The clown that MLS has selected for this match is non other than..... Jair Marrufo. God help us all and piss on Columbus.
Okay, so exactly which ref are we supposed to jump for joy over? That's not a rhetorical question. I'm honestly wondering. The game hasn't even been called yet. Quake fans haven't even given this ref a chance. And here some of us are bitching and moaning over him. I just think it's getting old. It's making us look like the biggest whiners in the league. Let the game be played. And then bitch and moan - IF you have legitimate reasons to.
Quite true wayne, still, they're better than using some toothless, inbred columbus fan as an official, aren't they?:
There is no one to jump for joy over and that's the whole point. Drag Brian Hall out of semi-retirement and put him on the pitch. Better the devil you know than the current crop of AYSO rejects.
Off the top of my head, I can't remember a specific Quakes match that Jair Marrufo did, but I do remember him, and the impression I have is not at all positive. Might be slim pickings, but even so, this is not a good choice.
I sure hope the Quakes aren't concerning themselves over the ref as much as this board is. If they are it's going to be a quick exit, IMHO. Hopefully, they are figuring out ways to get the ball in the net.
Jesus Christ, I didn't think everyone was going to take our banter so seriously. Oh, well, the fridge has got some Henry Weinhard's ale. Gotta go visit there.
I looked it up on MLSNet. This year Jair did three Quakes games, a pair of 4-0 wins vs Colo and Dallas at home and a 2-4 loss at DC. I didn't see the two home games (shame on me), but I don't remember anything out of the ordinary in the DC game. No goals in those three games were PKs. So I guess the conclusion is that one team is going to score 4 goals. Hope it's the Quakes.
Great point! I have seen very few, if any posts EVER on this board regarding a loss that don't explicitly blame each and every loss the Quakes have experienced to the refs. According to a lot of the posters, the quakes would be 30-0 but for the MIY, and you know that's not right! I do think that people are getting a little out of hand regarding the alleged conspiracy against the Quakes. It makes us look more than a little silly. I have seen some poor officiating this year, but not only directed against the Quakes. Have any of you folks watched the ESPN2 Saturday games? A lot of these games have questionable calls/no calls, but you don't see these dredged up for weeks on the other boards. The quality of officiating in MLS is uniformly poor - get over it!
Damn, I'm so sick and tired of you Californians expressing your West Coast ethnocentrism toward us midwesterners, whether you mean it or not. Besides, you're getting my Ohio brethren and sisters mixed up with their neighbors to the south and east in Kentucky and West Virginia.
Thanks for doing some research, due time. It must have been last year that I was ticket at that ref. Let's just hope it doesn't come down to a poor call (either way) today.
If the guys concentrate on doing their actual job, and getting the damn ball in the net, numerous times, they shouldnt have to worry about the ref's calls. Just my 2 cents.......
[for the record] I do not take offense to the quoted statement in any way, however I have posted "...and the ref sucked" in some of my posts this season, but it wasn't until the QUAKE'S Sept 14th and Sept 25th games (two marjorly important games) that I really became outraged and vocal about the crap that conspired on the fields during these matches due to the officiating. Maybe I was inconsistent (similar to the referees) about stating my displeasure by not also complaining about inequities occurring to other teams as well, but it doesn't mean I wasn't aware of them. My major gripe up until this point was media coverage--I mean the lack thereof. And I surely dropped my feelings in those email boxes as well, and continue to. I feel completely justified in my complaints and don't feel at all like I'm blowing anything out of porportion. Sucky Salazar and Idiot Itaya deserve every nanogram of my ire and so does MLS. [/for the record] GO QUAKES!!
yalpstel-- You Go Girl!!! Fer Chrissakes, guys, we're fans of the San Jose Earthquakes. We're supposed to be biased, GD it!!! Even-handed analyses wait for later days, not now. If somebody else wants to call me a whiner for bitching when my team gets screwed, so be it. They got screwed and by the refs, and that's it.
Warning since there's no [R] in title, this post includes a discussion of some things that happened but not the final score. Marufo surely didn't have a bad game compared with what we've seen the rest of this season. He had a couple of bad mistakes though. The play between Eddie and that punk Garcia was bad. Should have been a yellow on Garcia for the original foul, and yellow on Eddie for getting in the punk's face with his finger, and a 2nd yellow to the punk for simulation, as obviously no one can push over a full grown man with a single finger. Also Clark deserved a red for punching Ariel in the face. MLS better, at least, dispense some video justice on that one.... they probably won't, nothing about MLS's approach to officiating has shown they're capable of fairness or reason. Also Marufo let several professional fouls and fouls on Donovan go unpunished. Other than those things, not too bad compared to other games we've seen. I think, although there's not single camera shot to prove it, a combination of the two camera replays of the first goal suggest that punk Garcia was offside. On the replay, he was standing still when he received the ball. If that's the position he as was in when the ball was played, which he likely was given that he wasn't running onto the ball, he was offside. I think the ARs yet again made a mistake that gifted a team a goal. -KMJvet
I agree that the official did a decent, though not flawless job. Agree that Freddy Garcia deserved a yellow for his tackle that preceded Robinson's ire, but I wouldn't have given him a second for falling to the ground. Live, I thought Graziani had taken one in the face from Clark, but the replay really led me to believe that Clark brought his hands up but never struck Ariel (who seemed to put in an Oscar bid of his own). And yes, there were several calls that Landon didn't get. One very early on where a defender had his arms wrapped around him from behind comes to mind. Oh, and I also had serious thoughts about whether Garcia was onside on the first goal. I was looking for it on the replay, though no angle really answered the question. Just thankful we didn't have another officiating debacle.
Quaker - You must be referring to Duncan Oughton trying to "hug" Donovan I was cringing at this, knowing that the ref could have dropped yellow on the Kiwi middie if he kept trying to mug Landon like THAT. Mike Clark was LUCKY to just get YELLOW with that bad tackle in the 2nd half. Totally stupid tackle there. I thought offsides calls were screwed up in general, for BOTH teams.
