility of trading for him. They'd probably be offering great "packages" of picks and players. Think that's the case?
Does he have to be the #10 Didn't Novak have Kovalenko with him? He could play out wide if needed and defensively he did improve since going to Metros.
defending??? he didn't defend at all...he's really really lazy...even guys that dont play, defend more than andy williams. coach bradley and mo johnson aren't going to like him!!!! thanks.
Re: defending??? What do you mean he was lazy when he was the best player on the field (including Clint Mathis)last season. If Bradley feel he has to trade him, I am one hundred percent sure it's not because he is lazy. The way we played last season, no one was defending.
I'd have to agree that of the games that I saw on the duece this year Andy Williams was the best player on the pitch for you guys. He was the only one in the midfield creating anything going forward. Didn't see him enough to comment on defensive liabilities..but most teams have a players like that..LA - Cienfuegos, DC - Etcheverry, Colorado - Valderamma, Dallas - Pareja, San Jose - Ekelund, Columbus - Cunningham
I seem to remember that during the year we had nothing but praise for this guy when he was the only player with his head screwed on and who could make a simple pass (apart from Timmy, of course), and now everyone seems to have turned on him? Why? He was our best outfield player by a country mile last year, would hustle when nobody else would, and is close to getting a green card (so I've heard). I don't see why we can't have him and someone like Guevara in the same team.
Sure, Andy looked great for the first month, but after a while it became very frustrating watching him dribble... and dribble... and dribble... and dribble while his teammates run around looking for a pass, which then ends up out of bounds. Williams leaves Miami -- they go from #10 to #1 in the league. Williams leaves New England -- they go from #10 to #2. It's an interesting trend, if anything.
Upon review of this thread, I propose the following Metro lineup for 2003. Howard DaSilva, Petke, Jolley, Harty Joseph, Williams, Moore, Kelly Savarese, Diallo What do you think?
Why is Andrew J. Williams so spectacular? Because he is Canadian, that is why! He will make great Metrostar player. Also, maybe you could consider signing that super guy Adolfo Valencia, too. Great goalscoreer......
I cant even understand why for one minute we would trade Andy. He's the most gifted player on our squad. No one can pass like him or open up a midfield like him. We are all talking about Bradley's style, yet he hasn't coached us for one match. You can't put a whole new style on a team just because it worked well with another team. You need to work around what you have and what Bradley has is a gifted midfielder who played great for us last year. Sure he started to fizzle out towards the end of the season but so did the whole team. You can't blame one man for the faults of the whole team.
I'll bet you guys are really happy about the trade with the Revs now; To Mutts: Teddy C--gone Big Baby--gone Andy Dribble--almost gone To Revs: Hernandez: National Team callup Kamler: did well Serna: Ready to return to pair with TnT
It happens with the BEST players. It isnt a new thing that when a new coach comes in he evaluates the talent and sees what he can work with and what he cant. It really doesn't matter if that player has had a good year or not. It wether or not that player can repeat it under the new scheme he is going to impliment. The only time a player stays is if he can play under the new style, or the team can't get rid of him. Andy Williams will be more valuable to Bradley in gaining player he knows he can manage and fit into his plan. Having Williams here(as good as he is) will only be a waste of time to the coach and player. It's harder for me to beleive that in such a CRUCIAL role that the AM position is, someone can't see that a coach may want a different player. It's just not that Willaims got lots of assist, is HOW he got them and he wont be able to do the same things he did last year in getting them.
