One of the more experienced refs (only Hall did more games last year) http://dcunited.mlsnet.com/MLS/news...tent_id=2902&vkey=news_dcu&fext=.jsp&team=dcu Games involving United: P14 W4 L9 T1; FC/gm: 31.9; Y/gm: 3.4; R: 0; pens: 5 Games involving Galaxy: P19 W8 L6 T5; FC/gm: 28.6; Y/gm: 3.8; R: 3; pens: 7 Prus did 5 United games last year: 6/28 @ CLB: 3 Yellows (Hejduk, Dunseth, Convey). 7/19 v SJ: 4 Yellows (Petke, Barclay, Waibel, Mullan). 8/16 @ CHI: 2 Yellows (Ivanov, Stoitchkov), 2 PKs. 9/25 @ MET: 4 Yellows (Guevara, Stewart, Prideaux, Kovalenko), questionable PK called on Dema (Mathis missed it anyway) 10/25 v KC: 5 Yellows (Prideaux, Nelsen, Stoitchkov, Talley, Zotinca) This year he did the game against the Metros. Not a bad job, except for not calling the grab on Namoff which set up the Metros second goal.
Re: Alex Prus :: DC United v. LA Galaxy Official Referee Thread [R] He may be the fugliest ref in MLS, and I recall us wanting his head on a stick last year at some point. Or maybe that was just GrillMaster....
Re: Alex Prus :: DC United v. LA Galaxy Official Referee Thread [R] No way okulaja is sooooo much uglier.
Re: Alex Prus :: DC United v. LA Galaxy Official Referee Thread [R] With all due respect is there any Ref in MLS that we have never wanted their head in a stick
Re: Alex Prus :: DC United v. LA Galaxy Official Referee Thread [R] Here's a link to his last DC United match: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106210 And in case you've missed it I started up an index for all these threads. That's here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110167
Re: Alex Prus :: DC United v. LA Galaxy Official Referee Thread [R] This guy is a catastrophe waiting to happen to DC. He has an uncanny knack of missing (overlooking?) bad fouls, then showing yellow cards for minor infractions. I don't have a good feeling about this at all.
Re: Alex Prus :: DC United v. LA Galaxy Official Referee Thread [R] After seeing what Vaughn did to us after indirectly complimenting him, I have nothing good to say about any MLS ref unitl its time to reverse the polarity. Play-on Prus is maddeningly tolerant of boys-will-be-boys in the first half, but whoa nellie (horse reference, btw), once the seal is broken on the yellow card he lubricates his pocket so the friction on the material from the card won't put a cinder in de keister. GM
I think this ref is not doing a bad job tonight. He's even given the benefit of the doubt to DC on occasion. That Velenzuela dude is the worst though....
Re: Alex Prus :: DC United v. LA Galaxy Official Referee Thread [R] I liked the way this ref called the game. There were guys diving out there a few times and he wouldn't have any of it. I like that kind of ref. He had control of the game. I thought the yellows he gave were reasonable and weren't argued against heavily. I'd like to see him ref another DC game. He did miss a call or 2, but I mean come on we shouldn't expect perfection from any ref. Nothing major was missed.
The only call I had a problem with was the yellow on Cobi. In game one a somewhat similar foul was a red. The problem is consistency.
The push in the back by Albright on Namoff in the first half. Same that got Brandon a PK. Not called by Prus. CONSISTANCY. DC was pushed in the back 3 times with no calls. There were a couple of ticky-tack (Gros late, something in the near DC offensive corner in the second) calls that were sketchy, but on review, the Dema offsides and Stewart penalty appeals were correctly judged. It's a shame they don't show the replays on the big screen. What are we going to do there? And is that any worse than what we already do (the incessant F-you Ref chants, the smoke & fireworks, the TP missles from the Northside...) Thx, Jay!
Certainly he didn't cause any of the goals this time, which is an improvement over the last DCU game he did. But his calls and non-calls are pretty mystifying. It's like no one had any idea what was a foul and what wasn't. If I were playing in a game with a referee like that I would be very frustrated. There were some dives which he rightly ignored. But there were also many legit fouls that he didn't call and made a big show of waving at the players to get up.
Prus is known as a 'Let them play' kind of ref, and he lived up to that rep last night. I'd have called a few more fouls (particularly on the Galaxy ) but I had no major issues with the refereeing.
There is one major issue with his refereeing, consistency. If an LA player runs through the back of a DC player and it's not a foul, then when a DC player does the same thing it should not be a foul. Unfortunately he was very random in calling what looked like a similar foul. Sometimes he would sometimes he wouldn't. I think that if you asked players what their bigget complaint about refs is it would be that they're not consistent in calling the fouls during a game. This is the biggest problem with refs and Prus is one of the worst offenders.
Agreed. It was not so much that the calls were one sided it was that they were all over the place. He use of cards tonight was ineffective and at times a little random.
I watched the replay of the match last night on HDNet after returning from the match. My opinion is that Prus and his team were stellar. That was the best reffing performance of the year thus far. Was it perfect? Hardly, but I don't expect that. Overall, they got all the controversial calls right and generally let the game flow otherwise. Cheers, Tim
I find I can assess refereeing much more impartially when I'm not watching the game live. In fact, I don't know if I really enjoy watching games live. I develop ulcers and don't breathe a whole lot. Pathetic, no? I agree that Prus has a problem with consistency, but I'm not sure that problem isn't shared by most referees everywhere. As a side note, Collina remains the best ref I have seen in years. It's cool that his reputation is so good that even when he makes a questionable call the players involved just walk away because "he's gotta be right." That happened in the UEFA Cup final yesterday.
I thought Prus & Co. did an exceptional job last night. I liked his "let 'em play" attitude and he didn't fall for false theatrics. His foul call/Cobi card thing was not something I think not many refs could handle. He wasn't perfect, but it's impossible to be so, but he did what a good ref should, remain largely invisible and let the players decide the game. Unfortunately for us he let the players decide the game.
I actually thought he wasn't too bad last night. True he was inconsistant (letting some bigger things go while calling some minor things), but he was inconsistent to both sides and he didn't influence the outcome of the match. I guess mediocre is superior to piss-poor.
I liked how he applied the advantage rule last night. He waited to see if an advantage developed, and if it didn't, he'd bring back the play for a free kick. Nice to see in MLS.
Ugly? Pierluigi Collina is much uglier. The ref's were fine last night after I watched the CNS and the HDNet. This ref doesn't call a lot of soft dives. I like that. . See what the Farkers did to him here. Some brilliant stuff. Enjoy
One question maybe someone can answer. After the first goal the linesman raised his flag straight up and stood there momentarily. Is this the norm for noting a goal.
