Donovan leads All-Star fan balloting (Above is the link to the the MLSnet article updating fan voting.) Our only player near the top is the 5th ranked striker from the eastern conf.: TnT (Mr. 1 goal) Granted the season has been a disappointment thus far, I think we do need to get at least a couple players onto this team... If you notice, Jon Busch is currently the #3 Eastern GK... surely Brown is a better selection. Also... our own rookie sensation Clint Dempsey deserves a nod in my book. ... Hopefully we (the Rev's faithful) will get out on push for some of our players to make the team... (online voting takes place on the MLSnet website)
Busch has actually been quite good this year. I think Brown is a better keeper, but you can't put him on the team given the year he has had so far. -- The only guy on the team that deserves an all-star spot at this point is Dempsey. Joseph will if he can get healthy and get enough games in. Otherwise, who are you going to pick from our team? It's been a tough year. Lee
It would be a shame to see Adu and Moreno get in and not Dempsey. Dempsey has scored more goals then both of those guys and has been a better rookie then Adu. The other thread on this board (Demps....) seems to have the same feeling of our beloved Demps for fans across the league.
Why do we need this, if we don't have anyone that deserves to go? A case could be made for Dempsey. But as Soccer Doc says, we might be better off with everyone getting some mid-season R&R and then getting ready for games that count that follow.
but the all-star game isn't about recognizing team success, it recognizes individual players, and like most people are saying Dempsey and Joseph pre-injury are probably the best bets for the REVS of getting players in the game. Noonan does lead the team in points though. It'll be interesting to see what happens since fan voting only makes up 25% of the selection. I'm sure the Revs will have at least one player selected.
I've voted a couple of times, and the only Rev I've voted for is Dempsey. Even after his brutal tackle on Gilberto, which looked more like a bad case of misjudged timing than anything with intent. As someone else noted, Jon Busch has had a great year so far, single-handedly keeping Columbus in games. No way does Adu deserve a sniff at this game, but we all know he'll be in it. Be thankful. At least your top rookie is on the ballot. Jeff Parke is a RoY candidate and he's not even on there. That being said, there are a number of rookies that could make a case for being on the AS team at this point, and many of them were late draft picks. Dempsey, Parke and Josh Gros over in DC (my current short-list for Rookie of the Year) are all having spectacular seasons. Has this been one of the strongest rookie crops in recent memory, or is it just the top few making waves?
I think only Pat Noonan and Clint Dempsey deserve a spot. Brown and Joesoph have played like all-stars, but they've missed too many games.
IMHO, the only Revs with a true legit claim would be Dempsey IMHO. Joseph's had a good season, but Dempsey has played and succeeded in defense, in midfield, and now at forward. Hell, give him a few sessions with Vanole, and maybe we'll have a 3rd string keeper of note ;-)
Ah, Dempsey in goal....creating a whole new generation of MLS "whiner" forwards! There's no doubt he could make Razov cry... Brian
Going by stats, Noonan and Ralph lead the east in scoring at the forward posistion (not counting midfielder Amado Guevara). I'd like to see a strike partnership of Ralph and Noonan in the all-star. They seem to me like forwards whose styles would complement each other well.
The only all-star worthy performers would be the trainers , medical staff and Mrs. Brian Kamler. Without these folks, we would be fielding an assortment of RI StingRays, Cape Cod Crusaders & NH Phantoms as our MLS team.
In what must be the most ridiculous hype of the season, Brad Feldman was pushing Taylor Twellman for the all-star game near the conclusion of tonight's match. Earth to Brad: He has 1 goal and spent much of the season injured! He is not in any way, shape or form an all-star this season. There is nothing wrong with pushing Dempsey's legitimate case, but Twellman hasn't been on the field enough, or produced enough when he was this season to merit any consideration.
In fairness to Astronaut Brad, he did say that it was based on his performance over the past couple of seasons. I agree with you, though, that that is not reason enough for selection. On the other hand, how does a post-all-star great second half of the season performance get rewarded? Face it, these things are old boy network popularity contests. Freddy Adu has no right being there, but you know he will be. Heck, I'm sure they'll find some way to get Preki there. The bottom line is that I truly hope that the token Rev who gets selected sits on the bench and doesn't get too bothered about having to spend his week off in DC. All-star games, if they must be played at all MUST be after the MLS Cup so no one risks injury.
OK, who's the idiot who said that? The starters have been announced and Eddie Gaven is (for the moment) the youngest player ever selected for an MLS All-star game. Perhaps it will stay that way unless Freddy becomes the commissioner's pick So far, so good, no Rev in the first XI. Six reserves for each side and Commissioner's Pick for each side remain. I expect that there will be a token Rev in that bunch since it is one of those jello rules that all the teams must be represented. Whoever it is...DON'T GET HURT! Maybe it could be Reis of Brown, keepers in those games aren't expected to move anyway.
Brown has a keeper named Reis? Mousey, I'm glad to see someone is posting something on ther Revs board. But on the other hand ...
Have you looked at the keyboard lately? F is too close to R don't you think? Anyway, if a Brown keeper can represent the Revs and keep all our non-injured players off the field then I'l all for it. Shouldn't there be a petition somewhere I could sign calling for the end of mid-season all-star games?
Actually, I think it's really all about selling tickets and getting TV ratings for the game. If the commish has a pick, expect Freddy - and expect him to see more p.t. than he gets from Nowak. I know I'll cringe at the selection, but at this point in MLS history, better to give the star-followers their boy.
"In what must be the most ridiculous hype of the season, Brad Feldman was pushing Taylor Twellman for the all-star game near the conclusion of tonight's match..." Great, now go to the chalkboard and write the following 50 times: Brad Feldman gets paid to do this... Brad Feldman gets paid to do this... Brad Feldman gets paid to do this... Brad Feldman gets paid to do this... Brad Feldman gets paid to do this... Brad Feldman gets paid to do this... Who cares about the All-Star game anyway, at least this season's version. The Magpie
Well, he rattled off suggestions to vote for about a half-dozen Rev players, some potentially deserving, and others not. Then he must have realized how silly he sounded, and quipped that there are a couple of decent players on some of the other teams too. Basically, who cares. Let Dempsey go and play a half, get some visibility, but not anything close to an injury. The rest of the boys can sit at home and watch Clint on the TV and rest up for the big game vs the Cows on August 7. Tom
Looks like Dempsey will certainly get his time off the bench... as well Noonan. I was trying to figure out the Noonan selection, and i figured his goals must be the reason. Then I heard that they needed an All-Star who can shoot souvenir balls into the upper decks of the stadium (during the run of play no less!)!!! Adu, Dempsey named as reserves
