There is an ESPN report today identifying him as one of three MLS players "under consideration" at Barcelona.

For those that don't know, Cade Cowell is a 2003 winger for the San Jose Earthquakes.

He has a goal and an assist in 371 minutes (14 appearances including 3 starts) to date in the 2020 MLS campaign (including the MLS is Back Tournament knock out rounds).

Cade has all of the physical tools to be a very good player... His size/speed combo is legit and seems to have a good touch on his passes. Still so very young... but he sure doesn't look it. Kid looks like he is in his 20s.

I'm a San Jose fan and I've watched every game he's played so far. He is raw but super talented and physically gifted for a 17 year old. That move he made on Steres of the Galaxy for his assist on Wednesday was world class.

Sky's the limit for this kid but he still needs to go to a lower level Euro league to develop. Barca would be a bad move IMO

Barca is never a "bad move" for a 17 year old.... especially one who is admittedly raw. The football world is chalk full of players that have come up thru the Barca youth system. Play w/ the u19s and then likely go on loan or to Barca 2 in a year or two. Even if he never broke thru with the senior team he would still only be 19 or 20 after a couple of years learning from one of the best clubs in the world.

He's looked really good on a streaky SJ team. I live in the area and would be more of a fan if MLS/ESPN/whomever didn't blackout local broadcasts. But he's got that young precociousness where he doesn't care who he plays or where he lines up, he just wants to get after it and score goals. Great to see and I can't imagine he'll be in MLS for long

Uh, maybe wake me up if this guy ever scores and has a couple of assists in the same game.

I think thé US would be very dangerous with him, and Pulisic running in behind defenders. The pace he has is electric. Combine that with his football brain and technical ability, and he’s a terror for defenses.

If I’m Jesse Marsch, I’m trying to make this kid my first signing at Leipzig. You can loan him to Salzburg for a season. Then with Clark coming over next year, could have a nice little American contingent.

The pace and power are undeniable but it looks to me like the technique has a long way to go. Hopefully he is working like crazy on that left foot

He's a Timo Werner starter kit. Now I know that's a pejorative these days because Werner's been trash for Chelsea but his RBL stint was straight fire. Keep working with Wondo kid and watch all the game tape you can of old Werner and now Haaland. He has the physical tools and growing technical nous to emulate them.

    Bidding starts at $10m.

i dont see anything similar in werner and cowell.....other than maybe speed and size.

Werner has zero dribble/finesse/possession skills from what I have seen.....Cowell does. Hopefully Cowell doesnt look at Werner as a role model....very incomplete and limited player who only works in a counter-attack scheme.

Na, Cade is a terrible dribbler at this pt. His sole move is to try to beat you with pure speed. He doesn't even really do a shoulder fake. He should at least do that to get the defender thinking in the other direction. Let alone does he do anything like a scoop dribble toward the end line to see if the defender reacts, and then goes in the opposite direction. Doing that and rolling his foot over the ball initially would also help mitigate his suspect touch atm.

He's definitely in that Werner, Vardy, or Morris mold of player that probably doesn't work for the top clubs, unless maybe they convert him to a wing-back as they like to do. The rather huge caveat is these are already good players he's being compared to. And unlike them he has several years to iron out his weaknesses before the dust settles.

Cade should stay at SJ thru next season to keep working on his issues to maximize his rather large natural ability. Whether they have the right assistants to get the best out of him, I don't know. But he'll get a lot of lower pressure game experience before he moves abroad. Then if he's still a similar player I like a move to a Leicester type for 10-15 million. If he starts to evolve then we can think about big clubs. That's always going to be tantalizing to the player and selling club though, so that's where he may end up regardless, for bad or good.

idk...havent watched full games but he has shown some extraordinary close control and clever ball touch/dribble from the highlights I have seen from him.
Barca don't seem like the type of club that would want a werner-type....but maybe....
plus, he's what 17? idk.....to be doing what he's doing at his age puts him on the adams, mckennie, reyna arc, imo....

I said the same in some other thread while watching the game last night. He'd be an excellent forward for a pressing team. I don't think he's bad technically, but I don't think he's great either and wouldn't fit well with teams who emphasize more intricate buildup play. But put him in a team that presses and then goes to goal full-speed ahead when they turn it over, and he could be a monster.

And for anyone who thinks I'm being too negative saying he's not great technically, Dest is great technically; Reyna is great technically. Those guys have Barca-level technical ability. All I'm saying is that Cowell is not that.

A kid who spent almost all of the ‘21 season as a 17 y/o needs to be more consistent? That goes for every 17 y/o in the world.

Kid is highly likely to be in Europe come January 2023.

thank you for your snarky comment. There were plenty of 17 year olds in MLS who were more consistent in 21 than he was including Kevin parades, Caden Clark and Justin Che so not an unreasonable comment/observation if he's heading to Europe after this season

What are you talking about? Inconsistency defined Caden Clark's season, more so than Cowell.

Regardless, inconsistency won't determine whether Cowell moves. He isn't getting bought at 18 to slot right into the lineup. A team is buying the athleticism lottery ticket, and they'll want to bring him in while he still is young enough to learn.

Clark and Cowell were the two most hyped HG players at the start of this past season with both falling out of form around the same time.

If Cowell can complete simple passes/crosses more often then he’ll have far more suitors in Europe. Far too many times he’d be 1v1 against another defender on the wing with a teammate around the center who he couldn’t complete the pass to. This piece of his game along with his link up play in general is his biggest opportunity for improvement.

Rumor (I couldn't confirm the publication) of getting a Mexican passport, which would help with a move to Liga MX:
