Its not so much the goals that impress me, it how well he links with the
midfield he has an excellent pass and touch on him and he seems so
confident at the moment both in finishing terms and assisting in team play.

Postiga and gomes have failed to contribute to the NT general play,
When scolari names the squad today it will be a crime if almeida is
    not included.

You definitely have a point here, but Scolari doesn't give anybody else a chance unless he's backed into a corner. He sticks with the old gaurd as long as he can. I think he trusts the experienced players more, actually. We'll find out tomorrow if Hugo's time has come. I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes, because Postiga has been injurred and Nuno Gomes has been so so. We'll see. I think he'll pick Gomes and Almeida, but I'm usually wrong.

Almeida has been by far our best striker the past months

Alot of goals and quite a few assists.

He's by far our best striker, no one comes close.

Hes not out of place on a high tempo midfield possesion and leathal breakout attack that bremen employs, and he has scored against some very top quality teams with superb defenders.

Scary thing is, one can say hes just getting good service, like those almeida haters, but the fact is, if he can put in bucket loads of goals and assists for bremen, imagine him for the ntl team with deco, quaresma, ronaldo, simao, maniche etc.

We cant expect him to score right away for the ntl team, and much like werder bremen, he needs to adapt and figure out the knacks and comman plays his teamates create and do.

Hes been called up along with Nuno Gomes and Postiga.

I believe Almeida in the air is wonderful, thats probably his best asset. But on the ground he is quite iffy in his finishing, and thats where the rest of the Seleccao usually prefers the ball.

Almeida is tall and we need the height up front. He was playing like crap for the past two seasons so I wouldn't want him on the NT but now he is definitely in form and looks like he will probably be a contributor now.

I think he will score on one of his first few attempts vs Belgium.

    If he starts....

I never doubt his ability in the air. But on the ground its dismissal.

yeah but so many of the crosses Portugal puts in, needs someone go get on the end of it with their head and that doesnt happan as often as it should

Almeida has the physical size he will give trouble to defenders. he deserves a chance.

with his finishing its just confidence, he is fantastic on the ground in terms of passing and holding the ball up.

He has missed some chances but he gest in those positions so regularly
which gomes and postiga have failed to do.

Nope, not at all consistently. Only 3 or 4 and highlights, and the U-21 game. That is the reason why I am trying to restrain myself from really taking shots at Almeida...

Its just the chances that he blew in the U-21 team were terrifying to say the least...

What do you prefer a player who puts themselves in positions to score
or a player who hides behind the defenders and not get any opportunities

    Re: Almeida scores again!!!!!!!

That depends. There a certain amount of players who may go invisable all game and then simply explode on scene for a goal.

Nuno Gomes always put himself and other in positions to score goals. He was epically good at getting to balls others were not capable of reaching, like his diving header.

    Re: Almeida scores again!!!!!!!

I think Almeida is not at all dismissable in terms of talent on the ground. His shot is typically very accurate given the amount of strength he puts behind his shots.

I think it's definitely debateable but near truth that Almeida has one of the strongest shots in the world just at the moment, his leg strength is insane.

I saw that game, too. He's usually better than that.

So who starts against Belgium? Nuno, Helder or Almeida?

Scolari will probably go with Postiga.

I love Nuno Gomes, but my choices right now would be...

    1) Hugo Almeida
    2) Gomes
    3) Postiga

Nope. He looked brutal against Sporting tonight. I wouldn't mind if Scolari gives Almeida a chance. If he looks out of place, bring on Nuno Gomes. Or just start Nuno Gomes. I don't think Postiga is playing well at the moment.

    Almeida It is Time

He has sored in his last 2 games. I think he just
needs somone to give him a long run in a side and
he will get the job done. He is what portugal needs.
A big striker that can hold the ball up for our slick
    attacking players.

He is also the only striker that is scoring at present so
that alone should make him the starting striker.

    your thoughts

Don't disagree. He looked very good against Espanyol in todays UEFA game. I still am no ecstatic that he is not able to use his right foot as freely as some of the players use their off-foot. Hopefully it comes with time. He is probably our fastest active senior striker though when compared to Postiga and Nuno. Doesn't go down as easy either.

EDIT: I merged the 2 Almeida threads together.

If he doesn't start that should be proof enough that Scolari suffers from a profound mental illness.
He is just what we need!

its time for him to play, at least come on as a sub in the next game.

Pauleta is gone, nuno gomes is going downhill, and postiga is disapointed lately.
