Bocas' juvenil ranks opened the new season on Saturday with five wins and one draw against Godoy Cruz. Alan, playing for the first time with 4ta Div (highest level of youth fútbol in Argentina) started on the bench in the 1 - 1 draw. The match report doesn't say if he saw the field, unfortunately.

Started on the bench in a 4-1 victory over Gimnasia for the Cuarta División. Thanks to the picture posted by @Scotty above, we can surmise that he saw the field.

Though the picture may just indicate that he ran onto the field unilaterally and was immediately ejected for interfering with the match. I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

He seems to be getting more minutes this year than ever before but doesn't seem to be a every game starter.

Without going thru this entire thread, is he eligible and/or interested playing for the US?

Yes to both. What he may lack, given our current youth crop, is quality.

Thanks Eighteen Alpha. I remember reading about Joel, and seeing highlights of his MLS play on BS. It seemed several posters thought Alan was better. I have no idea. Good to be able to say no because we have better players.

Any update on Alan's progress? What level is he at? Is he a regular starter? How are his stats? Do we have any idea if he's progressing well?

He plays for the the Cuarto (4th) which is the highest Youth team. He seldom starts and is sometimes not in the squad at all, although, as I said above, he seems to be playing much more regularly this year as compared to last. It is hard to find actual stats so I can't say if he has any assists but he will score a goal now and then. I also can't say for sure which actual midfield position he usually plays, although he is generally known as an "enganche" or 10.

My partially informed speculation is that there has been a form of reverse nepotism concerning Alan. He is definitely not the best on his squad (that would be Kevin Mergen) but I think he plays less than his quality should dictate due to his father's position as Youth Director. Barring injuries and assuming continued development, I think he will turn out to be a solid pro at the senior level.

Cuarta is the highest youth level. I would have thought Alan aged out of that.

Don't they have many 19 year olds at that level?

It is U-19. Actually, "for players who do not turn 20 by 31 December of the respective year." As a '98, it seems Alan would have aged out. I could be wrong..
