IMG_0554.JPG Amadeo Carizzo is considered by some the greatest goalkeeper Argentina produced. In this 1971 edition by El Grafico Carizzo picked his ideal River Plate of all time with his reasoning behind each selection.

Surprisingly some key players are left off, like Adolfo Pedernera. Di Stefano was chosen because he viewed him as the ideal centreforward for the squad. Even though Pedernera was a superior conductor and exquisite, and Walter Gomez was superior as a virtuoso and controller of the ball. But Alfredo was for 90 minutes a very consistent performer, a super athlete and for Carizzo better than Pelé.

Moreno was chosen for his inteligence, his athletic prowess, his temperament, he was the best header of the ball and he had it all. Technically he was perfect and he had a will that never would give up.

Labruna was chosen because he was the most cold finisher that was ideal for his team. And this despite him not getting along with him.

Mas was chosen over Loustau because he could play before and now he said. Once he was in front of goal it was a sure goal.

That's just a summary of some key figures.
