The draw will be held on Jan 18th at 3:00 in the afternoon (Thai local time).

14 entries, including Thailand (host) and DPR Korea (reigning champions).

The 14 teams will be divided into two groups of 5 teams and one 4 team group.

Top team in each group qualify for semi-finals and the best second place team.

    A suggestion?

Root for anybody BUT North Korea. If they get in, then FIFA's gonna have a decision to make, whether or not to kick them out.

Re: Re: AFC Women's Championship info/draw

Probably won't matter in the long run as most of the participants in that field aren't up to North Korea's caliber. China, Chinese Taipei, South Korea and Japan probably stand the best chances to beat them while the rest may have to just hope for a monsoon and get a lucky bounce here or there.

Note the last couple tournaments: Asian Games

And how exactly is my "rooting" for any team actually going to affect the outcome of the tournament?

Here is a good site about Indian soccer...

It is probably your best shot at getting news about the Indian women's national team (for those who are interested).

Interesting indeed. With only the group winners and the best runner-up moving on, there could be some surprises in store. China will probably roll through Group C with Vietnam providing the best resistance.

Group B will most likely come down to Japan or Chinese Tapei and with both Koreas lurking in Group A the runner-up in that group could very well be out of the tournament.

This could make for very good watching ... provided one could see it, of course.

If there are any surprises, they will indeed be big surprises, because it's very easy to predict that China, Japan and the Koreas will advance.

Those four are so far above the others that it will take major upset to keep one of them out of the SF's.

I don't know if it's that cut and dried. Both Koreas will probably dominate in Group A, though Thailand might make some noise. As I said, China won't see a whole lot of resistance until the knockout stages as ASEAN champs Vietnam are the next best in that set.

Group B could be a bit dicier, though. Guam, Myanmar and the Philippines will most likely make up the numbers but Chinese Taipei won't be an easy out. Taipei lost 1-0 to both China and North Korea and 2-1 to South Korea at the Asian Games in 2002. If they remember to bring their offense to Thailand, they could make life very difficult for Japan.

DPRK should have little trouble taking this group. South Korea shouldn't have any trouble with either Singapore or Hong Kong, but a home Thai side might give it some trouble and may be enough to keep it from being the top second place side (a big loss to North Korea wouldn't help matters either.)

Japan and Chinese Taipei should have three easy wins here. Guam, Myanmar and the Philippines are all just plain awful. The winner of Japan-Chinese Taipei will win the group, the lose has a real good chance to be the second place qualifier.

Of the five good teams in the region, China got the easiest draw. Even on a bad day, they can beat all of these teams rather easily.

    Group A: North Korea
    Group B: Japan
    Group C: China
2nd Place advancer: Chinese Taipei (South Korea will take damage from both North Korea and Thailand)

Advancing to the World Cup will be China (automatic), North Korea and Japan. Chinese Taipei will play Mexico for the last spot in the World Cup.
