I missed the Eighties because I was too busy having babies. I had no idea what a Goonies was, and finally I watched the movie this week. I didn't even know it was a Spielberg movie. It's not too bad. While "Goonies never say die" means the quakes never give up, I think the true analogy is the way the team keeps avoiding certain annihilation. Anyhow, maybe our new chant should just be GOONIES GOONIES GOONIES. As long as It doesn't sound like Go Nats...
I think Goonies is a direct rip off of arsenals "gooners" or a rip off of "gunners" one or the other. and i also think its ripped off Arsenal because arsenal is always a late game winning team. my two cents, i hate the name and its almost childish in my opinion.
look up the word "goon" Then watch the movie. Try to remember there was a world before 1990. $0.02 is a rip-off
Just to clarify : Steven Spielberg was the executive producer of the movie. Richard Donner was the director and one of the producers. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
It's not a rip off from Arsenal. Not even a little. It's from an '80s movie. It was quoted by Lenhart after the Quakes turned a 0-2 score into a 3-2 win down in LA. http://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/2012/05/lenhart-goonies-never-say-die Quakes fans aren't a bunch of Euro-snob wannabes. Save that claim for TFC fans.
FYI, my son is 29, and I probably had to watch that movie (along with the various Karate Kids and Stand by Me) at least two or three times a week during the late 80s/early 90s. futurequakeskeeper's insight is fully as faulty as his spelling and grammar...
Nice sentiment but ... https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/...ostgame-thread-r.1972590/page-3#post-26250573 BTW - When does fqk have to change his name? Seems like he's missed his widow to make the team.
Stand by me... Forgot about that one. Will have to see if my kids like it. (I'm ashamed to admit they don't like Goonies )
I think that link stamps the Goonie loving crowd as NOT being wannabes, . Keepers are good into their late 30s so FQK has plenty of time to grow up and make the team.
Wow that is some foot-in-mouth disease. You should really get that checked out. I laughed out loud reading this. Sticking with the goonies theme, I think the next time Lenny scores, Frank is required to do the truffle shuffle.
He just needs to add "grounds" between "quakes" and "keeper" and then apply for a job with the divot replacing crew.
Still don't really know what a Goonie is but whatever it means, our Quakes surely make the best Goonies ever!
I my book, a Goonie is one who is perceived to be below average, knows it, but fights the perception and achieves above average results...
You do realize that when I have time to come on here its normally 3-6 in the morning? Or maybe you just don't realize I live on the other side of the U.S so when you are awake at 11 PM it is 3 hours ahead here. It's called being tired and NOT caring about your spelling. On the base of being past my prime, actually a keepers prime is in his late 20's, so being 21 all I would need is a year to get back into fitness and bam, I could very well still be the futurequakekeeper On the subject of goonies, I still think it is a direct arsenal rip off, and I don't like it. And yes I know the definition of "goon" And we don't quite "terrorize" or act in a "thug" way. We have one good season and we instantly stick that motif to our selves like we are a force to be reckoned with. Maybe in about 5 years if we continue to be a dominating team, then MAYBE we can add such a silly name to our selves. But on the base of originality, it's stupid. Club nicknames should be made by the FANS, not the players. Just because Lenhart says we are like the goonies or what have you does not mean it should be the club nickname or anything. May I suggest the ultras come up with a song for the quakes to chant out, instead of "ole ole ole ole olah" or some rubbish. Because then a nickname will sprout up FROM the fans...not the players, because how stupid would it be to call our selves the "goonies" after a player says it, and then the next season that said player leaves and that name has stuck. It is ridiculous in my personal opinion. And to say that making a song(s) for the club would be euro snobbing, first it isn't and second even if it ends up being snobbish...so what? it sounds good. Every great club has songs/chants for the club...MLS however, I hear the same chants for every team...lets get rid of this stupid goonies crap, and leave the old chants behind, and become a great club with some original tradition, who knows...maybe we can get a better nickname out of it. /rant.
The name Goonies is derived from the fictional Astoria, Oregon neighborhood known as the "goon docks". The Goonies were the group of friends who refused to give up and allow rich developers to foreclose on their neighborhood. This comparison runs deeper that never saying die. These Quakes are trying to prevent the DP rich squads from taking the MLS Cup and Supporters Shield. Hopefully the Quakes season ends like the movie and they win the Cup and Shield and maybe some pirate treasure while they are at it. Just for fun who do you think each character would be on the Quakes/MLS...here is my shot at it. Mikey=Wondo Mouth=Lenhart Data=Chavez Chunk=??? Brandon=Bernardez Ma Fratelli= Beckham Francis Fratelli=Donovan Jake Fratelli=??? Sloth Fratelli=???
Why do we need a nickname? We already have one. Earthquakes. The rest of the world don't have names like San jose Earthquakes and shit like that, they have shit like CD Guadalajara or Manchester United, names that just say the city and then given nicknames like Chivas or red devils. Since we already have a nickname in the name we don't need one. You don't see that in any American sports because all our teams ARE nicknames.
Wow, I didn't know our Quakes had so many sticks in the mud for fans. Goonies has NOTHING to do with Arsenal football. NOTHING. It has to do with a beloved movie from the 80's . It's $5 at Walmart. Go buy it. It was referenced by a player in a postgame comment and fans are running with it. As for fans adopting team nicknames and not players, looking in my fan's handbook and I'm not seeing that rule...still looking...And the fans agreed with Lenhart's postgame comment and are ADOPTING it to represent this crazy season where making it into the playoffs would have been considered an achievement with this roster and instead our team is excelling and leading the league! This team has found the pirate's treasure! And proud smurf has it right...the Quakes were called that in a derogatory way by LA Scum and we the fans adopted it to stick it back in their face. See my avatar and proud smurfs.
Samwise gives a great speech about how Goonies never say die. Take what he says and put the Quakes history into it and that is why Quakes never say die. You can treat our team like a redheaded stepchild. Quakes fans never say die. You can take our team and move it to Texas. Quakes fans never say die. Bring it back on the cheap and put it into Porta-Potty Stadium. Quakes fans never say die. Never leave Buck Shaw before the game is over; cause the Goonies on the field never say die.
