Okay, so Brian McBride has scored in his first game for Everton. Tell me if anyone is missing from (or doesn't belong on) this list of Americans to score in the Premiership and the old First Division. 1. Roy Wegerle, Queen's Park Rangers. (yeah, that was a long time ago). 2. John Harkes, Sheffield Wednesday (did he score for the Owls in the top flight? I know he scored the English League's "Goal of the year" when they were in the next level down.) 3. Joe-Max Moore, Everton 4. Claudio Reyna, Sunderland 5. Jovan Kirovski, Birmingham City 6. Brian McBride, Everton.
ah, yes. I found this about Cobi through Google on a soccertimes.com page: Notched his first goal for Coventry in a 1-0 win over Norwich Nov. 19, 1994 ... Scored a second game-winning goal for Coventry on Feb. 11, 1995 in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace ... But was Preki a US citizen when he played for Everton?
Harkes also played and scored for Derby ("Darby") County. I believe there was a fellow named Mike Masters who was the first to score in the EPL. This is purely from my memory. Can anyone confirm?
Mike played for Colchester United - not EPL for sure. I think he was the first American to score at Wembley (one of hose Vans/Autoglass/Whathave you trophies), but I'm not sure [He did score, just don't know if he was the first] For the record - One Cap vs Australia.
It was the F.A. Trophy in which he scored; not sure if it was the final or a semi-final. Also, he did have a cap against Ukraine circa 1992. I was at that game @ Rutgers University Stadium. Not sure if that and not Australia was the only cap or if he did indeed have two caps (or perhaps more).
Lets try to nip t his in the bud (in case you weren't being sarcastic) Ricketts is not an American. His parents are not American.
Not Premier League per se, but Dagenham's Junior McDougald scored against then Premier League Ipswich Town in last season's FA Cup.
Thanks for the support. Once again I learn the leason that every sarcastic comment MUST be followed by a smiley.
edit* sorry I just re-read the original post and realized you were talking pre premiere league division 1 but for what its worth.....*edit ....Paul Conway (now with the Charleston Battery) played 5 years in Division 1 and Division 2 scoring 70 goals in 130 matches. Started in 93 with Carlisle United and the moved to Northhampton Town. Has played two games at Wembley winning the Auto Windshields Cup in 1997 and a League Championship medal in 1995.
Interesting how a guy with a pretty solid career in the lower divisions of England was never much of a factor (if any) in the US MNT those years... I guess we do have some depth. So, back to my original question. As far as goals in the top flight it's, in more or less chronological order: 1. Roy Wegerle, Queen's Park Rangers. 2. John Harkes, Sheffield Wednesday or Derby Co. 3. Cobi Jones, Coventry 4. Joe-Max Moore, Everton 5. Claudio Reyna, Sunderland 6. Jovan Kirovski, Birmingham City 7. Brian McBride, Everton.
So you've decided Preki didn't count? Also, and I dont feel like looking it up, but I believe a few of the guys from the 1950 WC squad, later went over to England to play. Whether any of them played in the top division or scored I'm not sure
Okay. Junior has scored for the Daggers this season in the FA Cup, I believe or for another team. Okay, I wonder if that was the first time we had an American and Canadian pair upfront for the first on a Div 1 team anywhere in the world. Maybe in the A-league but the MLS, no? Also probably the first time that an American scored against an American while another American was the other goalkeeper. Awesome.
Was yesterday's game (Spurs V Everton) the first when 3 USA-Born players started in (Keller, McBride, Baardsen)?
While not EPL...I believe Kirovski/Berhalter/Feuer all were on the pitch last year in Div 1 Crystal Palace - Wimbledon Also Gibbs/Kovalenko/Sanneh did this is Germany once I believe...

Here's Wegerle's great goal on Quicktime.. http://www.qprcinema.com/9091.avi 1991 with Queens Park Rangers vs Leeds. It's worth the download time..
Here's an interesting fact about Junior. He is the only semi-professional player to score against two Premiership sides in the FA Cup third round having netted against Charlton Atheltic and Ipswich Town in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
Wow. That really is an amazing goal. He went around 5 guys in a weaving dribble and fired home from the top of the box. Amazing.
