This is news because it is a foreign news outlet talking about an MLS team and how it is similar to teams in Europe. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv19Qpkw2fA"]YouTube - Seattle Sounders storm MLS - AJE Sport - 10 Apr 09[/ame] http://english.aljazeera.net/sport/2009/04/200941110415153736.html
Potentially ignorant question: I am confused as to why it is all in english, isn't al jazeera the middle eastern news network?
In 2006 they launched a 24 Hour English Language station. It is one of the three largest English-language news channels worldwide (BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera).
Seriously, don't blame us if there is actual news coverage of the Sounders. You would think that the rest of you would be happy to see MLS media coverage considering how little there is.
oh please, if it were any other MLS team being covered by Al Jazeera it would probably end up as a thread in this board....hell, if an ESPN program did a 3 minute piece on an MLS team there would be threads on here. The Sounders are newsworthy in an otherwise stagnant MLS. You people just need to get over it, instead of ruining threads with comments like this.
No Teabaggin on my watch. Awight! I'm leaving for the game in an hour and I'll be on the lookout for any enemy's of my freedom fries.
savier, beating your chest over who is more "grassroots"? Not sure how much time you spend in Seattle, but the participation level here is higher than in Portland, imho. Not to say that Portland isn't high. Just trying to explain the context here. Our grassroots support, according to that article, stems from so many people being involved in soccer up here, across the entire social spectrum. I think you are stuck too much on the idea of supporters needing to form quasi-gangs and run propaganda campaigns against teams they are jealous of. Being a supporter is a lot simpler than that. It's just about loving the sport, loving the team, and loving the city.
Anytime Osama bin hidinginacave has anything to say Al Jazeera does seem to have the inside track....
I, for one, am glad to see the injection of enthusiasm that the Sounders have brought to MLS. Seattle has shown (at least for the short term) that European atmospheres are possible at club soccer games in the U.S. I hope that other fanbases will want to equal their intensity and raise MLS as a whole to another level. I had hoped that the Salt Lake fanbase would be the ones to do it, but I think our conservative nature stands in the way. Hat's off to Seattle and may the energy spread!
It's nice to see coverage of the team, but it's ashame that ESPN or a national news syndicate in the States can't do this. We still got a ways to go in getting a foothold with our media. And in terms of people not liking this thread cause it's another Sounders related topic--go f yourself. You're probably haters from that lil blackhole in the league called Columbus. You guys win a title and nobody cares. Relocate the Crew to an actual city and state.
#100 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Hong Kong Al Jazeera's Brendan Connor reports on how Major League Soccer's new franchise the Seattle Sounders are storming the table - and putting David Beckham's LA Galaxy in the shade - with help from ex-Sweden and Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg.
I didn't realize Seattle invented foreign media coverage in MLS. I guess you learn something new every day.
This was one ignorant remark my friend. All news agencies have their own agendas. (Do you trust Fox News with it's bullshit conservative and redneck mentality? Or do you trust CNN? CNN international tends to be better). The thing about Al Jazeera is that most of the times they will report the news with graphic pictures from IRAQ war or Afghanistan. As you know, US media censors a lot of stuff, and our media is owned by major corporations. Have you ever asked your self the question why the US media keeps ignoring showing the coffins of poor US soldiers that have died in a IRAQ? We tend to preach democracy, but our media is very much controlled by a few major corporations. In summary, if you keep insisting this type of ignorant and BS remarks about a middle eastern news agency, than one might assume you have not left the ERA of BUSH/Cheney Divisive American foreign policy. We need to get over this: the world will be a far much better place if we stop accusing each other and labeling. Labeling usually comes from ignorance and generalization. If you show FOX news to millions of individuals around the world, than they would laugh and say 'how bias and stupid the US Media is'. There is nothing great about CNN's Domestic coverage, but CNN international tends to be much better in terms of it's coverage. For many years, BBC was accused of promoting British propaganda. Nowadays, Al Jazeera is the fastest growing news agency in the world. You cannot label an organization 'terrorist' just because they report the news from a different angle and point of view. As a informed individual, you should be able to filter-out and deduce what is good reporting and what is bad. Al Jazeera might not be perfect, but it is nice to see that for million of viewers around the world they can watch the news from a different perspective that has a regional awareness and familiarity. If we want democracy around the world, than we should be able to digest and respect when we are criticized for our actions.
