The host will be Egypt! It was decided by a committee of 11 in Cairo today. Here are the results of the voting:

    Egypt : 7
    Libya : 2
    Ivory Coast : 1
    Algeria : 1

I'm really not that surprised by the results, considering that there is civil war in Algeria and Ivory Coast and that Libya's facilities are not all that great. This is Egypt's 4th time hosting the CAN Finals, as they have hosted in 1959, 1974, and 1986.

This is so huge for Egypt because the 2006 CAN Finals are also serving as qualification for the 2006 World Cup. By hosting, Egypt is already in the CAN 2006 Finals and will play every match at home. Count on them being in Germany in June of 2006.

At this point Egypt probably was the best and most obvious choice. Ivory Coast is having some political problems at the moment and perhaps they would have been over by 2006. However, the current political problems probably didn't help the bid.

Egypt turned out to be the only real choice here so congrats to them. I'm sure thaey will put on a good ANC. And can we say that we now know two teams who have qualified for Germany 06? ;)

I thought I read that The Gambia won the rights to host the African U17 Championship in 2005? Is this correct? If so, it is good news for such a small country.
