He got his doo lopped off. What a damn shame. The dude looked pimp with long hair and now he has to sport that goofy fvcking hairstyle. Why must Korean dudes go to mandatory military service. The North ain't gonna do shlt. Only dumb Americans and paranoid Japanese think they're a threat. I'm an international F-1 student myself and gonna go through this BS in a few years. Hopefully, I'll get a permenent residency in the states to avoid going to the army.
Wow, best soccer player in his country and he still has to take time off to serve. Is he still going to be in the J-League when he gets back? I here some spanish clubs are interested in him..
Not really sure. I hope he goes to a La Liga club, but we've all been down this road before. He was suppose to go to Blackburn last year but the British denied him a work permit, he was suppose to go to Atletico Madrid towards the begining of this year during the January transfer window, but it fell through because the Japanese management company that had bought him out from Perugia when Ahn refused to go back to Italy needed Atletico to reimburse them with their investment towards Ahn, but Atletico found that maount too much so the deal fell through. So who knows what will happen this time.
of course the north is a threat, along with iran and syria and eritrea and france and canada and martinique. we're never safe from terror y'know. vote bush 2004.
Yeah, I've heard either Celta Vigo or Real Betis, I don't remember which one. Pretty sad state of affairs though, he should still be in Italy. However, if I was him I'd probably tell Perugia to *************** off as well.
Doesn't military service for Korean soccer players (after basic training, of course) basically mean playing for Sangmoo for a year?
What's the point of serving 4 weeks? Is this just a special deal kinda thing, being that he's Korea's most popular soccer star? Anyway, nice doo! I think you can see him holding back the tears now that his long curly beautiful lochs are gone.
I believe every member of the World Cup team who got exempted from the two-year service will still have to serve four weeks. That is, if I'm not mistaken. I thought Song was supposed to do his this summer too.. ..but Feyenoord.com says he's getting MARRIED on June 15th. Really?
You obviously don't know the infamy of the South Korean military. If you knew what went on with training, then even Terminator would be reluctant to go. The sheer barbaric way they train is due to the fact it has long been known the North Koreans train their soldiers with even more barbaric ways to harden them. So this is why South Korea's army had been literally hell on earth because they had to match somewhat of the brutal way the North trained its soldiers so in case of war, the South wouldn't get the shlt kicked out of them(as they did during the Korean War). In the South Korean military, incoming enlistees get the shlt kicked out of them almost on a daily basis by the higher ups, they train using live ammo on enlisted soldiers(such as doing that thing where you have to crawl underneath barbed wires, they shoot live ammo just inches above soldiers heads and among other training procedurals), endure more beatings if you make even the slightest mistake, learn all kinds of bad habits, get group beatings not because you messed up but just to harden a soldier. Almost every year, there are numerous cases where soldiers die while serving in the military through "mysterious" circumstances. Meaning, the physically weaker soldiers who get severely beaten often times just keel over and die and the military ends up covering it up by releasing false statements about an irregularity on his health. There has been countless amounts of families who tried suing the government but have lost every single time. So, to put it simply, yes, I am scared shltless to go back to Korea for mandatory military service. There have been a few cases where people in Korea have gone as far as gaining excessive weight, hurting themselves by breaking something, asking their family doctors to falsify their health reports just to avoid going to the military. All of these cases have been caught and been arrested. Scary shlt. But even if Ahn and the rest of the World Cup squad weren't exempted from military service, they would have been treated differently as is the case with celebrities and public figures. So to normal folks like myself and millions of others, we try to do what we can to avoid going.
Where did you get all this stuff?? I lived in Korea longer than your entire life, and I have yet to hear some of the stuff you are talking about here. I think it's funny that most Koreans (or American Koreans) who live in America exaggerate things in Korea in a bad way. You would think Korea is a third world country and people are starving to death if you just listen to them. It is definitely one of the toughest place to serve, no doubt, but what he's talking about is I say 70% wrong.
My cousin back in Korea was in "Gae Byung Dae" AKA Hae Byung Dae and told me all of thls shlt. I don't think he was exaggerating. He also suffered a fractured disc after a higher ranking officer gave him a beating when he was serving. He told me so many horrifying stories about bar room brawls, going to room salons, getting beaten up and beating up others. I knew he wasn't exaggerating because the reason he told me all of those stories was to convince me to apply for perminent residency as soon as I can. He didn't wish any of it for me or my older brother. And the brutal military training in Korea isn't a reflection of Korea's image at all. Korea is an economically prosperous nationt hat just happens to require a brutal training regimen to match up with the way the military in the North trains. It is in no way a reflection of a country's status at all. By thinking it IS a reflection is condescending. And you haven't heard or known anything about what I wrote? Were you living under a rock? A few Korean actors had been caught years ago trying to falsify his health to prevent from enlisting, former PResidential candidate Lee Hwe Chang's son got caught a little over a year ago for losing excessive weight and again falsifying health reports to prevent enlisting, a man broke his own legs years ago to prevent from enlisting. There has been numerous cases where soldiers have died while training with government coverups and their parents suing with no effect. Trying to show the good side of South Korea is all good, but you also have ot be objective about our nation. Yes, we're filthy rich, but there are a lot of problems with Korea and the military is just a small problem out of many others.
I believe they play for Sangmoo for 2 years and 2 months just like others. But since Sangmoo is just another soccer team, it can't take all the soccer players. Only the ones who are good enough to play in K-league go there.
There's this law that states "A man who makes greats contribution to the country may be exempt from military duties." It means not only sportsman but also artists, scientists, and etc. who, if serve military for 2 years, would hurt the country by wasting their talent. The ministry of defense and the ministry of culture and sports have set a rule back in the 50's that anyone who wins top 3 prizes in Olympics or world championships, or a gold in Asian Games would get exemption. So technically speaking, the only way for a Korean soccer player to get away with the military service is to win gold in Asian Games, to win at least bronze at the olympics, or to win the World Cup! Right before the '02WC, the soccer fans argued that since it's much difficult to advance to the 2nd round of WC than to win an olympic gold in say, Taekwondo, our soccer team should be awarded the exemption if they reach the round of 16. Then the non-soccer fans argued that it's a favoritism toward soccer and that they had their chance in AG (silver after Iran). So at the end, the government decided not to exempt the team should they reach the 2nd round. I guess no one has even dreamed about going past the 2nd round back then. However, as they reached the final-four giving our people the unprecedented joy since the liberation from Japan in 1945, the president cut them a slack and no one opposed him.
in the army you learn to do many things. Here is a list in order of importance: 1. befriending strangers (making friends easily) 2. ironing 3. cleaning (room, bed, and especially boots. Soldiers know how to make them shine) 4. Creative accounting (people who work in the snackbars especially) 5. Shooting a gun some smart people also literally reads 100 of books. I know of this guy who memorized something like 10,000 english vocab while he was in the army. and thing that how army kills you... i dont think you really die from training. But if you have appendicus or something at a real bad timing, you might die and everything will get covered up as an accident. but i wouldnt be surprised if people died from hae byung dae. Everybody who goes through that stuff becomes total ass h0les.
My cousin would probably drop kick you in the head if someone said something like that to him while he was serving. But it is true, they are grade A azzholes. He told me when him and his Hae Byung Dae friends got leave from service and was walking around the streets, everyone would Jjol Ah to them.
Every male that is capable has to recieve basic military training + serve full time. Now to Olympic medalists, and in this case, the WC Squad, which is a generous exeption, only has to serve 4 weeks of basic. Even Park Chan-ho only served 4. Park Ji-sung is due in sometime this month.
I think its the player's will to continue their sport in the Army. Average nobody's could try-out for Sangmoo but since every male on the peninsula has to join the service for 2~4 years, that means very tough competition. I believe Ahn Jung-hwan will practice with Sangmoo. Or he could just train on his own for 4 weeks. It doesn't matter anyway. Sangmoo sucks.
The Korean Marines are a total different story. They are the best in the world. They still do many co-ops with the Seals and ect. Yes, you do have to starve and heave the rubber 2-ton boat over your head and shoulders along with 7 other squad memebers in your platoon for 4 days. The regular army is a different story. It's the same way as Korean schools. If you get beat, and u don;t like it - then u sue. Simple as that. The Korean army (of course exept for some) and all other branches of service takes good care of their soldiers. OH- and the Coast Guard - we don't have the Coast Guard cuz they're pvssies. lol.
I don't know where you pulled that figure out, but you must have looked through 1985 GDP statistics on South Korea, brah' But most likely you pulled it out of your azz. This is the 2002 GDP figure of South Korea 19,400 USD (flutuates between 8 and 9 in World Rankings) It used to be just over 21K before the economic slump over the last few years, but the country is going back up again. South Korean companies such as Samsung, LG, Lucent Technologies, Daewoo(electronics division), CYON(high end 3G mobile phone makers) have all been outperforming Japanese products in sales for the last 2 and a half years in Europe, Asia, Middle East, and South America(In the US, Japan is still outselling Korean products) It is also projected, South Korea will go up 6 percent in GDP in 2003. http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ks.html
