The original question was "how do they fit 46 games into such a short time?" If you're crossing off the weekends that are allocated to the FA Cup to get down to 37 weeks, you also need to cross off the weekends where no one is playing because of international breaks. Now we're at 46 games in 33 eligible weeks, which also changes your calculation about the frequency of midweek matches.
yeah the litany of injured americans that went to/played in that league is another reason i dont like it as a destination.....its a meat grinder in more ways than one
i always believed in him (unlike many in this thread who thought his career was over back in his germany/netherlands days) let this be a lesson to all of you who write off a player that struggles at first or even second or third clubs at a young age.....! (because that is definitely the norm from posters imo)
or maybe he can make it to the EPL one day? never know well i'm glad youre not usmnt coach this aged like milk how was it? this post is 8 years old and I stand by wright > sargent like I said!
Wright played 75' and scored the first goal in a 5-1 Coventry victory. Just two matches left before a well-deserved rest: Sun 4/26 v Wrexham (battling for the promotion playoffs) Sat 5/2 @ Watford
Really happy for Haji to make to the Prem. I remember when he scored his first goal for S04 in the Bundesliga. It was really exciting. Then I remember when it seemed like he might not make it professional football and was struggling to stay in the professional game going to a tiny club in Denmark. Pretty wild ride. I find Haji to be a highly frustrating player generally. Some really high highs and some brilliance but also has appeared to have an economy of effort at times (which is the frustrating part because its about effort) and disappears for stretches during games or season (happens to most all goal scorers). It's been interesting.
Totally agree but he scored that attractive against middlesboro and conventry hasn't looked back since.
I know there's two matches left but feels kinda subpar when the top scorer has only 21 while the 2nd top scorer (Haji) is at 17 goals. Big congrats though to Haji for being named to Team of the Season joining Sargent who won inclusion last season.
A bit surprising he's made the team of the year, but props to him. Looking at the stats, he's obviously up there for goals, goals per 90, xG and all of that, but no one really took the league by storm. The leagues leading scorer didn't even break a 7 rating average (per fotmob). Ando both he and Big Pat lead the league in big misses (20), which is more than his goals scored. Still, all in all, great story, very good player...it seems he's found his level, but we'll see next year. Very much looking forward to seeing him in the Prem. Hope he gets a nice pay bump!
The quicker he gets the first, the better. For the old timers, how have American strikers fared in the Premier League. Only McBride, Dempsey and EJ come to mind though there's got to have been more.
I remember Coventry City in the Premier League back in the late 90's. Mustapha Hadji was the man. Now there's a new Haji in town!
Roy Wegerle was the 3rd high scorer in the English First Division one season, though I don't think he was technically an American yet.
Joe Max Moore had 8 goals in 52 appearances(not sure how many minutes, starts...) And in reference to an older thread about the lack of opportunities in the US for smaller players, at 5'7", he was given a chance in the National team.
Size tends to be an issue at a younger age when the bigger players tend to stand out. It's not just a US problem. Shorter players have to work harder to get attention. However there are many examples of short world-class players, Messi and Madonna to name two. John Tolkin is a current American example.
Do I sense a thread title? I do. There's a new Haji in town! Haji Wright @ Coventry in the EPL What say you @bungadiri ?
20 league appearances, plus 1 FA Cup and 2 League Cup games in the 1994-95 season, scoring twice. He lost his place at the back end of the season under Ron Atkinson and went to Vasco da Gama for a few cups of coffee before joining MLS.
Wright started and played 71' in Coventry City's 3-1 victory over Wrexham. Wright exited at 1-1 - no goals/assists today. There's an extremely close race for the final promotion playoff spot with just one match remaining ... 6) 70 +4 Wrexham (home v Middlesbrough) 7) 70 +3 Hull City (home v Norwich City) 8) 69 +9 Derby County (home v Sheffield United)
He had a nice header that was unfortunately a good save by keeper. Also did well from left flank going end line and almost teed up teammate right in front of goal but it was blocked by defender
