Hi, I am 17 years old and live in the UK. I recently took the SAT reasoning test and acheived a 1060, I also have very high grades in my studies at my college in the UK. I would like to apply for some sort of soccer scholarship in the US however I am not sure where to apply? I dont have the greatest soccer credentials however i have very good coach references from my current soccer teams by very well respected coaches. I would like to play soccer in the US for a good unversityhowever as i understand the standard is very high. Could anyone offer me any advice to which unversities i should apply to bearing in mind i would like to play at the highest level possible but also be a key player in the team. Any help would be much appreciated, cheers. Marklpool

You might check out www.firstpointusa.com. Located in Glasgow, it would give you a better understanding of connecting to the NCAA coaches via this service. If you choose to go it alone, then check out www.soccerinfo.com and you will have access to college websites at the DI,DII, DIII, and others. Be realistic, email the coaches of the teams which match your caliber and make your case.

    Cheers,

noone was responding to the last post? i would recommend trying division two as i said in a serious note they are probably some of the only teams that will waste a scholarship on you. and you don't 'apply' for a soccer scholarship, you talk to the coach and work something out. as you can see by looking at that website the one guy sjust gave the scholarship consulting thing or what not almost all of those players are playing D2 or NAIA, not what you think your good enough to be a 'key' player at a D1....focus on those schools and then maybe you can eventually transfer to a bigger school in the lower tiers of D1. I hate to say it D1 is all about your credentials if you can prove to them your good enough by shining somewhere else first then maybe...but you won't get any money whatsoever by simply saying i think i'm good and i have a friend who does too...not to be rude but its the truth get mad all you want you could be zidane but having only played men's league and no youth team when lets face it if your good at a young age in england you play youth team its not like the opportunites aren't there don't lie....you won't get anywhere w/o any credentials you've had 17 years to get them so you're a little behind the curve bud.

You also might want to look into going to a junior collage with a good soccer program. It will be cheaper then most of the 4 yr schools and a better way to get recruited.

Listen "Rockhillman" I play soccer for a team full of ex YTS players from all pro clubs and match there standard. I understand what you are saying but to be honest you don't know me, my situation or recruitment in England by what you've said because everyone here knows that to get scouted for a pro club is far from easy as you have made out and you must be extremely lucky. I know i can cut it at any level, it's just getting there and the people who can give me references are not just friends but well respected coaches as i said above so please dont just say things "Rockhillman". However i understand what you are saying that it is all about crodentials due to the competitiveness of university soccer recruitment in the US. This is why i am asking for advice, also if any coaches are familiar with soccer in the Liverpool area of the UK may understand my situation better, please any more advice would be appreciated. Cheers, Marklpool

I'd suggest getting an SAT prep book, study up a bit, and then take it again. If you are getting good grades you probably should be able to do better than 1060, which is around a level that would make you a borderline academic case for many universities before even factoring in your soccer ability.

The university I played for (IPFW) has already been recruiting english players for 5 or six years now. They are a new Div I NCAA school, and have only competed at that level for 3 years now, but already are posting .500 seasons. The strength of the team is in it's young players, so I think the coach would not only be open to recruiting you, but because of the young nature of the team you have a fair to even chance of playing right away.

I will pm you with the details if you're interested and put you into contact with the assisitant coach Mike Harper. He was a teamate of mine in college and will tell you what is going on with recruits for next year. The head coach Terry, is a solid coach with many connections, so they should be able to give you a realistic idea of what to expect.
