In the potential future derbies thread in the expansion forums, the idea of derby similar to the Carolina Cup Challenge amongst the soon to be 4 teams along the Amtrak Northeast Corridor. I was wondering what the opinions of New York Fans were regarding this idea. The idea would be that there could be a train or two from the competing cities to the cup location. There would be supporters cars for each of the supporters groups, that fans from NY could buy tickets for the Empire Supporters Club, RagingBullNation, or Kearny Army car in a joint package with tickets for a Red Bull Supporters section, and a meal/beverage package. The cost would run between $150 and $350 depending on the location and the type of train (Acela or Regional that the car was on). The cars average between 50 and 100 riders per car, so packages could vary based on budget, and large supporters groups from each team could set up tailgating outside the stadium alongside the chartered buses from the train station. It's an idea I personally think has legs. But I'd like to hear what your ideas and opinions are on it regarding staging, set up, organization, timing etc. It would be a great competition to set up in 2010 when Philly joins the ranks, and the current holders of the Cup (or plate or whatever) could have their supporters group accompany the trophy to and from the competition. Thanks.
1. Few people care enough about preseason tournaments to travel. 2. The fascination of bringing any detail of English football culture to America is curious, all the more so among those who know how depressing England actually is. 3. Taking federal government subsidies into account, I hereby rename it the Joe Biden Cup. 4. Other than that, yeah, sure, whatever.
Uh huh. I suppose you'd be waiting for us at the train station. Well, the jokes on you. We're going to get off one stop early and hope in a delivery van!
Amtrak had something involving the Rangers, Flyers, Devils & at the time the Washington Capitals were in our division before they made it three divisions in both conferences. This was during the regular season of course. If we had this with the Revs, DC, RBNY & the new Philly team for the regular season. That's fine with me.
How about an "Amway Cup", which would be a mini-tournament amongst all of the teams with multi-level marketing companies as jersey sponsors? You'd already have LA Galaxy (Herbalife), Real Salt Lake (Xango) and of course San Jose (Amway themselves!). The teams would just sell the tickets to the heads of the various supporter groups, then those people could get members in the supporter groups to distribute tickets for them, then those members could get their kids to go door to door to sell the tickets, and the kids could force their schoolmates to sell tickets at their youth soccer games. By god, all the stadiums would be sold out!
So...why don't we take the four teams mentioned, call it the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference, take the other four, give them another division name, etc... What? Too American for you guys? I withdraw.
You sure you don't work for Amtrak? I like the idea minus the Amtrak part. For some of us, its pretty expensive to ride Amtrak. I'd just take the Atlantic Cup we have with DC and turn it into a four team Atlantic Cup with NE, NY, Philly and DC as the combatants. For those to you who think this is yet another fascination with things European, please look up the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy.
So are Ireland and Scotland. With Wales having a club the the Championship, I've always wondered why Northern Ireland never had a club in the FA. As much as we don't want it to be, Northern Ireland is still a part of the UK.
The Atlantic Cup expanded to four teams, I like it. Then we can take a boat to the matches. Foxborough might be hard to reach by boat, but the others should be accessible. Yeah, a boat - why take a train if you can take a boat!
There are two clubs from Wales in the Championship. Swansea and Cardiff. The rivalry between these two teams is one of the most intense in football. You might see one of these two teams in the Premiership next season.
oh yea...i forgot about swansea. but seriously, why doesn't NI have a pro team in the english leagues? there's no doubt in my mind that it'd be well supported. they're mad about football up in the north.
The best way to do this would be for Amtrak to work in conjunction with MLS and maybe force the matches between the 4 teams be scheduled on the same day for the 6 matches each team will have to play. While I'm on this, why doesn't the USA make a national high speed train that can get me to Chicago, Vegas, and LA?
Hockey used to have so much unique character that they threw away in this ill-fated attempt to try and reinvent themselves as the NBA on Ice.
at least they made dark jersies home and got rid of ties. and to clarify i was being sarcastic. please bring back the old NHL
