Some highlights and comments. A incredible bail out of the Akron keeper by Jonas Buechte at about the 1:00 mark. ICYMI: #10 @ZipsMSOC puts another W in the win column! #20 Tyler Crawford's fouling of Gyuwon Chong was injurous and cynical. It should have been a straight red card from Referee Saimir Lilaj. Chong had clearly beaten Crawford to goal. Tackle was from behind, through the ball, and into the man. Howe basically jumped on Chong’s ankle with bad intent. I have countless times seen players ejected for much less. In any professional league, there would be no question whatsoever. Upon video review, the NCAA should retroactively issue an ejection thereby enforcing the one game suspension. In no way will such action replace Gyuwon Chong's ankle, but it would be the correct thing to do. https://www.gannett-cdn.com/presto/...pg?width=592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&quality=70
Clapier Named MAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week - University of Akron Athletics (gozips.com) Way to go Dice!
“Replace” sounds pretty ominous. Is Chong done for the year? If so that’s a big loss. I tried to see if I could find out anything about an injury status and could not. I did find a picture with Chong being attended to by medical staff and Embeck staring down a ref and clearly looking pissed. Howe, meanwhile, played the full 90. Earlier in the thread I mentioned seeing the Zips at NIU when I was complaining about their lack of home games on Friday & Saturday. Somehow I missed that their at Chicago State this year. I’m in Lincoln Park so that’s only 25ish minutes from me down on the south side.
they're* to the south side* I don't like that this forum doesn't have an edit function but that is what I get for posting at 6:15 with my coffee and on my iPhone SE!
Yeah, I guess I should have stated that it was time-limited instead of there not being an edit function. It's 30 minutes, I think. It's quite annoying. So, does anyone know the injury status of Chong?
What really stands out to me in that Akron was outshot, 19-4. Only 1 of those 4 shots was on frame. IU had 11 of their 19 on frame. That tells me that Akron's midfield was totally beaten up by IU and probably had almost no possession. In the video of the presser after the MSU game that I posted, Jared is asked about the team being more direct than in the past. I know that a good coach adapts the style of play to the strengths of his players but I really liked the tiki-taka Akron teams that were possession oriented. That is the soccer I prefer to watch, though. I see in the box that Gyuwon Chong did not play. I tried to find out what I could and never did. Either his injury is significant or they are resting him to make sure that it does not worsen. Hopefully the latter. Nice crowd of 3348
I was seeing a customer in Indy yesterday and gave some thought to driving to Bloomington for the game. I even packed a duffle with a change of clothes. Ultimately, due to a busy week and being tired, I decided that I was not up for a 4+ hour drive back to the Windy City after the game and decided not to go. I’m glad that I didn’t.
At Hoosiers, Zips could pass into the Midfield. But they were not allowed to make that next pass among Midfielders. Any success was either one touch out of Midfield into Offense, or directly over top the Midfield entirely. No second touches in MF were successful. Zips need someone in MF to receive and keep the ball in order for the team to advance up the pitch. Then deliver a high percentage pass. Gyuwon Chong was very sorely missed.
^ That is what I noticed last year when I saw them play Ohio State in Columbus. A lot of possession lost in the midfield. That is just not something I associate with Akron soccer. FWIW, the Ohio State soccer field is a horrible venue. I really do not like going to soccer games in which there is a track between the stands and the field. With as much money as Ohio State has you would think that they could build a dedicated soccer facility.
AKR 3-3 OSU FT Latest installment of the I71 Derby, complete with wild momentum swings, fights, and an ejection. You know, the usual.
Referee had a shocker. OSU had more and better chances, but their goals were from a corner, a terrible giveaway in midfield, and another corner. Strange night.
