Very clumsy game. We are a clumsy team. Very choppy play in the offensive half. The only play of any quality was Peltola's goal. All three Knoxville goals were a result of defensive breakdowns.
The team went from mediocre, to bad, to terrible, to atrocious, to starting Jackson Hopkins. Tuning into this team less frequently helps, but it's hilarious how awful this roster is without exception. This is truly a wooden spoon contender.
DC played 36 games last year and that was the only moment which sparked the slightest bit of joy. As DCU fans, we don't ask for much. Why would Weiler take that from us?
On the plus side, we played like we were the better team for the first 15-20 minutes. We clearly were not from that point on. We'd do something good to get possession, then immediately give it away - were we mesmerized by the funky orange stripes and felt the need to pass them the ball every time we had it? Latter part of the second half until the end we mostly just stood around; they beat us to every ball - they were in better shape, and they had energy and a game plan. Peglow did some good work on DC's 3rd goal, but it would have gone in the goal without him heading it just before it crossed the line. Good on Bono to get the assist, but he could have had the goal Oh well, the USOC is over All of the USL teams I like are now crashed out as well.
Just watched Weiler's post match presser. I think he is reaching the conclusion that the problems are both talent - something he has mentioned before -- and a general loser mentality. He noted that Knoxville wanted the match more and played without fear. He saw DCU players that were "static" and didn't drive the match forward. Said Turner played "OK". He ripped Hopkins a bit - said you can have potential and maybe you can play when there is no pressure (the 2025 Spoon campaign) but now the matches mean something and he finds Hopkins just lacking. (Something I agree with BTW, I've never been as impressed with Hopkins as folks like Rooney and Lesesne were. I think Hopkins is a good USL Championship player -- no more, no less.)
Yeah, after the first 15 minutes, they were generally very static other than short bursts. And for now little Louis has shown so far otherwise, he was one of the few people constantly making runs.
You may not think an early-season Spoon Derby is important but I think this might be the most important game of the season. It just feels like this team has two paths to take right now. If this terrible Philly team does it's customary Subaru Field obliteration of DC, one gets the impression that United could go into a death spiral.
Ya know, when you think about it, his hire made so much sense becuase of the way we went about the whole offseason, hiring a coach before a GM/sporting director and things have snowballed from there, pretty much as expected.
Baribo is back, no Louis. Markovic looks like he's getting the start next to Peltola in midfield. @Q*bert Jones III will be happy that Pirani did not make the bench. Two keepers did though.
Jeez, and that was before the Open Cup loss to a "3rd Div" team. And we're on pace to have the most dreadful offense in the history of MLS.
