The Fire always have half a dozen guys on trial with somebody come the offseason. I expect Williams to be back as the article mentions, I just hope he can have another (or maybe more) solid season.
I suppose "Andy Williams on Trial With Coventry" is better than "Andy Williams on Trial In Coventry"...
Ok. Well that's great for Andy, but sad for us. Nice to see him get some English attention, just goes to show how rich our club is with talent. Coventry is battling in the 1st Division and they need all the help they can get!
let me lay it down for you like this -- Andy williams is a good guy and every so often he plays with consistency that is beneficial for the team... but what we need is more of this "consistent play." perhaps some practice with the chaps and lads of england will help him to improve.
andy did help us out alot this year, but i don't think it'll be a bad thing if we do lose him. he's supposed to be a playmaker, but he's only average at that. if jonathon bolanos can get his fitness up, he'd be more than a suitable replacement for andy. after that, andy's just taking up space on the bench. there's a reason that he's never spent more than a year at any club. its becuase he's good when you're going through a rebuilding year, but he's not gonna take a team to a championship (i do realize the irony in this statement, but think about it before you react).
I don't get how anyone can make a statement like that about a player we have never seen play real minutes in an MLS match and not expect us to believe they are talking out of their ass.
Well, we saw him play a good 40 minutes agaist a full strength crew team. and we've also seen him play plenty with the costa rican national team, and he looked good there, too. i can't say for sure if he'll play well with the Fire, but i can say for sure that andy doesn't exactly play that great all the time, and it wouldn't be a great loss if he left.
I am all over the opinion that sometimes Andy dissappears, he definately has consistency issues. However, you said it right there....we have never seen Bolanos play real MLS minutes, that crew game was a twilight zone episode, not MLS. The CR national team time is great, but I haven't seen him play. It bodes well for his ability, but frankly we had him for months and he still wasn't getting playing time...either he wasn't in shape or he wasn't in sync and both of those can be as big a knock on the guy as the consistency issue is for Andy. If you want to take door #2 over the known fixer-upper, that's yer right, but it's not the call I would make.
I think he had 5 caps with Costa Rica back in 2000. Can anybody honestly say they remember seeing plenty of Jonathan Bolanos on the Costa Rican national team?? I'm not knocking Bolanos. I've heard great things about him from other Fire players and he is a fun guy to talk to. I hope he turns out to be everything and more that we want him to be. But it's still not fair to make a comparison of an unknown quantity to a known quantity. When Bolanos starts playing and proving himself to be a better, more consistant player then people should start making statements like this. Until then it's just people making up their own fiction.
I mentioned to Pelota I remembered seeing him play once for Costa Rica (I do) and he acted like I found Jesus Christ living on Western Avenue. Guess he doesn't get much of it.
Did anyone else think about AW when curt Shilling got all that positive press for going on a Red Sox message board after signing with them to set the record straight on a number of issues? I thought that was a classy move by Andy last year. I was somewhat skeptical if he could fill the Nowak role without replacing Nowak's production. Clearly the burden needed to be spread around a bit. I was very happy with his play this year. He did disappear from matches from time to time, but that certainly happens to all creative players when you either A) run into a good DM (how many playmakers have "disappeared" against the Fire this year ); or B) the team is having success bypassing or going around central midfield. I thought he was particularly strong at crunch time. I'm not ready to call him "Mr. October" but it was a good month for Andy. Seriously, could anyone have stepped into the No. 10 role more effectively or with more class considering the fact that he was replacing the heart of the team for the first five years? Good luck to AW with Coventry. If things work out, I would be happy for him, but considering some of our other potential losses this off season, I REALLY want to see him wearing Fire Red in April.
I agree. And the story with Andy has always been he only lasts a year or so with every MLS team he plays for. Well, as far as I'm concerned he has found his home in Chicago.
