First leg of the Allsvenskan qualifier is complete, and it's the Superettan side that draws first blood. Assyriska Föreningen downs Örgryte IS 2-1 in front of a standing-room only crowd of 5,242 at Bårsta IP in Södertälje. Paulinho Guará scored in the first half for Örgryte. Ivan Isakovic scored the first Assyriska goal early in the first half, with Kabba Samura getting the match-winner in the 51st minute. Return leg is Sunday afternoon at Nya Ullevi.

so close for Assyriska.... Örgryte just made the score 2-2 on agg. in the 91'st minute. I think this means that ÖSK stay up because of away goals. Kinda sad really, to do 180 minutes of hard work, and then have your dream of top flight football taken away in injury time.

    90+1:

Paulinho petar bollen i sidled strax utanför straffområdet till Gudmundsson som lyfter den inåt. Via en assyriskaförsvarare får bollen en båge som ställer Hellström och blir till en vacker lobb!

Yep, 2nd leg goes to Örgryte 1-0. Tie ends 2-2, Örgryte remains in the Allsvenskan on away goals. Tryggvi Gudmundsson getting the goal that saves Örgryte.

Now, there is a small glimmer of light for Assyriska. A licensing board is meeting on Monday, and there is a small chance that Örebro is going to be denied a license to play in the Allsvenskan next season. If that were to happen, then Assyriska would move up to fill the gap. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is, but that option is out there, as reported by Aftonbladet.

Örebro SK was today denied the license to play in Allsvenskan next season. Assyriska is going to take their place. Since I live in Örebro myself I think it is sad since I was looking forward to seeing Allsvenskan-football here. :(

They didn't have the financial strength to play in the allsvenskan.

    The quick and dirty version...

In 2002, the SFF decided that teams playing in the Allsvenskan had to obtain a "elite license", basically certifying that they had the financial ability to complete a season, at a relative level of competitiveness. According to the licensing board, Örebro has a "negative economic base" (read: debt) somewhere in the vicinity of 550,000 kronor (somewhere around $80,000). The licensing board also feels that the prospects of improvement are not there right now. So, Örebro is forceably relegated to the Superettan, with Assyriska taking their place in the Allsvenskan. Örebro does have 3 weeks to consider appeals to the licensing board, and even to the national court for sport.

In an opinion poll running right now on Aftonbladet.se, almost 70% of 13,000+ respondents feel that it is the right move to forceably relegate a team due to poor economic conditions. Meanwhile, 51,000+ respondents have replies to the poll: "Has Assyriska earned a place in the Allsvenskan?", with almost 55% of them answering "No". It doesn't take a genius to see the ulterior motive in this: If the spot went to the best relegated side in the Allsvenskan, instead of the best non-promoted Superettan side, AIK would be in the Allsvenskan again.
