I may be biased about the selection for AFC player of the year 2002 so you can suggest me some. I can take out a candidate and replace it with someone else. I personally vote Hong for being the mental leader of the Korean team at the WC as well as being voted as a member of the World Cup All-stars added to the fact that he got the Bronze Ball award(Kahn took the Golden Ball, Ronaldo took the Silver Ball) last year's awards: http://www.asian-football.com/scripts/runisa.dll?M2:gp:169672:39913+inside/awards/01/index
I have a lot of respect for Hong, but his mistake in the Turkey game made me tip the hat to Ahn instead.
Baichung Bhutia I think India captain Baichung Bhutia deserves this years AFC Player of the Year Award. He was named AFC's Player of the Month September. Bhutia has impressed the Asian football secene with very good performances during India's two friendly matches against Jamaica and during the Asian Games. He plays also a key role the AFC Champions League campaign of Indian champions Mohun Bagan AC. Furthermore he is the the leading goalscorer in the AFC Champions League.
With all due respects to Indian Football, I don't think Bhutia is even in same class as Hong, Song or Inamoto. But of course I've never seen or even heard of him. I think Hong's World Cup Bronze Ball award speaks for itself. AFC Player of the Year award would be a great way to show respect for his service for not only Korean but Asian football as well.
Baichung Bhutia Profile: *Born: 15-12-1976 in Namchi, Sikkim *Height: 170 cms (5 feet 8 inch) *Weight: 69 kg *Played for: SAI Centre - Gangtok 1990-93; East Bengal - Calcutta 1993-95; JCT Mills - Phagwara 1995-97, East Bengal 1997-99, Bury FC (England) 1999-2002. *Playing Currently for: Mohun Bagan AC since 2002 *Playing position: Striker *Indian International since 1995 Honours: *youngest goal scorer for India in 1995, scoring the match-winner against Uzbekistan at the Nehru Cup * Indian Player of the Year 1996 * top scorer of the SAFF Cup 1999 * best player of the SAFF Cup 1999 * Voted "Asian Player of the month" for the month of May 1999 and September 2002 * first Indian player to be transferred to a European professional club * received the Arjuna Award 1999 (India's highest Award for sportsmen & sportswomen) * first Asian-born player to score a goal in the history of professional English football (April 15, 2000) That was little introduction to Baichung Bhutia
Thank you for the information Indian Football. But if you were one of the voter for the AFC Player of the Year, would you REALLY vote for Bhutia over Hong? or even Song, Ahn, Inamoto or Ono? What English team did Bhutia play for? Currently all the players I mentioned above scored goals for top European first division teams except for Hong. Hong had his chance to go to FC Barcelona but he decided to join a J-League team instead. I can understand your love for your country and players but Bhutia as the AFC Player of the Year? Come on.
I voted for Hong also, because of his superior performances during the world cup, whithout Korea would have never reached so much as they did (corrrect sentence?). His mistake against Turkey can be ignored in my eyes, even Kahn made one. And this was his worst and the one with the biggest aftermath. Nevertheless he was awarded with the golden ball, so I think we can excuse that dummy mistake of Hong. BTW; I think korean named are written with the last-name before the firstname, like this: Hong Myung-Bo, and Ahn Jung-Hwan. Am I wrong or KF?
I think AFC player of the year 2002 is about player's overral performances in 2002, not just worldcup. I had hard time picking between Song, Ono and Inamoto.(how come seol is not up there?) BTW India football. I think 170cm tall is like 5 foot 7 inch tall(or slightly less).
I was following the western way so that the non-Korean users won't get confused. Seriously, the media(even the American ones) needs to change when it comes to Korean names. I still hear "Kim Dae Jung" in American media. We should unify the whole law and make it clear what's the surname.
O.K. There are a few, who aren't posted here, but in this selection I would say Hong. And yes, especially because of the world cup, because it was the biggest and toughest event this year. @KoreanFootball: I bought a book about the world cup, written by a famous german commentary and even in his book, published in whole Germany, he writes Chun-So Lee and so on. Besides, he believes that Korea made it to the world cup only two times(correct:1958, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002). I have a t-shirt of Ahn Jung-Hwan, on which his name is written in the wrong way, too. And think about this, it is published by PUMA all around the world, so they should take care of what they do and inform themselves. I believe our World Cup announcers (USA) said it right, but I do remember the Winer Olympic ones doing it wrong. Just remember American's are lazy and if the surname is written first, that's what we'll say first, because that's what we know.
hard to pick...and i'm not going to pick one because i'm not qualified to say who's better. like me, i really don't think a lot of people here have seen all the candidates play (not once, but regularly). --it's like some people say windows is better than linux when in fact they have never used linux-- but i think people tend to have varying opinions on who is better (e.g. bhutia vs. hong). all this is affected by media hype and what we read on the net. well, that's my thought anyway
He won MVP award in k-league then he went to Perugia, he wanst like nobody before worldcup. (like Kim NamIl, Choi JinChul) He didnt participated in Olympic, maybe thats why he didnt get much spotlights like others. (he was kinda too young to play in 1996, and too old to play in 2000)
Yes I know. That's what I really liked about the ESPN announcers. They got it sharp. I was actually very impressed at their accuracy and clarity compared to that Univision guys calling almost ALL the Korean players' names wrong.
Bhutia and Ahm my favourite Hi dcunited4life. I would vote for Bhutia if I could, because I'm an Indian. You are right if you say, that other players did more in the last months. But Bhutia is the first Indian player who has a realistic (but small) chance to get this award. Another favourite is Ahn. He played very well in the WC. Bhutia played for Bury FC. That's a club from the Manchester area. Bury played a friendly match against a full-strenght ManU side in January or February (I'm not sure). Bhutia impressed Sir Alex and the media. He was able to confuse the ManU defenders and outplayed Silvestre. After that he got injured and had to sit out the the rest of the season. After recovery he had no more chance to play for Bury and he had to search for a new club. He had several offers to play in the MLS, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. But he decided to go back to India and joined Indian champions Mohun Bagan AC. Bhutia is planning to return to Europe in about two years.
Re: Bhutia and Ahm my favourite indian brother if its about confusing or dribling bhutia cant even come close to ALI KARIMI but look where ali is.
Your using the Western order actually confused me. I would rather see Chinese and Korean (and Japanese for that matter) names in their native order. It is still amazing how many otherwise well-informed Americans refer to President Diem of Viet Nam (his name was Ngo Dinh Diem). Viet Nam has the same naming customs as China, Korea, and Japan,
You think that's bad? Li Weifeng's everton shirt name is Feng, i think. Imagine Song chong gug having "gug" on the back of his shirt.
Wow, i was confused too. The Koreans actually prefer their names back to front in the western format?
