Hopefully, the first of many for the Ivorian. Never heard of this award: Golden Lion prize, which is voted by African sports journalists and conducted by this Moroccan newspaper. (Any Moroccans in the house verify the credibility of this newspaper? :) I will assume it's like France Football award for the Euros.

I see it as African journos voting for the player who performed well on African soil. No doubt, Eto'o would have won it if Cam made it to the WC.

    Congratulations Didier. :)
For what it's worth, I think Drogba should be 2005 APOY.

    Tight voting outcome:
    Drogba - 146 points
    Eto'o - 144
    Essien - 54

    Here's the article from BBC:

I don't know how anyone can choose between Eto'o and Drogba. Two greats performing at top level for maybe the two best club teams in the world. But if I had to choose, Drogba, because he helped lead Cote D'Ivoire into the World Cup.

Yeah, that vote tally (146-144) shows how even they are these days.
