Ajax have been dealt a major blow with the news that Cristian Chivu aggravated a knee injury in Romania's 1-0 defeat to Norway and will be out for a month.

He has flown back to Amsterdam for surgery and may now miss the club's remaining three Champions League first phase matches.

Chivu asked to be substituted in the match but was kept on by coach Anghel Iordanescu.

Latest news is less gloomy, he won't need surgery and will probably only miss Ajax's game against AZ this weekend.

    LINK Only in Dutch though

Oscar is spot on on this one.Though, to be honest,I didn't think CAPTAIN FANTASTIC would play away to Rosenborg with a bruised rib, and he did, or away to Feyenoord with a banged up knee and bruised rib, and he did. It's basically another case of coach Koeman waiting until just before game time on Zaterdag.

Fortunately, Cristian Chivu returned to Amsterdam after the Norway match. He had the MRI Monday morning and has been in treatment since.

Andre Bergdolmo, Norway central defender and Chivu's teammate at Ajax, also made the statement that Ajax was going to be livid "when they find out what happened". I think anyone who likes Ajax even a little would share Mario's sentiments about Mr. Anghel Iordanescu's stupid decision. Chivu was struggling for at least a quarter of an hour from what a friend in Romania tells me. To not pull him off may have ultimately backfired since, if I recall correctly, Norway scored rather late in the game.

    Another injury for Chivu

Well this just keeps getting stranger for poor Cristian. After the Amsterdam doctors finally confirm that his knee injury is minor and he won't need surgery or a long recovery, he sustained a new and copletely unrelated ankle injury during light training on Sunday morning! He's doubtful for the Rosenborg game now. The extent of the injury will be known tomorrow (Monday).
