Ted McMinn is now going to have his leg amputated below the knee! I just want to wish him all the best! One of the entertainers!

"Former Derby County winger Ted McMinn has made the decision to have his right leg amputated beneath the knee, following lengthy talks with doctors.

The 42-year-old had to have part of his right foot removed early in August because of a mystery infection, as earlier reported in the Evening Telegraph.

That left him with a stump at his heel and on crutches, but doctors have told him that by having the rest of the leg amputated beneath the knee and an artificial limb put in place, he could eventually ditch the crutches.

Mr McMinn, who had insisted he would not lose the limb unless he had to, said the possibility of walking unaided again persuaded him to follow the medics' advice.

He said: "I went back to hospital and the specialist asked if I'd thought any more about getting more amputated.

"To make it more comfortable for me and so I might one day be able to walk without the crutches, I told him I'd decided I was going to go ahead with another operation.

"It was a very hard decision to make. Cutting a limb off that doesn't need to be cut off seems crazy, but it will help me.

"When this first happened, I thought if I can get back to 50 per cent normal then I would be happy. With this operation, I will be able to get back to 90 per cent normal."

Mr McMinn first felt a pain in his foot on Friday, July 22. He was told by doctors that the bones had flaked so badly as a result of the infection that they could not be saved.

The Scot has been on 40 tablets a day in a bid to keep the infection at bay. He faced the possibility of losing the limb anyway if the infection had spread.

However, doctors believe they now have the infection under control.

He will return to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary on Tuesday when, hopefully, he may be told he can stop taking his antibiotics and be given a date for the operation.

"I just want to get it done as quickly as possible. I'll have a better standard of life and, now I've made my decision, I just want to get on with it."

Mr McMinn, of Aston-on-Trent, was a crowd favourite at the Baseball Ground, making more than 150 appearances for the Rams between 1988 and 1993.

He was voted Rams Player of the Year in the 1991-92 season, when the club narrowly missed promotion after finishing third in the old Second Division, but losing to Blackburn Rovers in the play-offs."

Good luck to the guy, awful thing to happen and I hope it all works out for him.

Makes you think though...do nicknames end up becoming reality?

Keep a look out for stories about Davie Dodds growing a 'trunk'.. :D

Best of luck to Ted. He was a great player to watch, though I'm sure he confused himself as much as the opposition defenders with some of his mazy runs.
