We know that Miami ( Barça ) almost surely will be in MLS by 2010 ( and I again think that Laporta wished a club in Miami or NYC ..... ). We know that Wilpon has economic difficulties, but probably he is still interested to bring a NYC soccer team in MLS. Now my idea is this : can the Borough Boys ( Nick... ) to write a letter to the most important and above all MOST RICH club in the world and to explain that an investiment in MLS and above all in NYC can be an enormous success for the spanish club ? Surely the Real can help Wilpon to build soon a 30.000 soccer stadium in Queens and above all there should be a incredible situation : THE MOST IMPORTANT CLUB IN THE WORLD, IN THE MOST IMPORTANT CITY OF THE WORLD FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT SPORT IN THE WORLD !!!!!! I hope that al least this time Nick and the other boys are agree with me and that we can at least TO PROPOSE this charming project to WILPON, to REAL MADRID and even to the MLS !!!! REAL NEW YORK CITY IN MLS BY 2012 !!!!
Funny you say this - We have had meetings with many people interested in mls2nyc and the idea of bringing a major european club into the mix has been brought up - ill leave it at that as i dont want to start any uneccesary talk as all it was was ideas being thrown around but yes it has been brought up and it is a good idea and we continue to look to turn these ideas into a possible real thing! Although we already have a REAL in the league Right now everyone is focused on miami vancouver portland ottowa and st louis - and these cities deserve the spotlight right now - once the league decides what two teams will be coming in next - im sure we will learn the plans for future expansion - lets let the current situation take its toll - let the league say who they are picking and then im sure Garber will say - We will expand again here or - we are not expanding until - such a such a date! I just say Good luck to the current candidates!
With Barca (miami is practically signed, sealed, delivered) and Real having "clubs" in MLS now, I'm surprised the big teams of EPL or Serie A have not sent some kind of delegation to test the waters about the potential for a Club on American soil to relate to. Inter New York, New York Arsenal, etc.
Technically, even though they chose the name they thought would sound cool, Real Salt Lake has no official connection to Madrid. I believe Colorado Vapids is part of Arsenal though.
They have some loose arrangement through Stan Kronke, who owns Colorado and owns some shares in Arsenal, but you can't really say that one is part of the other however. Guadalajara and Chivas USA are more closely related than that. Also, Barcelona is having second thoughts about getting in MLS right now.
Reportedly Real gave Salt Lake some money back when Salt Lake started up Also Barca is on the brink of finishing Miami
Do you think its legit or is it Claure putting pressure on MLS. I was watching the Barca vs Espanyol match and i heard Garber was in attendance for that game - I found that interesting!
Barca is putting pressure on MLS for some reason or another. If the Miami bid was being reconsidered or even pulled (by Claure/Barcelona), then Garber would have been no where near the Camp Nou. Even better still is that they released this info two days before Garber shows up. This is a ploy as the day is long. Let's sit back and enjoy the next round.
PS - i really dont follow la liga but i watch the games - shocking result that was!! I have to admit - i have been watching a lot of french games this season - watched Bocanegra in action the other day!
Speaking of the French. The champions league match up between Barcelona and Lyon should be a good one. I can't wait. I believe that they are playing Tuesday. Also playing a scrimmage match on Tuesday is Velez v RBNJ. VAMOS FORTIN ************!!
My dilemma with Chivas USA, Red Bull New York, and Barca Miami is present in this idea as well. If a team called Real New York City (operated by RM) comes to midtown Manhattan with Henry, Ronaldo, whomever, with a 30,000 person stadium, I would still not support them. In fact, I would probably go to RBNY (as they were once the Metros to me) All I want is an identity. I know people call for expansion in NYC for many reasons. Almost all of them I agree with. But the major reason for me (the intiating factor) was the cancellation of Metro history and literally rebranding of the team. It doesn't have to be as blatant as an Austrain Energy drink. It could be a FMF or La Liga club. But the problem is still the same. Why can't we have something that reflects NYC history and has NYC identity. I would be proud in taking USL1 team in a 10,000 person stadium full of D2 college grads over Real New York City.
I am agree with you. In fact my hope is ( was..) that Wilpon puts the NYCFC in MLS soon, but if this possibility doesn't exist, however I wish a true soccer team in NYC !!!!
i promise you, Wilpon is smart enough to know how not to brand a team. NYCFC will have it's own identity.
Surely this is very important, Chris !!! But my question is always the same : have us some real hope for 2012 ?
right now - NO - I dont think so sadly - Anything CAN happen and if this economy bouces back - then hey - yea - maybe Wilpon does it and we can be in place by 2012 - From everything I hear the Short Term Plans for NYC2 have been altered - Its 2009 right now - They did an environmental study for stadiums years back but I am not sure if they would have to redo the environmental study - if they do - thats year long study. 2012 is not OUT of the question but lets not hold our breath on it right now. The best thing we can do right now - is not to speculate a timeline - just the fact that its still alive is more than enough for me. Now - Im not thinking 2018 or something - I think we maybe talking 2013 at this point. Lets just sit tight and enjoy the season! I think as the year goes on - we will hear more about this. Right now there are other cities awaiting their fate. Good Luck to them - Get Er Don Garber - PLEASE select St Louis!
I think that there is always hope for anything that you want to achieve. It's simply a matter of making things happen. If Wilpon is interested in this venture, and being the smart business man that he is, he knows that he has to strike while the iron is still hot. There are several factors contributing to the delay, the least of which is the opening of CitiField. Personally I feel that he's trying to figure out how to pay for the whole thing and then go from there. I'm sure that he's killing himself knowing that he can't take advantage of the cheap prices of raw materials and possibly labor at the moment. But let's give it time, let's wait for CitiField to open and hopefully we might see some news about this project come out by then.
