The news is in Italian, but it basically says that Nesta is going to leave AC Milan after the end of this season to play for NY Red Bulls. http://sport.virgilio.it/notizie/sp...nto_negli_usa_si_giocava_a_2_00,34806381.html
3 weeks ago I would have been okay with the move. But now?? HELL NO. Ruthven has came along quite nicely and has become a rock in the back. The Hulk has stepped up his game and Conde should be ready soon. I also read some other articles and it says its not official. I'll be cool if it's for a affordable price but not for a DP slot..
Anyone else thinking the arrival of Nesta could mean the end of Conde? Soler said outright they knew he was a risk, and I can't imagine Backe wanting to move Holgersson to the bench, could they be cutting their losses and banking on Nesta staying healthier than Conde has?
I think this is an absolutely terrible move, but hope I'm wrong. This could be close to as bad as the Marquez signing.
This is what I have about Nesta. "Aftert the farewell to Ac Milan, Alessandro Nesta is ready to move to USA and as announced before by TMW Editor, Michele Criscitiello, the destination is New York. "Nesta will earn 1 million euros every season for 2 years. He'll have bonuses, but not an option for the third year, then he will quit football. He will sign the deal the 8th June, when Nesta will move to New York".
Nesta just played in the Milan derby...he still has it. I just hope that they know not to play him every week. Every three weeks or so.
Sure the D has played good the last three games and we got three great results. However look at how the teams we have beat during this stretch have been performing. To think that the D is all fixed and good now would be foolish. Nesta is a good signing. He wont embarrass himself like Marquez.
Yea, I don't think he will either since he seems like he has a good character but I don't like the move as our defense has been playing good and we have Conde who's coming off injury. I really want to see more of Tyler Ruthven as I think he can be the real deal at CB for us..
He is still a good defender and I'm sure would do great in the MLS but how much longer can he really play? I mean 2 or 3 more years? I can't see him playing beyond that.
Playing at Milan he have something to prove, but if he come to RBNY he like Marquez with a guaranty contract to play until retirement they have nothing to prove, they practically are retired...
Seriously, speaking strictly from the standpoint of an Italian-American who worked and lived in Italy, I'd love to see more Italian players make their way to the MLS but not at 36 years of age. If I were in the MLS or NYRB offices, I wouldn't sign anymore of these over 35's.......its getting to be in the eyes of the world, kind of a joke and a retirement league at best. I've always loved and respected older players and love the experience they bring but I think the league and teams should start signing more over 25's or even 30, 31 & 32 year old players as opposed to the over 35's, especially since they probably cost about the same amount of money and will last longer....
How did I set it low? Marquez is an embarrassment. Nesta is one of the top to play his position. Granted he is old but he is still playing at a high level. He wont come here and ruin his reputation. Like I said he is a good signing.
Everything I read is like above, two years and he is retired. Nothing wrong with bringing in an older guy here and there. Id like to see players come here at a younger age but don't see it happening for awhile. Competition and pay is better in other leagues. Any young stud is going to leave MLS for bigger things. Basically you get the something a guy for a few seasons be it a young stud or an older vet. I would like to see some young South Americans but we are stuck on mostly European imports.
I'm sure Nesta can still play as he was voted man of the match just a few weeks ago . Here was his players rating in the first game vs Barca and against Atalanta last week..... . There is no questioning Nesta as a great player and that he can't play well or be a force in the MLS and I do look forward to seeing him. Still I just wish the MLS could import better younger players maybe with less of a name who can contribute a lot more and will stay around longer or maybe younger ones that could be sold for a profit as opposed to retirement, possibly following the Udinese model. That would be a much wiser approach of philosophy, IMHO.
Young players who are good and who could be turned for a profit are the holy grail of football. If one exists then chances are clubs with more money to spend than we do will grab them. Face it, there are almost an uncountable number of richer clubs around the world, each of which has multiple people scouting the globe for talent. The real choice is between bringing in leftover young players in the hope they somehow will turn out to be stars (i.e. a large percentage of this group will turn out to be nothing) or older players who have already proven themselves but who have lost some of that ability and are close to the end of their careers. If you had to make that choice, what would you do? Certainly taking a mix of the two approaches seems reasonable, which is what most clubs in MLS are doing.
Marquez is quite possibly the worst player on the team. So yes, the bar is low. But here is the thing. He's not the worst player because of lack of talent. He's the worst player because he doesn't give a flying f#ck. He doesn't track runners, doesn't get stuck in, throws teammates under the bus, and can't stay on the pitch (cards or health). Marquez wasn't a crap player before he got here and he still isn't a crap player for Mexico. He's a crap player for Red Bull. The worry is that Nesta gets here, doesn't care, doesn't want to get injured this late in his career (or DOES get injured due to his age), etc. Sure he's talented. Extremely talented. No one is arguing that.
There have been so many different stories out about this the last few days its near impossible to actually know whats going down. Seems as though there is no contractual agreement though. Now there is talk of Adebayor. So incredibly unlikely but if its pulled off it'd be amazing.
