Last year's MLS all-star game was a US-World format, like this year's WUSA all-star game. Yet, MLS's game in 02 had the Americans in their US Soccer game jerseys. WUSA's did not. Aside from all trolling regarding Julie Foudy, was this a calculated risk of not only having the American stars wearing the special WUSA kit, separating themselves from USSF endorsement? And how does this compare to the 1998 ASG where the Americans wore a knockoff Reebok kit?
The difference was that the 2002 MLS All-Star game was, in theory, the US National Team (including many former national teamers given that the Euros could not attend) v. everyone else, including Americans who did not play for the Nats. In 1998, there was an MLS US v. MLS World. It was not the national team, and the US players wore a different jersey.
I think Anthony hit the nail on the head. The WUSA U.S. All-Stars team was not our national team. It was merely a group of WUSA players who are Americans. Because they aren't the National Team, I think it would have been really wrong for them to wear the national kits.
