So according to mlsnet.com, this year the MLS All-Stars will "take on a prestigious international club to be announced on June 11 at The Home Depot Center." The game is on August 2...isn't that at the end of the ManU tour? Anyone think we can hope to see MLS v. Man U? Timmy's final hurrah (he could play both sides)
Maybe that will be one of the provisions in the transfer of howard to ManU, that they play the mls allstars.
Not likely to be ManU -- they play the next day in Phily and 2 days before in New Jersey. We have ManU, Juve, Celtic, etc. coming to the US. Here's the schedule of these European teams... 7/22 ManU v. Celtic, Seattle 7/23 DC United v. Blackburn, Washington DC 7/25 Celtic v. AC Milan, Cleveland 7/27 ManU v. Club America, Los Angeles 7/27 Barcelona v. Juventus, Foxboro 7/31 ManU v. Juventus, Giants Stadium 8/03 Barcelona v. ManU, Philadelphia I'd say the fact that Barca & ManU play in Phily the day after the All Star Game pretty much eliminates them. Juventus plays 2 days before the ASG, so that's not the best scheduling for them either. That leaves Celtic, Blackburn, AC Milan and Club America that would be in country about that time. Blackburn with Big Brad between the posts would be a GREAT choice for the All Star Game. Will Brad be ready to play by then? CL Champions AC Milan would be cool too.
Blackburn might not be 'big enough,' certainly in the ratings department, but who knows. Milan would be real good but maybe a little boring. Honestly, the only two clubs on the face of the earth that can bring in any good ratings for this game are Man U and Real, with the latter slightly worse off than the former because of Beckham. I'd put Arsenal, Milan, Juve, Liverpool, Barcelona, and perhaps Inter and Celtic in a tier below that.
I've already said this on another thread about this match, but I'll repeat it here. Why is this going to be held in a small stadium? This demands a big house. This is Broadway, not summer-stock. How come the new "soccer-only" stadiums you build here are tiny. 30,000 capacity stinks. It's an indication that none of you believe the sport will really become popular. Hold this match were it belongs. Try Giants Stadium with 80,000 seats, not a ****ing shoebox in La-La Land.
When do tickets go on sale? This is the one game I am planning a trip for, now if it is against a big name team it is going to make it even harder for me to get tickets.
That would be nice, actually...show those Eurosnobs that the runts of the football world can hold their own against Europe's top club.
metrocorazon, do you realize that every time you post the link shows up twice on BS Live? just thought i'd mention it

That's going to be tough, as AC Milan is finalizing a game with Barcelona at FedEx Field (home of the Washington Redskins) on July 30th. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A55810-2003May29.html It's possible that it'd be Milan, and I'd love to see MLS kick some UEFA Champion azz, but I just don't see it happening. Celtic is the lone "big name" left. I'm betting it's Blackburn Rovers though. While they have won the Premiership before, and they did qualify for a UEFA spot, I wouldn't really call them particularly "prestigous." It would be great to have Friedel bring his team to our All-Star Game, and they are already playing DC United this year, but I still consider Blackburn a notch below Celtic. Coming from a Rangers fan, that's tough to admit. -Digital
