Allawi Nominated As Transitional Iraqi PM

"BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi Governing Council on Friday chose one of its members, Iyad Allawi, a Shiite Muslim and former exiled opponent of Saddam Hussein to become prime minister in the new government taking power June 30."

    How long until this guy...

    A) Gets assasinated
    B) Steps down for family reasons
    C) has all of his Syrian connections discovered

    Pardon my scepticism

The Times is making it sound like Brahimi's personal choice, while Reuters (via Yahoo) says the UN was taken a bit by surprise.

Can't one important decision in Iraq be done by the diplomatic playbook ... like getting Brahimi, the Coalition Provisional Authority and the Iraqi National Congress to jointly announce who will be prime minister?
