Thought it would be interesting to point this out. Look at how close the top three teams are. Costa Rica has now passed Mexico for second place, although that will probably be short lived. Mexico has played one fewer game and is likely to beat Trinidad, putting them ahead on goal difference. So, the way this looks, Costa Rica, Mexico and the US are the only teams to have played in every single hex so far, right? Since no other team comes close to the number of games played by those three teams.
Yes. Here are the other three teams in each Hexagonal: 1998: Canada, El Salvador, Jamaica 2002: Honduras, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago 2006: Guatemala, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago 2010: Honduras, El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago
Was that not evident even before this list was posted? I mean everyone and his dog knows that they are the most consistent and strongest teams in the area and have been for the past 20 years (or atleast the USA and Mexico have, Costa Rica as probably been on the same level for the past 10). Granted not everyone would admit it, but deep down everyone knows it.
What it means is that the three teams are most consistant...in the rounds leading up to the final. But an argument for Jamaica is that they missed the final round by one point in 2006, and by tie-breaker in 2010, so they are not that far off. Also, I added up the teams points in the group stages since 1990, to give the most consistant, by games (i.e. not by first place, second place, ...) over six cycles, for both the semi-final and final stages. Some notes, first: (1) the 1990 and 1994 tournaments used two-point wins. For these calculations, they were converted to three points. (2) a one-game playoff in 2002, ending in a score of Costa Rica 5-2 Guatemala, is included. (3) any inter-continental playoffs were not included (4) the formats were (a) a five-team final in 1990 (Mexico not participating; disqualified) with no group play before then, (b) an eight-team SF and four-team F in 1994 (USA not participating; host), (c) twelve-team SF's and six-team F in 1998-2010. In goals-scored, Mexico and Costa Rica are tied at 141 (the June 10 games are not yet included), and Mex had done it in four less games. The States are right there at 132. And Costa Rica has one more net win (even if it is the playoff). In goal-differential, only the four teams are positive, with Jamaica just at a -1 over 50 games.
You know, CONCACAF always gets bashed, and we do have a lot of tiny nations, but we really are on the verge of having about 10 solid programs. USA/Mex/CR are already there. Hondruas finally seem to be living up to their potential. I think the #5 CONMEBOL team could be in for a tussle. Beyond that, Jamaica, T&T, and El Salvador are all pretty solid. Guatemala is a tough place to play. Canada (especially getting MLS teams) is growing as a soccer nation, and Panama has also been consistent lately. That's 10 right there. Hopefully, Cuba opening up will improve things for them. Haiti have some talent, and I'd love to see a Suriname revival. Still, that's enough for a pretty solid Gold Cup. It would happen faster if Warner & his cronies didn't have sticky fingers with all the money.
I've always thought that if Cubans were allowed to play abroad and still represent their national team, they would have an awesome team. The few Cubans who have defected in the US have all been pretty good. Maykel Galindo, who plays for Chivas USA, and Osvaldo Alonso, with the Seattle Sounders, are two players who really stand out and who would bring a lot of extra experience if they were allowed to return to the national team. Anyway, interesting stuff, and like TrueCrew says, our Confederation has a lot of quality in it, and would probably be better if Warner and his cronies weren't running the show.
Sorry, the 141 and 132 numbers are total points, not goals. Was looking at the wrong column. Plus, something that stood out, was the 24 games played for St.V+G. They actually made the semi-final round four times in the last five cycles.
Do you have the home/away stats, it could help us have a better idea of the probable ending of this hex. (maybe add % wins in away matches and % of loses in home matches)?
It has been always evident for me, but some Honduras think they are the 3rd best team in concacaf, havent you seen them around here?
Well I think its fair to say every country has their cocky fans. All I know is that its not unrealistic to say Honduras is fourth best. Honduras has never gotten to Costa Rica's level, but we are not horribly far off. Once again, it is super clear who the top 3 teams are.. sometimes my fellow fans need to wake up and look at the facts.
believe me that if your fellow H fans think like you, i wouldn't say things like that, but you seem to be a exception to the rule
Of course, you probably realize that an away win is a home loss.... We did some of this analysis in 2006 (2005) in "The 6 and 9 guide to WCQ" https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=168607 To add in the 2006 (and 1990) stats, the home team in the final round is 66 wins, 25 losses, and 29 draws. By points, it is 227 for home teams and 104 for road teams, or 1.8917 and 0.8667 points per game. This value got slanted way toward the home team, by a snazzy record of 20-6-4 (w-l-t) for home sides in the 2006 hex. Code: year home road draw Hpts Rpts 2006 20 6 4 64 22 2002 14 10 6 48 36 1998 15 2 13 58 19 1994 8 3 1 25 10 1990 9 4 5 32 17 Total 66 25 29 227 104 So to find the value according to the baseline, take the number of points in the standard 3-1-0 system, and subtract 1.8917 for each home game (no matter the result) and substract 0.8667 for each road game. A result of zero would then be average (basically, the line between third and fourth place). So, the scaled values are: Code: Team Pts Home Road Scale Costa Rica 12 3 2 4.59 USA 10 3 2 2.59 Honduras 7 2 3 0.62 Mexico 6 2 3 -0.38 El Salvador 5 3 2 -2.41 Trin / Tob 2 2 3 -4.38 Totals 42 15 15 0.63
