Great result for debutant TSW Pegasus. Itaparica and Gerard Ambassa Guy scored after Song Lam had a player sent off for his second bookable offense on Leandro Carrijo.

First shock of this competition. I am really dissapointed as Sriwijaya could not converted many of clear chances though they missed out the likes of Okto, Firman, Thierry and others starters.

    No ifs, just Butt

South China coach Chan Ho-yin is targetting the maximum nine points from his side's three home games in the AFC Cup group stage, starting with tonight's clash against Indonesian outift Persipura Jayapura at Hong Kong Stadium.

And with the visiting team's defense expected to focus on high-profile overseas signings Mateja Kezman and Nicky Butt, Chan is relying on homegrown players led by striker Chan Siu-ki to score and get the Caroliners' campaign in Group H off to a flying start.

"Our opponents will have specific players to mark Kezman and Butt, hopefully that will leave some space for the local players to score," Chan said.

TSW Pegasus, Hong Kong's other representative in the competition, needed two late goals to beat Vietnam's Song Lam Nghe An 2-1 in Group F last night.

An 85th-minute strike by Gerard Ambassa Guy won it for Pegasus after Brazilian Itaparia had scored a penalty equalizer five minutes earlier.

South China boss Steven Lo Kit-sing admits the club face a tough task repeating their run to the second round last season despite the addition of Butt and Kezman.

"Other teams will be more motivated to beat South China now because of the presence of our two stars," Lo said.

"It will be even harder to qualify for the next round."

Butt has declared himself 100 percent fit for the match after returning to training following a calf strain.

Indonesian international Boaz Theofilius Erwin Salossa and fellow midfielder Zah Rahan Krangar have been pinpointed as Persipura's dangermen.

Chonburi of Thailand and East Bengal of India complete the group.

What a bad result for Persipura. However, they deserved it.. they played very bad. Nicky Butt showed good movement in the middle. How he maintains his physical strength ?

    Home hero spares Caroliners blushes

    Thursday, March 03, 2011

Chan Siu-ki spared South China blushes as he scored the equalizer in the 1-1 draw against Persipura Jayapura of Indonesia in their AFC Cup opener at Hong Kong Stadium last night.

Cheered on by a crowd of 9,558, the Caroliners played attacking football but could not convert their chances until the 59th minute when Chan scored on a header from a cross by Mateja Kezman.

The hosts were nearly left to rue their wastefulness as Boas Theofilus Erwin Salossa put Persipura ahead in the 39th minute of the Group H match.

"The team did well and created many chances but we were unlucky to score," Kezman said.

Coach Chan Ho-yin added: "We really wanted to win this match but our finishing was not very good."

Chan lavished praise on Kezman for playing a pivotal role in his side's attack, adding that he expects the Serbian striker to be a huge asset in future group games, starting with their March 16 match at Chonburi of Thailand.

    NG KA-KI

My note: Gate receipt HK$620,420. About US$80,000.

South China more or less dominated the game, but the players lacked confidence in finishing and fell behind to a good goal by Salossa. South China could've been two goals behind if an earlier Persipura effort didn't hit the bar.

In the second half South China came back strongly and Kezman centred for Chan Siu-Ki to score with an easy header. South China kept pushing forward but the winning goal never came.

Both Poon Yew-Cheuk and Nicky Butt had to leave the game due to injuries. Steven Lo said Butt is fine and should be back to training in a few days. No news about Poon.

This video's aspect ratio is a bit funny and has some Bundesliga action afterwards, but this is the best I can find so far.

thx for the highlight man. Two thumbs up for South China Team. They've played with determination, their right wing played a great game last night also Nicky Butt was so dominant. I think Persipura was underestimate South China and quite surprised with the South China playing style. On the other hand Persipura was playing under their normal form, last night they cannot get out and play relax because of the good pressure by the south china team. Overall I must say last night was a good game.

was it after the game of before the game? because when I watched through out the game, the South China fans were taunting Persipura Players and even a bit racist by making a monkey's voice when Boaz Salossa Scored the goal. AFC should punished that guy anyway..A disgrace to Indonesian Football!

Many indonesian newspapers had said TSW coach is arrogant and underestimated Sriwijaya. He even had already claimed a spot in round 16. Perharps, TSW defeat (1-2) from Sriwijaya at home can lead him to re-assess his squad and their strength.

Both Nicky Butt and Mateja Kezman are fit to play tonight against Chonburi. Steven Lo's blog said Chonburi expects a full house of 6,000 at the stadium tonight.
