Gimme a break! No Mahdavikia as a finalist? What kind of biased BS is this? The guy has been a consistent performer each Saturday for Hamburg who is still fighting for that last champions league spot. Oh by the way M.M. Kia is leading the Bundesliga in assists. Since their performances in the world cup, what the heck have Inamoto or Ahn done? This is the biggest joke I've seen.

    Uhhhhh . . . Lets see . . ..

I seem to recall that both of them scored goals in some tournament or other that happened in 2002. I cant remember the name of it, just now, because Iran didnt take part, and so I wasnt paying attention. Can anyone help me out?

PS: Pardon the sarcasm, but the AFC awards almost ALWAYS reward players who did something at the NT level. You never see someone win it because of their performances for their club team. Also, dont forget that this is the award for 2002. Anything that players did in 2003 doesnt count.

would Inamoto's hat trick to other goals in the Intertoto cup to single handedly get Fulham into the UEFA Cup be considered an accomplishment?

And as Matsu said, those two scored some of the biggest and most important goals of the season for their National Teams!

Well, M.Kia is a very good player, there's no doubt about that. If he keeps in fantastic form like this, I am sure he will most likely get the AFC player of the year award in 2003. His performance in this season was superb and had impressed me a lot!

    To be honest,

Whatever I think of the nominees, it doesn't change the fact that I have nothing but apathy and contempt for the AFC's awards. So in that sense, you're right, it's a joke.

Liked all awards, the World Cup Finals always stole all the votes. Ronaldo is the FIFA Pklayer iof the Year. Li Tie is strange one. He got nomination based of his club performance.

I thought Mahdavikia deserved his place. I actuallky thought he should be the AFC player of the year a few years ago.

Li Tie is nominated for his club performance? What did he do for Everton?

Re: Re: AFC Annual Awards are a complete joke

Let's see......It's called player of the YEAR, not player of the month, i.e. June 2002. Do you think in a non-world cup year, all four of these players would have been nominated? AFC is still looked upon as a joke because of not only talent (which could be argued either way), but also due to its biases. In 1998, it was all about Iran and its players who were going to plow over European leagues and now it's Japan/Korea. For some reason, I'm not convinced. You can't base much on how the future will unfold based on a 5-7 match performance however great or poor it was unless you give up 8 goals like KSA in which case I say good luck.

Then, Sun should be nominated before him. Perhaps, Mahdavikia also....

Li Tie was a solid starter for Everton, came up with a number of assists, and surprised a lot of people. Without him, Everton, themselves, couldn't have been the surprise team they were. Li Tie's play and Everton's success makes him a bit more high profile than Sun Jihai. Though Sun was a solid defender, one of Man City's best players, and the first Chinese to score a Premiership goal, the reality is that he's a good defender as compared to the crap that Man City has around him, whereas Li Tie has shown that he's poised to do great things in the Premiership. I'm hopeful he'll win the award, but he is up against some tough competition, that did a lot nationally and on their club teams, however, China's impotence at the World Cup absolutely cannot be blamed on Li Tie, who isn't a scorer to begin with...
ps: A transfer to Newcastle would be fantastic for him, as it gives him a chance to gain even more exposure.

These awards are for the year 2002. It is typical AFC to award them in June of the following year. No doubt in my mind that Mahdavekia is a leading candidate for 2003.

Re: Re: Re: AFC Annual Awards are a complete joke

    Yes, I do.

As several people besides me have already noted, and you seem to STILL be ignoring, this award is for 2002!!!!

In 2002, Ono led his team to the UEFA Cup championship.
In 2002. Inamoto led his team to the Intertoto Cup Championship.
In 2002, Ahn scored several goals at Perugia and was one of the eye-openers for Asians in Serie A.
In 2002, Li Tie was in his first year at Everton and surprised everyone by winning a starting spot.

That is in ADDITION to the performances of all four at the World Cup. And if you cant understand why the AFC pays so much attention to the World Cup, maybe you are on the wrong message board. Any football fan who thinks that any other event has any significance at all, next to the World Cup, needs to have their priorities examined . . .

If this was about 2003 (which it isnt), not only would I agree that Mahdavikia deserves to be there, but also Ono and Inamoto hardly did anything at all this year. Surely Nakamura deserves to be there instead of them! And if I chose a Korean player it wouldnt be Ahn. Most likely Song or Park would be better choices.

But the awards are NOT for 2003, as people have repeated at least ten times on this thread. Now get that through your thick head and quit making meaningless arguments.

Mahdavikia did well for Hamburg in 2003.

    This award is for 2002.
Plus, you gotta face it. World Cup is a too much of a big tournament compared to....whatever you're trying to compare with.

Mahdavikia should be a candidiate for 2003.

nope, it's the UEFA Cup. Champions League is not possible for Hamburg.

By the way, Shinji Ono led Feyenoord to winning the UEFA Cup in 2002 which Hamburg is desperate even to qualify to.

umm, Hamburg does have a chance to qualify for Champions Leauge, Stuttgart has to lose their next match, and Hamburg has to beat Rostock by 4 goals. And HSV is not "desperate" to qualify for UEFA Cup......

    1.FC Bayern München 75
    2 Borussia Dortmund 57
    3.VfB Stuttgart 56
    4.Hamburger SV 53
    5.Werder Bremen 52
    6.Hertha 51

4th and 5th place go to UEFA cup, and HSV is in 4th place, I didnt know that made them desperate, for a UEFA Cup spot, lol. And dont forget that Kia was injured for much of the begining of the season, if he played the entire season no doubt that HSV would have secured a CL spot, but too bad he was injured.

And Ahn scored 5 goals for Perugia in 29 matches. That is not too good of a record for a striker.....

I was referring to Mahdavikia's interview that qualifying to UEFA Cup is what he wants for the remainder of the year. He once said that he will not consider to move as long as HSV qualifies to the UEFA Cup.

Still does not deviate from the fact that Shinji Ono led his team to the UEFA Cup Championship.

Re: Re: Re: Re: AFC Annual Awards are a complete joke

    Hey Genius,

    Congratulations on your cheesy arguments:

"In 2002. Inamoto led his team to the Intertoto Cup Championship."

Super! What a great achievement. I guess that really would have secured his place in the list even if there had been no world cup. Oh and did you mention that he did nothing before (w/ Arsenal) or after the Intertoto which I'm sure is right up there with the best of them.

"In 2002, Ahn scored several goals at Perugia and was one of the eye-openers for Asians in Serie A."

Look, just because you wish a guy does well, it doesn't mean he DID do well. 5 goals hardly justifies his inclusion into the list. Oh and did you forget to mention that you've probably been more effective on the pitch in your Sunday league matches than Ahn after the cup?

"In 2002, Li Tie was in his first year at Everton and surprised everyone by winning a starting spot."

Ok, so gaining a starting spot on a team that finished 6th or 7th in the EPL automatically merits a nomination? And lest not forget that this would be for 1/2 a season since you KEEP reminding the world that this great award is for the YEAR 2002, not 2003. Good job.

Fact is that this award reflects the world cup performaces and really not much else except for Ono (and I'll admit Li Tie to a certain extent) as good, effective performances were put forth consistently. Argue what you want, but this isn't about the year 2002 vs. 2003. Ronaldo won POTY award shortly after the cup even though he had done next to nothing before the cup (4 years).

    The greatest point of all:

"And if you cant understand why the AFC pays so much attention to the World Cup, maybe you are on the wrong message board."

Ah, yeah. This is what I'm arguing in the first place genius. That the awards a biased towards the cup perfomances. This is my entire point sonny. Whether or not this is correct or fair is subject to opinion since they are ANNUAL awards. I think it's unfair, you obviously don't. Great let's move on, but you can't just make the claim that I'm missing the point of the award because you're AGREEING with me.

Now do you want to repeat your "armument" again for a 11th time or offer something new.

    cheers,

    thickheaded man

Li Tie was rewarded with the nomination because he was the "first" Asian player to secure a starting position in the EPL. It supposed to be a milestone for Asian players. That alone would be an automatically merit. I thought that one of the three EPL-based players deserved to be candidates. All three did a major break through in Asian football. Of course, we cannot nominate all three. So Li got the nod.

But if I am on the AFC selection committee, I would have put Sun, instead of Li. Inamoto got in for WC performance. I had no problem with that.

And I'm willing to agree with that. Infact I elude to that fact somewhat in my previous post:

"Fact is that this award reflects the world cup performaces and really not much else except for Ono (and I'll admit Li Tie to a certain extent) as good, effective performances were put forth consistently."

It's more about week in and week out performances, not a string of 5 matches.

Ahn was injured quite frequently during his most recent year in Perugia. I notice that you don't mention a thing about Ahn's assisting because Ahn assisted a LOT more than he scored during his career in Perugia. I understand you because people tend to ignore assists, but then again, it was that very assisting ability that made Mahdavikia seem so good to you right? How many goals did Mahdavikia score in 2002? or maybe even 2003?

for someone who claims to accept the difference in opinions, you seem to be putting him down too much.

Actually, i think Ahn scored only a total of 4 goals in the 2000/2001 season and 1 goal in the 2001/2002 season. So thats a total of 5 goals and not 10 goals. And I think its a given fact that Rahman's performance at Perugia was way better than Ahn's. Ahn was reduced to nothing more than a sub in the 2001/2002 season, and 5 goals in total from 2 seasons of play is not the sign success form any forward. But this is club level only. I think Ahns main reason for qualification is his WC performance.

Mahdavikia really showed himself in 2003, and not 2002. Its really obvious that players who made noise in the World cup would show up as nominees for Asian player of 2002 because thats the same year which the WC was played.

However, one thing that did surprise me before was when Mahdavikia scored goals in the CL against Juventus and Deportivo and excelled in the Bundesliga, yet he didnt become a nominee for Asian Player of the Year. But that was is 2000 so maybe AFC put more emphasis on the Asian Cup.

However, it still seems that AFC doesnt have a real criteria set for picking nominees. Do they look for National Team performance or Club performance? Can a club performance be considered greater than a national team performance due to the increased level of competition and importance of the cup (like Champions League over Asian Cup)?
