I found this to be kind of interesting. It's also interesting that Henry Kissinger was on the Board for WC94 http://www.nationwidespeakers.com/speakers/alan_rothenberg.htm
kissinger is a big fan of soccer, i believe he has said he doesn't believe it will ever succeed here, but he enjoys it at the world cup level and possibly the euro game essentially along the same lines as deford... only much kinder
I believe he is already wrong. Quarterfinal WC finish and a 7 year old league getting better every year.
Kissinger was deeply involved in persuading FIFA to award the World Cup tournament staging to the USA for 1994. I read somewhere that Mexicans think he engineered a plot to get the Mexicans disqualified for the 1990 tournament, but I don't know how seriously they think that.
I'm not sure where you get from "doesn't believe it will ever succeed here" to "essentially along the same lines as deford".
deford enjoys soccer in the same way, and doesn't believe it will ever work here... like kissinger the difference is that deford is much harsher about it
Kissinger was also involved in the 1986 bid to host the cup. At that time he said: He doesn't sound like a guy who doesn't think soccer will ever make it in the US; at least back in the 80's. Murf
This is a good one. Comparing Hank's long time love of the sport with Deford's "ahem" views on the game. What's next, Jim Rome and Jeff Bradley comparisons? Andy
My memory is foggy, but somehow I remember him being involved with the NASL, even if it was nothing more than a photo-op. For some reason, the Philadelphia Atoms (or was it Fury?) come to mind, but it might have been another team. There was a time in the 70s when it was a cool thing for certain celebrities (mostly Brit rock stars) to jump on the NASL bandwagon. I remember people like Peter Frampton and Elton John, and I think Rod Stewart was seen tooling around with Trevor Francis in a big convertible as big as a riverboat barge. Those were the days... You had guys like Roy Sinclair who, when asked who of all the people in the US would he most like to meet, he answered, "The f***ing bloke who stole my leather jacket, that's who!" Tom
