From an idea by Russian Scouser in the Monaco thread. He suggested Sean Dundee post-injury, and my first contribution is... Jimmy Carter.
Er, who? Are you saying Xabi Alonso and Milan Baros are among the worst players the club have ever had? Your footballing knowledge is very suspect.
I think injuries kept Diomede from ever being able to show much to anyone...not that we ever had big ideas about him. In terms of amount of time allowed to play and expectations placed upon, let me be the first to throw the name of Diao in the hat. And let's not forget Rigobert Song.
All-time worst 11 El Hadj Diouf Erik Meijer Sean Dundee Salif Diao Bernard Diomede Bjorn Tore Kvarme David Thompson Dominic Matteo Abel Xavier Rigobert Song David James
Eh?? He's never gonna be on a "best XI" list, but how do you figure he's one of our worst of all time?? I don't get that at all...
How about just so to fill the XI quota Oh well, in terms of appearance & performance, he wasn't up to expectation, is that why he was sold?
David Thompson was a good squad player who did his job when he asked to do it. He was sold not because he was crap, but because Houllier was attempting to build a team that could compete with Europe's best. The sort of team that Thompson was probably never going to be on. But that certainly doesn't make him one of Liverpool's "all-time worst". EDIT - I can remember a couple of spectacular goals, too. Anyone remember that reverse nutmeg he perpetrated against Leeds (I think) before crossing it to Berger??
Thompson is a cracking little player. He was sold because he's a right scally and has a gob like the Wallasey Tunnel on him. Houllier was not big on such characters, as you may remember. Torben Piechnik and Istvan Kozma were probably as low as it gets. Perhaps Nicky Tanner and Paul Stewart too. Sean Dundee is a gimme. Oddly, they're all from the Nineties ... figures. Although there were plenty of players who were not good enough in the 1980's it wasn't that much of a blemish on them then. I mean, not getting into the 1988 side, for instance, is no kind of disgrace at all.
Let me try and decipher... A high energy player who was sold because he was a trouble maker and had a big mouth?
Yeah, that's about it. Thommo is actually a good little player - bags of energy, eye for a pass and he likes his tackles crunchy. I always thought he still had a role to play in the Liverpool squad, but his fondness for sharing his opinions with the world undermined his position.
I know a bloke whose father was Istvan Kozma's translater while at Dunfermline. Apparently he had to oversee the signing of his contract at Liverpool as well because he didn't have a clue what was going on. Oh and cheers for giving us £2 million for Paul Stewart it helped to finance some of Spurs all time great signings. Like Chris Armstrong.
