The Cup going to a country rampant with crime and AIDS. FIFA has made a fatal mistake. Six years from now is not a very long time to improve the underlying socio and economical problems. I'd be very very surprised if no tourist gets robbed at gunpoint or gets raped during the Cup in 2010.

The country can easily produce the best world cup in Africa, it is the richest Country and has no econmic problems in making the World Cup a succesfull one. South Africa has hosted the rugby world cup and the cricket world cup without ANY problems, so i doubt they will have any now. only 6 more years to go

Gun fight is normal in South Africa. It is a fact.......few countries got the same crime rate as South Africa. What you say is true, but thats in 3rd world South Africa, of course there is crime everywhere, I have never seen crime in my life and ive been living 18 years, i have never heard a gun shot in my life. Im not saying there is no crime, im just saying its not what u think. In the areas where surely all the tourists will be going will not be full of crime as u think, there are no terrotist atacks as in many of the arab countries.

I said "robbed at gunpoint". Guns are very rare in China. Sure there are robberies, rapes, and AIDS in China and everywhere else but it's nowhere as bad as it is in SA. With SA, you're talking about a country with a very high crime rate, unemployment rate, and AIDS infection rate. Don't tell me that fans won't taking these into consideration when deciding if they want to go to SA to see the Cup.

faucsk.....better for your government (if you are south african) to start doing something for such crime rates otherwise it's gonna be the worst WC ever. There is no single country with no crimes or diseases but we are talking about rates. 10% is much different than 30 and by far can't be compared to 50 and higher, if you know what I mean. If politics and bribes managed to let South Africa host the World CUP in 2010, IT WILL NEVER CONVINCE A SINGLE FAN TO RISK HIS LIFE OR FEEL UNSECURED DURING THE DAY OR RIGHT AFTER DARK.

From where I sit, I see not much difference between the two countries (eg both until recently were in denial on AIDS), except for the free reporting of such !!!

South Africa was by far the best choice for me, and as they were robbed by a corrupt bidding process and a stupid Kiwi from hosting 2006, it had to go to them this time.

Where did I say that there's no AIDS in China? AIDS is prevalent all over the world, but it just so happens that SA has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the world.

Just look at the figures. In SA (with a population of 44 million), the HIV/AIDS adult prevalence rate is about 20%. Whereas in China (population 1.3 billion), about 1.5 million people of all ages have HIV/AIDS (about 0.1% of population).

Azaezoo,I know that you are very very disapointed that Egypt lost,but now stop complaining about how South Africa is out of control etc!It's true that it might be a dangerous country,but too little too late as the World Cup will be held there come 2010 so get over it!South Africa was awarded the final because it was the best country to host it overall!That's a fact whether you like it or not!Instead of complaining,you should congratulate the winner and wish them well in order to have other fifa World Cups in Africa.And who gives a damn if Michel Platini brings his wife anyway?I couldn't care less and most people probably wouldn't care either!

Geez I'm sure if there had been a BigSoccer in 1988 people would have been complaining then about how the US had so many guns and was only given the World Cup as a marketing tool in a country where no one even cares about "soccer". They'll play to half-empty stadiums!

Read the technical reports of each country before crying wolf. South Africa had emerged in the past few weeks as the clear favorite, and I congratulate them for having the chance to host it. Let's hope they do a great job.

congrats to SA, although i would have preferred MOR. Now that they're in the football world's spotlight, it will hopefully bring attention to the crime/HIV problems they are facing.
Another, minor issue, is stadia. According to worldstadiums.com there are only 6 with >40k capacity, which i beleive is the minimum for WC (by comparasion, GER will have 12 venues in 2006). So you can add the cost of upgrading other stadiums to be in compliance along with the cost of added security to handle the crime/HIV.
The cynic in me thinks this is potentially good news for us here in America. If SA doesn't have its act together by 2008, FIFA might have to look elsewhere on short notice. USA would be the first choice. Rule out Europe because they just hosted one. Japorea could do it, but again, they recently hosted one. Brasil? Maybe, but USA can do it better and besides, 2014 is Brasil's to lose. MEX and MOR? i don't think they could be ready on short notice.

Look, six years is plenty of time to get SA's crime problem under control. As for the HIV and full-blown AIDS cases in the country and the continent, that will take a concerted and sustained effort by the world and needn't be done solely for this tourney.

How many visiting attendees to the Rugby WC and the Cricket World Cup contracted the virus? Are there statistics concerning the number of attendees who may have been crime victims during the aforementioned events?

South Africa's got issues but some of them can be rendered irrelevant by the time '10 rolls around.

So it'll be WC 2010 USA.

Because there's a chance that South Africa won't be the same country in 6 years and things over there seem to be getting worse. So just like the Women's world cup last year, FIFA will need to change the location in a hurry and the US is the only nation capable of pulling it off and making it PROFITABLE. Hurray for us.
