As someone who used to love DC, I hope that Trump scatters all of the federal agencies across the least-inhabitable corners of the Midwest, South, and Southwest. The institutions now serve themselves and other nations. They need to be integrated into the fabric of the country, providing jobs in places where they are needed. The elites need to be reintroduced to the rest of the country. That’s a good place to start to rebuild.
It will be a big deal when people find out who the pipe bomber is and we process the ramifications of that.
I hear is their MAGA. But also saw that the survives of when the military was on college campuses in the 80s who are not parents and grandparents led the charge. What will drive Americans to protest to the level of SK or even Israel when Bibi wanted to change the constitution? I actually envision Trump calling in the national guard to stop the count due to reports of illegal activity in the swing states. Not sure even that will turn people.
I will entertain this because though I disagree with you politically, I will give you credit for being civil. Nietzsche's Dad was on to a point and I think you have described it that we have to accept that the American public is dumb. And I don't mean that necessarily like insulting and angry liberal you guys are dumb, I mean that our public has over the years due to poor educational structure and partially intent by I guess those who oversee education in states, I believe a lot of Republican forces have destroyed the understanding of civics and the ability to read and comprehend. I can link to it but the latest literacy stats say that 50 percent of Americans, are so poor in literacy, that they struggle to read drug prescriptions. Consider that for a minute when we think about the average public in the working class and how that inability combined with the fact that we don't teach civics in school because everybody's being geared up to just pass exams and and pass test. This means, that we've got a greater amount of an uneducated populace. So like the article says, we think we are better but we're no better now, than a lot of third world countries, where the kids never go to school and everyone is working menial jobs as soon as they reach working age. I mean stats show we have a greater wealth divide than ever before. So all of this means that our politics is going to become much more visceral and much more emotional. Unfortunately I believe as a liberal, we have too many academics sitting around trying to theorize what could happen and creating campaigns that they would vote for and not looking at the actual situation on the ground. We mock Trump for speaking like a fourth grader but considering how bad people's ability to read and comprehend and these people work a lot of blue collar and Working Poor jobs, the Simplicity of the message works. I noticed this within my community and the change I'm trying to make with our educational district. I ask people what they think or how they feel about the school district and they'll say the school is messed up or the teachers ain't teaching right. But then because I have my fancy education and degrees, I am able to tease out ways to help them fully form out their thoughts on what their actual issues with the school district. And I think this is where we are at and where it will continue is that we're going to have to get more populist politicians who are more plain spoken unless fancy and much more direct than their language and their plans. I always felt the Democrats should have just had a simple message regarding inflation and economics and say Trump messed up we're cleaning it up. It would have been a lot simpler than trying to explain inflation and all that economics of everything but I don't know why they went with a simple message. I guess this also credits Trump for his marketing cunning. The man is like IQ level not smart but he has an incredible cunning and innate sense of marketing that you can teach or coach. He understands marketing and branding and the Simplicity of people's minds. People thought it was crazy that he stopped the covid checks to put his signature on it but even today there are people who still believe he sent that check to them. I hope the Democrats learned a lesson but we will see.
Forgive me when I say I don't believe you on your vote choice. Either you voted for Harris and you're terrified, or you're lying. Third party vote was very low this time around. Occam's Razor!
What i don't understand is how a national review republican can reconcile an FBI nomination for a man involved in a coup and who has promised to arrest journalists amongst other insanity. That is true lol nothing matters for anyone who cares about the constitution.
Just going to say that while I don't know Potowmack, he's been consistent on this since he's been posting here. It's hard to tell if people are telling the truth, so I can't say that what he posts is true, it is consistent with what he has been posting over the last several years. He claims to be a Republican who does not support Trump, and did not vote for Trump in 2020 or 2024. (I don't recall if he was posting in 2016 or if he's made any claims about how he voted in 2016). I believe he also claims to live in DC proper (as opposed to Northern Virginia or Maryland) so it's not like a vote for Trump would have changed the outcome in the electoral college. I also predict that he's going to say he doesn't give a crap about what you think of him, which is also consistent with what he has posted here in the past. I may not agree with him politically but at least he's been consistent in his posts - most of the other folks from outside the echo chamber who pop in here occasionally turn out to be full of ... contradictions. Or shit. Maybe they're full of shit.
I believe him. His views are fairly standard for anyone who spends a lot of time in the Bulwark ecosystem. The real issue is that there are too few Republicans like him who were prepared to maintain some kind of standards. If Judge Luttig posted here, I guarantee most would dislike his other views intensely.
Something that Denver Riggleman accurately predicted has now happened Namely QAnon has been centred in the MAGA party and Republican politics nationally. You can see this everywhere you look, but especially in Patel, Musk, Tulsi etc, deploying conspiracy theories as a form of political reppression. This is what happened to Riggleman specifically when he <checks notes> dared to marry gay friends at his own private property. He was attacked as a pedo and cast out. But of course a few years ago, most of this insanity was taking place only in state parties so it wasn't a big concern. But now we are going to see critical federal departments run on conspiracies as the basis for extensive purges - not much different to soviet / maoist tactics. it's likely that many "National Review Types" will champion this, because they will see it as a way of purging the supposed extreme liberal left - but of course many of the people who are going to get purged will be liberal republicans.
Yeah, just to put this into perspective for folks who aren't part of the legal community, prior to Mango, Luttig's conservative credentials were rock solid. Luttig, Sentelle, and maybe Silberman were the hardcore conservative judges of the 90s to early aughts---a clerkship with one of them guaranteed you a subsequent clerkship with Scalia, Thomas, or Rehnquist.
I've never been ashamed of my vote choice. I didn't vote at all in this election, because neither of these two candidates won me over. I would have voted for any other Republican, like Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis.
Just to clarify, I voted for Trump in 2020, but not 2016. I lived in DC at the time, so my vote was meaningless regardless. We live in Virginia now, though. 2020 was a weird time, and the only reason I voted for Trump was that I was concerned that a Democratic President would impose pandemic-related restrictions like we saw in places like Australia. Anyway, like I said, we lived in DC at the time so my vote was meaningless, either way.
I’ve been assured that my vote for Nader in 2000, in UTAH!!!!, was what ruined our country. But @soccernutter ‘s vote for him in Florida most definitely was!
Even if that all comes to pass they won't ever admit they were wrong. I think they can all endure a ridiculous decline in standard of living if the alternative is to acknowledge reality.
Well at the very least they are people who are very comfortable with policies that will harm millions of minorities. If you want to classify that as being "bad people" or not is a personal choice, I reckon.
Trump did better with a number of minority groups this time around than he did in either of the last two elections. Does your analysis apply to them, as well?
Unless there is a 180° change of direction between the current rhetoric and their actual policies, Trump II intends to unleash rather repressive policies on both immigrants and members of the LBGTQ community. What does the fact that Trump's coalition includes larger numbers of minorities than four years ago have to do with that?
Weissmann was laughing about this absurdity on Heilemann's show yesterday. The people Kash Patel wants to lock up include AG Bill Barr, Sec Def Mark Esper and CIA director Gina Haspel - all staunch republicans but apparently the deep state lol
I am not sure why posters are big mad with you. This is basically the same position as taken by many never trumpers including darlings of the movement like Kinzinger and Cheney - both of whom also voted for trump in '20
1) We've already agreed to disagree on a habitual voter skipping an election. 2) But you were wrong! The entire rationale for your vote choice was a lie! And you're okay with it? How any of the rest of you respect this decisionmaking... let's say my opinion wasn't high before.
Wasn't this election about the future of democracy? Sounders is literally fleeing the country. I think the least we could do is ask a Republican to hold their nose. If Dick ********en Cheney can do it, anyone can.
I'm not exactly what you'd call a habitual voter. Certainly not in these last three election cycles. And it's kind of pointless to relitigate pandemic era politics at this point. It's not like anyone is going to change their mind about things like lockdowns and vaccine mandates. I believe people like you fell for mass media-created hysteria, and you think people like me were callous and didn't care if grandma died. Not sure if there's any productive conversation to be had about any of it now.
