I'm sitting here flipping through the channels and notice that the same four or five "infomercials" are running on about 50 different cable channels. I'm not even a big television guy, but I've seen at least large chunks of all of those informercials. They get played ad naseum. So it has me thinking... What if MLS made an infomercial and bought up some late late night airtime on some of these channels? I know the league isn't great at marketing itself, but MLS already pays ESPN to run their games. If they made music videos with soccer highlights and then featured a few star players, it would be a lot more appealing to the average channel surfer than some workout equipment or penis pill. Maybe MLS could appeal to the late night drunks and loafers flipping the channels. Wait, as I'm sobering up I'm realizing this is a horrible idea. Maybe MLS should just make a COMmercial and actually run it. The "new soccer nation" thing was okay, but it wouldn't appeal to any new fans.
For a 7 post newbie in the MLS forum....that's a great idea, in comparison to most of the drivel here. Welcome to BigSoccer.
Would MLS Wrap be similar to an informercial? Anyway, I'd like to see that get to the point where they could do what the Argentine highlight show does, with bands playing in the segues. Between highlights, Sean Wheelock can throw it over to The Strokes or somebody in studio, then return for the next one. Anyway...welcome to bigsoccer, LSUnited, and... G - E - A- U - X, Geaux Fire, geaux!
It's actually a great idea. Just showing "Greatest Goals" or something similar would be bound to hook a few viewers.
What would i expect to pay for such entertainment? $59.99? $49.99? No! $29.99! And if we buy airtime in the next 10 minutes, we'll throw in MLS's Greatest Saves at no cost to you! That's an $80 value for $29.99!
Most companies that use infomercials pay nothing for their TV time. However, they have a deal worked out with the TV station or cable channel that gives them a percentage of all sales that come through that program. I've always wondered how many sales the average infomercial generates and I guess this probably be privilaged. But buying the time can't be too expensive.
But wait! There's more! If you call in the next five minutes, we'll throw in this awesome PLASTIC HORN, a $12.99 value, absolutely FREE! Actually, this'd be great. We could get those English-sounding guys from all the informercials to add a sense of legitimacy for the Europhiles among us.
Another problem with doing an informcial for MLS is that these things play at crap times. For Fox Sports World, this is often in the middle of the afternoon, prime housewife time. Perhaps you should be selling MLS's greatest goal celebrations with the players ripping off their shirts?
