Right now he's the best in the world. Even with all his acts. Mbappe is maybe 5 spots below, if not more.
So wait, in one thread Haaland having scored 40 goals or so already is the best in the world, in this one it's Vinicius. Which thread is correct? If the best player in the sport right now is Vinicius, you can argue that we're not exactly having the greatest moment of individual quality in the game. And I do think he should be rewarded come award season. I just don't see him being a difference makes like past exceptional players.
Unlike some of the exceptional players from the recent past (who were statpadding against minnows and often ghosting in big matches), Vinicius actually makes the difference in big matches with his individual quality.
Man spare me that. We're not going "penaldo" on another player after we were all in on volume for years.
I remember when we had already lost the title and Ronaldo was out there doing full field sprints VS relegated teams at the 89th minute with us feeling him the ball to score more goals and win the golden boot and justify some Ballon d'Or campaign.
As a fan, I subscribe. More of that please. If I'm a fan paying for a ticket, I expect goals and effort. And there was never a lack of that with Ronaldo, regardless if he did it for some "Ballon D'Or campaign" or not, or if he was playing in a CL final or pre season friendly.
No need to discredit Cristiano after the fact. As far as I'm concerned, he showed up when it mattered most and when it 'did not matter' (whatever that means, I enjoyed those games tbh, it was fun). Re Vini: he also shows up in big games, love him!
He played mostly for himself which is why his club career went on a long ruderless ride to nowhere after he left Madrid. Can't drive a car while looking at yourself in the mirror instead of where you're heading to.
Ok, I get that you don't like him But to say his career was trash as soon as he left Real Madrid is revisionism. Serie A winner with Juve 18/19 & 21/20 Italian Cup winner 20/21 Italian Supercup winner 18/19 & 20/21 Golden Boot winner 18/19 UEFA Nations League winner 2019 Top scorer in all UEFA competitions in 2019 Top scorer in Euro 2020 Top scorer in Serie A 20/21 Footballer of the year 2019 & 2020 in Serie A 101 goals in 134 games & 22 assists for Juve All this while he was 34, 35 and 36 years old. Comparing that to 99.9% of careers out there, I wouldn't exactly call that a "long rudderless ride to nowhere". Sure, I think he made a mistake to leave Madrid in 2018, but that doesn't mean his career all of a sudden turned to utter crap over night. Besides, I don't see how "playing for himself" is any different than any other professional footballer.
Because there is no dominance like Messi and CR7 had for the past 15 years, I think people are getting confused. The two best players were very clear and you had your preference. Now, there are about 10 players who are all equivalent imo. Vini, Haaland, Mbappe, Yamal, Jude, Rodrigo, Saliba, Courtois, etc are all the very best. We know defenders and holding mids won't get the BdO so I'm not counting them. The BdO comes down then to whomever of these elite players had the best year both in terms of contribution and trophies. Clearly, it's Vini this year. Jude had an argument but the Euro killed him (like Mbappe who had to win the Euro and play well in it). But in my mind, there no longer exists a "best player in the world". Nobody stands out at the moment.
Those records are sweet and wonderful but Madrid was the better team for every single day since he left compared to who he was playing.
