The Grand Final has been run and won – by the Geelong Cats in a tightly contested game.
At one point the scores were level for 15 minutes or so which is unusual for a match at any level.
The AFL has reported that the total attendance for the AFL final rounds was an all time record for finals.
    Link—
    http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=85431

We were pleased the Channel Ten match TV commentators again acknowledged the International TV audience watching at the Grand Final opening, and we do not have any estimated International total viewing audience this year.
Those viewers would have included our troops in that god forsaken country of Afghanistan and other postings.
It seems a lot of the overseas clubs use the match to explain the finer points to new recruits and to illustrate what they are learning. (Don’t know how much they remember after the celebrations though)

The TV ratings for the GF were at record highs in some locations around the country with some encouraging figures for Sydney and Brisbane. In Brisbane the weekly ratings have been sneaking up from previous years- Probably due to the confident high profile coach Michael Voss of the Lions who coached them to the final 8 for the first time in several seasons.

There is a story floating around that a Sydney R/L player with A/R experience is being courted to swap codes -However it maybe just "talk".

Another story around and about is that the AFL entertained several leading NSW Govt officials at the GF. This did actually happen and speculation is rife that the AFL is seeking funds for Stadium upgrade for the Sydney Showgrounds venue to take 25,000 for the West Sydney Club.

The NRL pundits are saying that an increase in Sydney crowds and general interest in their game will put the lid on the coffin for the AFL WS team.
No it actually wont but it will make it harder in the long term for WS18 to achieve their long term goals.
The AFL has recently indicated again it will allocate 400 million long term into NSW and QLD to help things along.

    International Expansion---
This story is from an unusual angle – A South African Zulu Choir toured Australia recently. While in the country they got involved with Aussie Rules footy and recorded several songs relating to the games steady development in their own country.
We will take any publicity we can get over there – Currently the South African media continue to ignore the happenings of Aussie Rules. Of course they have vested interests in keeping the status quo of Rugby U and Soccer – That is where they earn their income.

Another article from a different perspective on International footy. This is a great story of international politics being put aside for Aussie Rules.
The person involved can see the benefits our game can bring. Another NSW person recruited to Australia’s only Indigenous footy code. We need a helluva lot more though from that state.
There was no comment on the Peace teams possible appearance at the upcoming 2011 International Cup.

A promising player from PNG – David Meli has made it on to AFL Essendon’s International Rookie List.
This lists terms were revamped to encourage AFL clubs to pick up and have close look at International Talent.
Meli was involved in the successful U16 QLD State Team that beat NSW U16 State team to win the National Div 2 Title in Melb today.
It appears the new Gold Coast Club is also having a close look at the kids in the QLD team for future recruiting.

I'd love to see our great game expand internationally. It's way more than worth it, it's faster, tougher, more skillful, more attacking and a greater overall spectacle than the rest put together. But only to the point where the AFL get players from all over coming to play in Australia.

Re: AFL Expansion now has three possibilities

An unheralded historic day occurred yesterday in Canberra at the 2009 Draft Camp trials.
It was the first occasion that the media mentioned it. All 18 AFL clubs were there.
    Quote---
“All 18 AFL clubs – including the Gold Coast and Western Sydney – have descended on Canberra to watch this year's draft hopefuls go through their paces at the NAB AFL Draft Camp.”

    International Expansion---
The USAFL Nationals are coming up in Mason Ohio in early October.
    Some points to look at---
About 1,000 players and officials will travel to the venue.
A record number of teams will attend
Selection for the US National squad will on the minds of several players
The higher Divisions play 18 a side with 4 on interchange. (Normal)
This year sees a much stronger Div 1 as the playing standard rises.
**** There are notes in the main link below to explain Div 1 seeding.
No combined teams until Div 4 which is a major step forward.
The Women’s game in the US and Canada continues to grow from an absolute nil base in 2004 to several teams scattered about both countries. (Not all attend the Nationals)
    Canadian teams feature in ---
    Div 1 Men--
Vancouver in Pool B (2008 Winners)
    Calgary “Pool A

    Women---
    Calgary A in Pool A
    Toronto-Montreal in Pool A
    Calgary B “Pool B

PNG Port Moresby Senior Aussie Rules League----
In the Grand Final match last Saturday the Moresby Swans were beaten by the Kuboni Demons by 6 points.
This league was restructured with 7 clubs, major sponsorship and an inclusion of youth players for the 2009 season. It is expected to stabilize from now on in an at times volatile environment.
Those moves would have been very welcome for the PNG flagship product of our game.
    Link---

The next major event for AFLPNG will be an October match in Moresby between the PNG National team and a QAFL side. This will continue the close co-operation between the two sports bodies.

The second Irishman at the AFL Collingwood Club has quit citing injury and homesickness. After spending 2 seasons with the club Kevin Dyas boarded the same plane home as compatriot Martin Clarke.
Dyas had an injury interrupted season this year losing considerable time in rehab after a promising first year start in 2008.
Also interesting to note that Collingwood thought he may not be able to stand up physically to AFL footy. The high turnover continues with the Irish experiment.
However the club will continue undeterred to monitor other Irish players over there.
The AFL Clubs all hoping to find another Taigh Kennelly of Sydney Swans fame.

    West Sydney Expansion---
It has been officially confirmed that the GWS18 club will play in the Victorian based U18 TAC Cup in 2010. This move was fast tracked 12 months to meet the now 2012 not 2013 AFL entry date and follows the Gold Coast’s Club foray this season in to the same comp. The Gold Coasters made it into the finals as well which will be a benchmark of sorts.
    Link---
    http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=85523

Tom Harley the successful Geelong Cats Captain has unofficially been linked to the GWS18 Club IF he announces the retirement of his playing career.
His partner is resident in Sydney and she has a high profile job in that city. Previous speculation said that he may be offered a mentoring role if interested. His experience would be invaluable.
    Link—
    http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/br...weighing-up-afl-retirement-20090929-gans.html

We have heard very unofficially that the entry of GWS18 in 2012 may see the retirement of both A Demitriou (AFL Executive boss) and M Fitzpatrick (AFL Commission boss) from their current roles- It appears they may have some sort of pact to see the new club up and running.

    Gold Coast Expansion---
Ex West Coast Eagles star Guy McKenna has officially been handed the Gold Coast coaching job until 2012. McKenna had been operating as the initial caretaker coach.
His comments on the initial prospects of the club in 2011 are pretty accurate.
    Link---
    http://news.realfooty.com.au/breaki...to-coach-gold-coast-in-afl-20091001-gdub.html

The trading round-about has started with the new clubs having plenty of money to chase out-of-contract stars and lesser stars.
We are tipping the biggest shakeup in the player transfer market for many seasons with usually reticent to leave their club players looking at big and not so big offers depending on their contract and relative star status.
As we discussed earlier in another post the talent depth in Australia will be sorely tested and recruiters will have to get their act together.
The article below discusses the current Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett Jnr and a big offer from the Gold Coasters.

    International Expansion---
AFL Fiji will be launched this month in Suva. This is the second attempt in recent years to get a foothold in that country.
However this time around a better structural set up is envisioned with two AFL Clubs involved separately, organized and enthusiastic Committee and Auskick materials support from the AFL.
It appears that the body responsible for the South Pacific AFL Oceania has received increased funding from either AFL QLD or AFL House and this is also assisting AFL Fiji.
This is all good news and as is commented in the article/interview below –“They all cannot get in the national rugby team”.
Rugby Union has had a long presence in Fiji but it may be loosening a bit – Rugby League and Soccer football are also established in the South Pacific nation.
We think the Eagles should loan out Nick Natanui for the launch over there – He really stands out with his hairstyle and down to earth manner, and would attract a crowd in a flash.

    International Expansion---
This edition will be a South African Special.
AFL South Africa held it Nationals recently with 4 Provinces involved and owing to its regular ground in Potchefstroom tied up due to International Cricket Commitments an alternative had to be found.
A new ground was developed and up and running for the Nats. The new ground will be used in 2010 for a new domestic comp for the Province of North West.
Very significantly the article below says that multi-use grounds in SA will be become common as our game grows over there.
    Link---

All of the trials and tribulations of International footy are on show here as a small but growing new sport getting organised to view the AFL Grand Final in the remote town of Potchefstroom in South Africa. This South African town was where Aussie Rules first put its roots down several seasons ago.
Adversity like this makes the sport stronger in everyway. Something to look back on later.
    Link---
    http://www.aflsouthafrica.org/index.php?nav=news&view=68

Western Province Magpies took out the National Provincial Championship at the venue described above.
The comment about the WP being stronger and deeper in talent is a reflection of their Open Age Domestic League (Blue Scope Steel Sponsors) now well and truly up and running.
No doubt the other Provinces will want to catch up – So expect similar domestic leagues in their areas. So in the future long term and with some crystal ball gazing we may see a National League start up if all goes well. (Semi-Professional?????)
The four Provincial teams are named after their respective AFL Club sponsors who are screening looking for talent for their own resources.
About 120 players and officials attended the Nationals which will grow of course as more Provinces come on aboard.
What we like about the “South African Project” is the steady structured expansion that is underway – No hit and miss methods over there
(An interesting addition at the Nats might be the neighbouring Country of Botswana who now has an AFL presence due to their Students attending Education Facilities in S.A. where our sport is available. They like the game and have returned home wanting to continue to play.)

Any International footy players out there – The article below describes the new kicking test devised at the Draft Camp – Set it up and see how you go.

It appears that the Melbourne City Council is making preparations to travel to Tianjin in China again this month to follow up on previous visits. The main purpose is to foster links between Tianjin and Melbourne which includes Aussie Rules football.
There was a purpose built AFL ground to be developed in that city. Also the AFL Melbourne Club has set up links there as well.
We note from an article on the AFL Website that football ambassador Kevin Sheedy and Ken Gannon from the AFL Executive have also visited China recently to inspect facilities in Shanghai in conjunction with the big Exposition in 2010. There was an AFL match mooted there at that time.

We have been tracking a topic that is not covered by the media but has a bright future long term – Women’s footy in Australia and overseas.
The visit of the US Womens team earlier this year highlighted the overseas potential.
In QLD currently a 3 match series between Vic and QLD featuring the best U18`s girls is being held. Vic won the first game by 42 pts and the second match by 13 pts.
The banana benders nearly caused an upset in the second one.
The two states involved are advanced in their Womens development. WA is introducing a regular U18`S comp in 2010. All of this support is a forerunner to a planned National Women’s Senior League in the future, which has the moral support of the current Federal Govt Sports Minister – Kate Ellis.
Soccer Australia has managed to extract full funding out of the Feds for their National Womens`League, perhaps Australia`s only Indigenous Football Code may get something similar down the track.
We think SA and NSW U18`s are behind in development and will have to catch up before anything is progressed.
Internationally clubs have now formed in Canada in a couple of locations, and PNG is holding U16`s comps which is a starter, and of course more clubs are popping up in the US who will send a Women’s team again in 2011.

    West Sydney Expansion---
AFL NSW/ACT recently held a mini Aussie Rules footy comp at Fairfield High School. This was after a six week AFL introductory course for the 120 International migrants.
Not all of these will stick but some will and join the other kids that play the game in the area.
It is intended to expand this successful program to other similar schools in the region in 2010.
Interesting to note that the organisers had several inquiries from kids in the area about the course, which is better than none.
We realise a few kids will not cut it for GWS 18 to make it. Another important factor will be business support/sponsors. The AFL invited 600 local businesses to a lunch recently to gauge support.
Remember folks 70% surveyed in the GWS area had NO interest in our game BUT 30% did or were slightly curious.
The AFL is trying to start a club from scratch –It aint gunna be easy.

    =========================================
The NRL Grand Final out rated the AFL Grand Final for the second time in recent years.
It appears that the big regional audiences in NSW and QLD help get them over the line and the appearance of the Melbourne Storm team in their GF is critical.
The two occasions they won the ratings was when Melb Storm was in the GF which tells us Melb sports fans will watch any top level sport away from the AFL. It is no secret it is the Sports Capital of Australia.
The figures drop off if two northern state teams in the NRL GF and if two southern teams in the AFL GF.
Historically the highest record rating for any AFL GF was in 2005 when Sydney beat the West Coast Eagles.
What does all of this mean –The NRL has to have the Melbourne Storm in the GF to attract record ratings.
The AFL has to have Sydney in the GF to attract record ratings.
Just to balance all of this out the AFL won the GF 5 Capital City ratings comfortably. We believe this is where the main advertising dollar goes, and our game runs for longer – Meaning more ads.
    AFL – 2,878,000 NRL – 2,420,000
Also another fact is – News Ltd (Rupert Murdoch) owns 50% of the NRL and 100% of Melbourne Storm. Unlimited funds available to support the Storm since their Melbourne inception.
The AFL will be doing the same for GWS18 and a lesser extent GC17.

    International Expansion---
Tim Harcourt an official with the Federal Govt Austrade Dept has written an article on the Globalisation of Australian Rules Football.
Apparently the Federal Minister for Trade Simon Crean has mentioned that our game should be exported overseas and fully supported in any efforts in that direction.
Austrade has got involved directly occasionally but not with huge sums of money.
    Link---
    http://www.smartcompany.com.au/gone...ere-cazaly-the-globalisation-of-football.html

    Gold Coast Expansion---
Yes it is now official –Work on the new 25,000 seat AFL Stadium at Carrara will commence in November.
It is expected to host its first match in mid 2011 which says the Gold Coasters will travel to the Gabba in Brisbane for their early 2011 fixtures.
The venue will also have upgraded patron facilities such as parking and access.
Apparently near the complex there maybe a proposed new entertainment venue, which indicates the flow on effect new developments attract.
However the Gold Coast Club and the AFLQ Southport Sharks have done a deal for the Sharks 40,000 Social members to get access to the AFL matches. (Not sure how many Aussie Rules fans in that lot???)
This means the GCFC Members and probably visiting AFL Club members will get access to the Sharks Pokie Palace.
    Link---
    http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/br...tart-on-gold-coast-stadium-20091008-go6i.html

This link has artists impressions of the finished development. There is a training type oval next door which may have been added.
The facility is also being touted for the 2108 Commonwealth Games (Ex British Colonies) And 20/20 Cricket Comps.
    http://goldcoastfc.com.au/news-and-media/news/premier-gives-the-gold-coast-a-preview-of-new-stadium/

    QLD Expansion---
This another good news story – AFL Cairns staff on the road promoting Auskick in their region with 6 week courses. Kids have 6 weeks to try the sport and some will stick leading to the formation of regular school comps THEN Junior Clubs.
The AFL subsidises the Auskick packs which keeps the price down for parents.

    International Expansion---
Aussie Rules Europe recently held the 9 a side 2009 EU Cup at Samobor which is near Zagreb the Capital of Croatia.
This was the fourth EU Cup held since its inception and has provided the newer EU countries an opportunity to strut their stuff with fledgling squads and pick up more info on the game.
This year Italy competed for the first time which attracted some interest. The Italian connection in our game in Australia is strong with many descendants of Italian immigrants playing in the Aussie Rules heartland states.
The organizers report that a squad of interested Rugby League players from Russia of all places showed some interest but did not make it.
Players left over from the main squads and other new countries with a few players make up the EU Crusaders
The 15 teams in the 2009 competition were divided into pools.
A: Andorra, Czech Republic, England, Finland.
    B: Austria, Croatia, France, Scotland.
C: Germany, Iceland, Italy, The Netherlands.
    D: EU Crusaders, Ireland, Spain.

The England Dragonslayers and the The Netherlands made it to the Grand Final.
    Final Score – Dragonslayers 12.9 81 def The Netherlands 8.9 57.
This was the second successive EU Cup title for the English team coached by Rob Fielder, which bodes well for footy in the old dart.

Meanwhile in England the British Bulldog team took on the Danish Vikings near London in a normal version of the game.
This caused a few headaches for the selectors because of a clash with the EU Cup.
The match was won by the British Bulldogs.

It’s a pity that these Internationals cannot be played on proper cricket venues which abound in England which would improve the perceptions of the game over there.
    ------------------
In further news from AFL South Africa four talented players have been selected to travel in November to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
Very intriguing that the young Rugby player was recommended by his coach to travel to Melbourne and try out for our game. This tells us the other codes are now well aware that our game exists over there despite a current media reporting blackout.
While there they will be tested and put through their paces by AIS/AFL Staff. Also scrutinizing their efforts will be talent scouts from the 18 AFL Clubs.
It appears that other countries players will also be at the camp, and the South African talent production line is just starting to get into gear.

Two Under Age Australian teams will tour South Africa in 2010. The first team to tour will be “The Flying Boomerangs” who are an Indigenous Aboriginal squad which will be early in the year. They will play 2 matches against elite A and B South African squads.

Later in the year on April 11 the Elite AIS/AFL U18 squad from Canberra will play against a National South African Lions team at Sahara Park Newlands which is a major International cricket ground. Having access to venues like that is another reason why our game will go ok over there and the sport will build up a spectator following over time.

Denmark and Sweden have pooled their talents and will issue invites to other European Countries to the Inaugural Aussie Rules 18 a side European Championship from July 31 to August 8 2010. The competition will be jointly hosted by the two countries above.
This is a positive move because 18 a side is the official format to enable the game to move forward.
There has been in 2009 a perceptible upsurge in development in the EU of our game and this competition will enhance that.
We hope some of the newer countries are able to gather their resources in time for the event if invited.

We believe a conference after the 2009 EU Cup in Croatia was held to discuss the formation of AFL Europe and the future direction of the sport over there. Our sources say decisions have been made and await ratification by all the parties involved after the delegates return to their home countries.
It will be very interesting to see what transpires.

The USAFL Nationals have been completed in Maison Ohio.
38 teams fronted up to the venue which had been well prepared.
Traditional Powerhouse Club – The Denver Bulldogs have added to their already impressive CV by winning another National Title.
    Div 1 result
    Denver Bulldogs 2.5 17 def Seattle Grizzlies 2.2 14.
The Grizzlies have risen through the ranks to go very well this year and were polled at No 4 prior to the Nats. The Bulldogs came in at No 5.

Div 2 Winners – Calgary Kangaroos (Canada)
Div 3 Winners – Dallas Magpies
Div 4 Winners – Ohio Valley Rats/St Louis Blues (Combo team)
Women’s Div Winners – Milwaukee Lady Bombers

    Observations on US footy –
A more determined effort to get Juniors organised appears to be underway in 2009 and 2010, and the US sports market is very competitive and crowded and minor sports battle for recognition and major sponsorship.
New clubs appear to be still forming however looking at the Division winners above –The Dallas Magpies were a powerhouse club and the St Louis Blues were a lot stronger.
single team. Of course not all players can travel and this affects team strengths.
We think this is a reflection of the player supply to the clubs – Traditional structures underpinning each team are crucial – Seniors, Youths, and Juniors.
Several Northern Hemisphere countries like the US do now have a disadvantage in this regard and the gap between the international haves (Southern Hemisphere) and have nots will only widen. Read about one of the “have” countries who are better supported but also need more resources in the next article.

AFLPNG has re-launched their Web Site recently and it appears to be ready to go forward. This country is crucial to the progress of International footy, because for starters they currently hold the important International Cup which was won in Melbourne last year, when they beat NZ the previous Cup holders.
There is a 2009 report on the site by the Development Officer for the Highlands Region of PNG. It makes for interesting reading – The theme that runs through it is- If we had more resources our game could be much bigger in that region despite the geographical difficulties.
It is frustrating to read this kind of stuff – AFLPNG is under the wing of AFL Oceania and AFL QLD who are doing a great job with their current resources for PNG but things could be so much better.
Rugby League and Soccer Football both at Semi-Pro status are starting to get more serious up there with support and funding – Enough said.

    International Expansion---
The first round of the second season of the AFL Middle East Comp has been completed.
Full results in the article below featuring 6 clubs competing and one club for the bye.
Auskick games and clinics are also being held.
In the write up on the Dubai Heat they talk about traveling further a field in a westerly direction geographically to promote our game with matches also thrown in.
There are also season previews of the 7 clubs involved.

Now for something completely different footy wise. This story was not covered by the mainstream Aussie Rules footy media at the time.
East Timor a new independent country just north of Australia has had a tough time since it became separated from Indonesia.
The average wage is 7 Aussie dollars a week; infrastructure is very basic, and unemployment very high.
This is where sport can help so a group of Aussies up there introduced our game to the locals in 2008. Soccer football is the established football code.
A team was formed and they competed in the 2008 International Bali 9`s hosted annually by the Bali Geckoes. This year they traveled to Darwin in the north of Australia and played the Bali Geckoes for the “Crikey Cup.”
The article below describes the background to the mixed team of locals and expats and the match itself.

NRL star Karmichael Hunt remains in the media spotlight before his switch to the AFL.
Apparently the pundits think the AFL should not have let him travel overseas and play RU before AFL pre-season training commences on the Gold Coast.
Later News -----Hunt is due to start training with the Coasters in May next year. He may be joined by his partners brother Scott Harding who was just de-listed by the AFL Brisbane Lions.
The Coasters said they would consider Harding and others after the 2009 Draft is over. They will need some experienced players to balance out their young list, and heaps of players have just been de-listed by the 16 2009 AFL clubs.

News Update ---Hunt gets the ok from the French Rugby Union Club and flies out from Brisbane to join them complete with his Aussie Rules Sherrin football, and the fears of one unnamed Rugby League Coach. (Paranoia is alive and well in the NRL world folks including many sports forums despite a very successful 2009 NRL season on the field)
Every time the word AFL is used in the media in connection with Hunt we get priceless publicity in a non Aussie Rules heartland.

This is an interview done with the two Melbourne based 2009 Premiership winning coaches in the AFL and NRL. Apparently they bumped into each other overseas last year after both coaches had lost their respective GF`s.
Mark “Bomber” Thompson let it slip that he will retire from AFL Geelong coaching at the end of the 2011 season.

It appears that Rugby Union football in Australia is going through a down turn since the successful 2003 World Cup held in Sydney.
We visit a couple of Rugby Forums and general opinion agrees with the article.
AFL and the NRL have just had successful 2009 seasons to add to their worries, however RU has never had a large player base in Australia say compared to NZ and SA and struggles to support player wise their S14 teams. The S14 will be expanded to S15 with the possible addition of a club from Melbourne to add to the troubles of finding competitive squads of 22 for each match.
Late news--- A South African Franchise is bidding strongly in a late move also for the 15th team and are also favourites to get the nod.
The Wallabies are off shortly for their end of season overseas tour – It will be interesting to see how they go, and if this decline can be linked to their on field performances.

    International Expansion---
The growth of Aussie Rules footy in the Oceania/South Pacific region continues at an increased rate now that proper development is occuring.
AFL Fiji has now been officially launched at a meeting last Friday.
The other football codes are all claiming growth as well and it remains to be seen if full co-operation is reached as hoped in the article.
The AFL Oceania boss in a media statement to the Fiji Times said that player numbers will increase to over 10,000 in the next 18 months.
We assume he means that Auskickers are excluded from the figure.
He indicated that that the number of countries to the next 2011 International Cup will jump up to 24.
However these are projected figures and will have to be achieved.

    International Expansion---
Last year in Melbourne China attended its first International Cup and being newcomers to the game had a steep learning curve. However the players enjoyed the experience and are keen to front up again in 2011.
Our game is established over there but it will take a few years to consolidate its presence in the huge population.
The Chinese player featured in the article is set to continue but is looking for more AFL support. The AFL Melbourne Club has set up support ties over there and will continue to do so in the future.

On November 9 the Beijing Bombers will host the Inaugural China Cup. This will be a three way comp between the Bombers, Shanghai Tigers and the Hong Kong Dragons.
These are primarily Expat clubs but are expanding the game to include locals.

Video technology may be used in controversial goal umpiring decisions accompanied by an AFL promise “Not to interrupt the free flowing nature of the game”

Foreign born players currently playing in the AFL comp are small in number. However as the overseas development programs particularly in the big three Southern Hemisphere Countries mature they will build up.
The talent pool in Australia is finite even with big spending in NSW and QLD.

Another PNG recruit has signed on with an AFL club with a 2 year International Scholarship.
PNG player development/recruitment is now at a more advanced stage than South Africa and New Zealand.
The obvious benefits of playing in Australia via AFL QLD is now shining through for these players.
A pathway has now been set down. For the long suffering supporters of International Footy this signing and the others that will happen in the future – It is good news.
Some of these guys will make it long term and increase the interest around the place.

I salute your efforts as Minister for Propaganda, but the AFL's overseas development is still woeful. They didn't even track participants properly until a couple of years ago, and the entire program is lucky to get a paragraph or two in the annual report.

The whole ball of wax is amateur hour - a few thousand dollars here and there to give the impression of progress while millions are sunk into oversaturated markets here in Australia. ARI is a complete joke, with the AFL doing little to help other than issue press releases to make a big deal out of the small potatoes that are being invested.

Re: AFL Expansion now has three possibilities

I salute your efforts in closely following the activities of the AFL, and reading these posts. Your knowledge of their International efforts is quite detailed to be exact.
However I have been following the international stuff for about 8 years and happen to think it is a good idea There is progress being made albeit slowly.
The best way to describe the AFL International attitude is to call it "Ambivalent". and they could spend much more.
In spite of the lack of early support and funding the programs in the Big Three countries (SA,NZ,PNG) are now bearing early fruit ie Several internationals are now appearing in Rookie lists- and will be attending next months AIS/AFL Camp along with the cream of Australia`s young Aussie Rules players.
The current 16 AFL Clubs have just realised that the 3 annual drafts from 2010 will be barren for the cream of the early picks due to the new clubs.
The talent pool is FINITE even with NSW and QLD spending.
Rugby Union in Australia does not have a deep talent pool.
Rugby League in Australia has heaps of Kiwis and Islanders involved -No deep pool there either.
So International footy will be the next step ie The AFL Hawthorn program just started in NZ while modest can be expanded.
The four AFL clubs involved in South Africa are in modest programs that can be expanded. This is all happening with out huge AFL support.

    International Expansion---
We briefly mentioned the creation of AFL Italy in Milan earlier this year, and who intend to organise a 9 a side domestic comp in 2010 and travel again to the 2010 EU Cup.
The league did compete in the 2009 EU Cup as a separate team which was quite an effort in their very short history.

According to their Facebook page the League will have a training session on Oct 31 and then on Nov 7 host a “Friendly match” against the AFL Germany Club – The Frankfurt Redbacks.
Great to see this league being active and enthusiastic and we noticed the leagues colours are the national Italian All Blue of course.

AFL St Kilda - 2009 Grand Finalists have landed an older than usual (21 years old) leading Gaelic Football player on their International Rookie list for 2 years.
This player – Tommy Walsh from County Kerry –looks the goods. Ideally built for our game. We have been a bit sceptical about the Irish question –Particularly the young players- Lets see how an older type goes where the go home and other factors maybe less.

    West Sydney Expansion---
There has been a flurry of articles on the proposed West Sydney Group.
The AFL has appointed an Ex NRL Manly Club boss (2008 NRL Premiers) to oversee the club who have been given 18 months to find sponsors etc, and structure a license proposal to the AFL Commission. What happens if License support is not there- Will the AFL go ahead anyway – Probably.
As a side note -The cross code stuff above continues with the Queensland Rugby Union appointing an Ex AFL admin guy to head its group also.
AFL NSW Manager Dale Holmes has given the period of 25 years to really establish the sport/club in that area. We think it all depends on field success – If they achieve final 8 positions within 5/10 years growth will come quicker.
Another factor will be how involved Canberra will be in the clubs plans – Like how many GWS games they will get. We keep getting told that there is dormant AFL support in the ACT by people who live there. We will wait and see.
The generous GWS draft concessions are similar to the Gold Coast Club it has been announced also. They (GWS) will be given every opportunity to establish a decent young player base.

The West Sydney recruiting boss airs his views and work in progress.
It looks like other sports in his region will be targeted as well – The existing GWS kids playing Rugby L and Soccer Football will not switch over.
However from 2010 he has the whole state and ACT to recruit from. A very interesting stat popped up the other day- There are 69 NSW kids on the AFL Clubs books from the NSW AFL Scholarship Scheme which opened in 2005 – The talent is there in limited numbers.

    International Expansion---
As was previously reported Aussie Rules footy is being set up in the Rugby stronghold of Fiji per the staff from AFL Oceania.
The ABC Pacific did an radio interview with the various parties involved. Some interesting stuff came out of the interview, which included the AFL participation figures in PNG. (Just about equal with South Africa.)
Again its all about increasing the talent pool for our game – Not unlike what Rugby Union, Rugby League have done in the region for many years.

This is an older article from the NZ Media. Our game generally gets ignored by the media over there so it is intriguing/surprising to see this stuff popup – No doubt it was driven in part by Ex New Zealander Karmichael Hunts decision to join the AFL in 2010.
That decision has had implications that have spread everywhere.
The unmentioned AFL club in the piece was of course AFL Hawthorn who since have now gone public on their AFLNZ partnership in NZ Secondary Schools.
Note the emphasis on talent search and the increasingly confident approach that the AFL can offer professional careers to budding young NZ players through a thorough pathway.

    North Queensland Expansion---
It had to happen – AFL boss Andrew Demitriou floated a 20 team comp by 2020 with the North Queensland AFL outpost of Cairns possibly getting a club. Our game has a long history up there and has first class ground facilities.(Cazaly Oval)
The Cairns AFL admin are definitely interested it seems. Note we said 2020 at least.
A lot of knowledge and experience is going to be gained with the setting up of the new clubs and mistakes should be kept to a minimum in the future we hope.

This article originally appeared in the local Perth newspaper several weeks ago. The Age newspaper in Melbourne has now picked it up.
Still no news on the AFL Germany website on the gridiron support indicated in the article. We covered this stuff in an earlier post on this forum.
It is a realistic look at our games development in Europe. Note emphasis on self help for the European Clubs and Leagues. We will do a piece on the latest news from there shortly.
One promising point is that the big four countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy) in the EU population and influence wise now have our game set up and established after some rocky starts.
The GB is the most advanced currently.

    New Zealand Expansion---
NZ footy officials have had 264 reasons to wear broad smiles this week. The number 264 represents the number of NZ Secondary School Students who played in the early rounds of the FIRST AFL Hawthorn Hawk Cup last week.
The finals to be held in early November from which a 50 member squad will be assembled to later be condensed into a travelling group to Fiji.
22 Secondary Schools from three regions put their hands up to be involved for the first time.
They played 12 a side games on Rugby Grounds after school hours. Obviously for the majoritory it would have been the first occasion they had played our game.
Some of the players will stick with our game and hopefully link up with the established NZ clubs and others will move on- However this is a breakthrough with lots of upside because the number of schools will also increase over time.
The bait dangled in front of the students was to try out for the NZ National team to compete in the Oceania Cup in Fiji in December. AFL talent scouts are already scouring the matches as they occur.

AFLNZ held their Annual National Provincial Championships on the weekend. Four Provinces with squads of 30 players each contested the event with Wellington winning the final by beating the perennial Champs Auckland. A fifth province – Otago – based around the big University has taken the first steps in development this year.
There are expats involved but are in the minority.
Subtle changes are occurring in our game in NZ with all provinces aiming to have reserve teams in Domestic comps for the first time this season
The footy season is currently squeezed in between the Rugby and Cricket Seasons and runs from August to December.
The Wellington Domestic League was very happy in 2009 in that they fielded 4 full teams for the first time while the 30 member Provincial side was away at the NPC.

    600 Youth Players - 27 teams
    100 Junior Players
    Total 1557 players
Kiwikick (Auskick) is underway but no figures given.
As a comparison there are 150,000 Rugby Union players and 15,000 Rugby League players in NZ

    New Zealand Expansion---
A Victorian Amateur Football Association U18 team played a NZ U20 side in 2 games in Auckland on the weekend.
The VAFA won both games but the scores were closer than we thought.
NZ U20 development is a recent event in their footy history so game experience and know how would not be extensive.
The best thing about these matches – The Kiwis get to play an Australian side, with the obvious pluses.
The Amateurs overall are tipped to get more connected to international footy in the future.
    Results in the article below.

The AFL Hawthorn – AFLNZ Partnership has now hit the mainstream footy media. The article below from Melbourne has a lot more info in it.
The commitment by Hawthorn is bigger than previously thought, which includes their financial involvement.
We hope that other 10 clubs get off their rear ends and get involved elsewhere. (Excluding the 4 clubs in South Africa and 1 club in China)
This is great news for international footy but it may widen the gap between the Haves and the Have nots. We speculate if the NZ Sports Media will pick this story up.

    International Expansion ---Europe
We reported recently that immediately after the 2009 EU Cup held in Croatia a conference was held to discuss the future of the game in Europe.
Two leading footy countries did not attend this comp – Long established Denmark and later arrivals Sweden.
A very intriguing situation has now arisen out of that conference, which we sort of predicted earlier this year.
To give some background to this situation – Currently most International Leagues accept the AFL as keepers of the code and sign an affiliation agreement with them, and can have the AFL prefix in their title.
What they get in return is only known to them as per the affiliation terms.
However the AFL does organise and support the 3 yearly International Cup Series (No Expats) in Melbourne to which International footy self funds itself to travel to and does make efforts to attend. The last Cup in 2008 (16 countries attended) saw AFL support rise to a new level and the event was very well organised in all areas. The event is also gaining momentum and importance due to the Australian talent pool being finite.
24 countries are hoped will attend in 2011.At this time we have no idea who the newcomers will be – Possibly some more of our neighbours to the north and the east and others from Europe but European air costs are high.

We expected that the Europe Conference would at least adopt the name AFL Europe –This will not happen it seems. – A search is on for a new name to cover footy activities in that region.
Our sources indicate that the European clubs collectively realise that they will be come more “self sufficient” from their own efforts rather than the ambivalent AFL.
So Government Anti -Obesity programs, Govt Sports Grants, private sponsors, and the German clubs being supported by the Gridiron Group etc, spring to mind for this situation.
It appears that in conjunction with this philosophy a decision was made to consider the AFL as a partner and NOT affiliate. Although not indicated it is likely the AFL would be recognised as keepers of the code.
The outcomes have not been outlined yet, and how the AFL may react is unknown.
Footnote – Currently there are approx 25 active footy countries in Europe ranging from very small groups to 6 team leagues.
22 Countries are not active – That is some were active but are now dormant and others have never been involved. Its not easy being a very minor sport in 350 million people, but it is growing despite all the hurdles.

    International Expansion---
AFLPNG continues to develop our game over there in conjunction with many other Groups and Foundations.
Here is a piece about how an Ex PNG great (Not Mal Michael) travelled to a far flung corner of the country and held an Auskick type clinic. Interesting to note the girls got into it more than the boys.
Also talks historically about PNG players who came to Australia over 20 years ago to play.
Another lost opportunity it seems to give our PNG game a more solid footing back then. That is one part of the story of International footy –Lost Opportunities in the past.

The AFL beefs up its talent search in the two non heartland States from this year. There can no doubt that they are starting to flex their financial muscle now. All this kind of stuff is not cheap.
The NSW AFL Scholarship Scheme which has about 10 youths listed on the AFL Clubs lists will become defunct at the end of 2010. What happens to that lot in 2011 we do not know. Perhaps those dropped off will go into the NSW Academy’s.

We actually discussed this topic earlier this year on another thread.
The AFL has decided to expand the original “Oceania U18 squad” for the 2010 U16 Nats to include youth players from around the globe and change its name to reflect that.
The big three countries will fill most places in the “World Squad” but the opportunity for other affiliate leagues to scout their ranks is very welcome.
This is indeed a major move by the AFL Development Dept for our game overseas. One can hear the sound of pennies dropping at AFL House from here.
No doubt the AFL Clubs have behind the scenes laid out their complaint- Where is the talent coming from in the drafts of 2010, 2011, 2012 – It will be all going to the new clubs.
Well sort of like that – International Rookies will be the new buzz word.
However it is a little early in “the born to the game cycle” for international recruits – Another 5 years on would have been better but we will take it.
All in all a very good decision, and its not going to cost the AFL Hawks a fortune to set up, in relation to their total annual expenses

The announcement above that 4 new AFL Academies will be set up in the northern states from now has started a flurry of speculation from the 4 clubs involved.
Michael Voss Coach of the AFL Brisbane Lions says – “Bring it on” we need more talent.
We knew about AFL Fiji being set up and the AFL Western Bulldogs club also scouting in Fiji.
A closer look at the Polynesian and Islander talent in the countries immediately east of Australia will also be undertaken by the 4 clubs above.
Overseas sports fans should be aware that in the 2 Rugby Codes in Australia and NZ that talent features prominently in their sports.
It’s also a fact that in the GWS18 area the Rugby League Clubs from juniors up have big numbers of this talent playing. What happens to those not from that background –That’s a moot point.
Historically Aussie Rules footy has never got involved in this area in a big way but things are changing.
One aspect has been the body types not suitable for our sport – However that is no longer valid according to the AFL scouts, who say they now look a lot more closely at the prospects...
Again it is the setting up of career pathways and the AFL can offer a professional career in a sport played before big crowds.

An article from AFLNZ on the recent VAFA U18 v NZ U20 Matches. Lots of good stuff is going to happen in the future for our game in NZ after many indifferent years, in which the game never got much traction.
The growth of the U20 ranks over there since 2007 albeit from a low base is very encouraging.

    International Expansion---

Construction of the redevelopment of the Carrara Oval on the Gold Coast commenced recently. There is a video link which shows the old scoreboard getting demolished.
    Link---
    http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/10/31/153851_sport.html
In addition to the new oval other side benefits have also been outlined as quoted elsewhere--- (Quote)
“The $126 million redevelopment is anticipated to inject $415 million into the local economy over 10 years and create up to 950 full-time jobs during construction.”

We were not aware that AFLPNG held the 5 week Super Series in Port Moresby after the end of their regular season.
Four Port Moresby senior teams are filled with the best U23 talent that has played in Australia plus other senior players and compete for the Cup. The AFL QLD club Coolangatta will offer 2 players a contract with their team on the Gold Coast.

Majak Daw is a name not well known in AFL circles – But it might be.
This player is Sudanese migrant who started playing our game in Melbourne 4 years ago.
Several AFL clubs are looking closely at him in the Nov 22 Draft.
Here is a video showing some of his footy efforts – We think he has bit of potential and the club favoured to pick him up is North Melbourne- Will they or anybody else take a punt on this guy.
He is mentioned as the first African born sportsman likely to play our game at the AFL level. Well we know of an Ex Rugby white South African youth who is a giant in build and will be at the AIS/AFL Camp in Canberra in November- His South African Rugby coach has sent him over to try out. There are three other South African standouts also attending the camp.
Apparently AFL South Africa has been meeting with the other footy codes over there about their talent search, and have been conducting kicking the football courses with the Rugby Clubs.
Will be interesting to see how it all works out.

AFL Global Ambassador at large Kevin Sheedy has thrown his support behind the recruiting move into New Zealand and Fiji and other Pacific countries.
If Sheeds gets his projections right the International Rookie List above will have more names on it by 2012.

The Monash University based in Melbourne has a branch operating in South Africa.
The SA branch has earlier this year set up lifestyle courses for the Aussie Rules Staff and volunteers attached to AFL South Africa, whose numbers are growing healthily each year.
This is good grassroots development by AFLSA and the Uni.

    International Expansion---
Karmichael Hunt the NRL star switching over to AFL in 2010 made our TV screens last week.
He was interviewed in Southern France while training with his Rugby Union Club – Biarritz. The interviewers asked him straight out – Is it a publicity stunt you switching to AFL.
His reply was – No I am doing this for my own development and career and for my family.
If Biarritz do not make the finals he will be back about April/May next year.
Hunt has a blog from France running on the Gold Coast Club site.

A new era for AFL footy is being born right now. With a shrinking or static AFL talent pool domestically due to many reasons – The focus on International recruits will grow.
Go back just 6 or 7 years and apart for a few Irishmen recruited there was no interest at all in the offshore activities of our game except from the committed expats and locals overseas playing the sport. There were many false starts at that time.

A good pick up for the Gold Coast Club – Another Ablett from a famous footy family has joined them. Nathan the brother of current Brownlow Medallist – Gary Ablett.
Nathan Ablett will add some valuable AFL game time experience to the young squad.

We revisit the 2009 9 a side EU Cup again. This time there is an article that includes comments on each Pool and the results for the 15 teams.
Although only 9 a side it’s a start with more Cups to come.
Remember folks there were 15 teams attended however another similar number of non attending Continental Europe countries are now up and running in some way.
It appears that suitable multiple venues in one location only may limit the size of this comp in the future.
Another point is that most players in Europe have NEVER actually attended an AFL game – The London AFL Exhibition games held at The Oval were usually filled with AFL Rookie players and were valuable in that aspect. – But those matches have been discontinued it is thought because of lack of AFL club interest.

We reported earlier that The Durban University of Technology in South Africa has now officially incorporated our game into their sports curriculum.
Here is the announcement, which continues the momentum over there.
Realistically the DUT Aussie Rules Footy organiser/s have much work to do and are looking for resources and players.
Interesting to note that also moves being made for DUT Aussie Rules organisers to take the game to local schools in the area.
Since the article appeared in mid year several students have taken the game up and one standout player played in the 2009 AFLSA Inter-Provincial Champs for the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial team. (The Western Cape Province won the Champs.)

    West Sydney Expansion---
AFL Football Ambassador Kevin Sheedy has been appointed as the first Coach of the West Sydney Club.
Some fans say a masterstroke for Publicity purposes but his coaching career was up in the air when he finished at AFL Essendon Club.
The appointment starts immediately and is for 3 years until the end of the 2012 season, and he will move his family into the area in the New Year.
It is likely he will establish the squad and guide it in its first season of AFL in 2012, then move on. It will be interesting to watch his appointments of assistants in the Clubs football department.
We liked the comments in the video about that area being a heartland of “Immigration” and that is the demographic they will target.
This story has been given wide publicity across all the media in Australia – All sports fans now know about it.

Re: AFL Expansion now has three possibilities

    AFL International Rookies---
We will update this topic as changes occur. Consider this point---
    In 2012 there will be 18 clubs – 18 x 24 = 432 possible players to be picked up over a 3 year period.
We are tipping that International recruiting "may" step up a gear or two – Particularly if they are based in their own home countries, however the AFL Western Bulldogs are the trailblazers in this respect- Last reports said that it was not entirely successful – Their two Fijian players were not as fit as they should be after nearly 12 months in the program.
One player travelled to Melbourne for the Bulldogs 2009 pre-season then returned home.
The other player remained in Fiji because he could not travel to Melbourne for various reasons.

The basic revised rules for these Rookies are –
Each Rookie is paid $1000 per year if remaining in home country.
Each Rookie is paid $20,000 per year if brought to Australia
Each AFL Club is able to recruit 24 Rookies (Not Irish) over a 3 year period
Each AFL Club is restricted to 2 Irish Rookies??? (Min Age 18) – GAA agreement
Each Rookie is not included in each Clubs salary cap.
