This is just based on my thoughts and for the record, I'm an American soccer fan who wants this sport to do well in the States. The primary thing I've noticed aside from soccer being unpopular because to most Americans it is boring and slow. There are also advertising guys who say that the sport has a very limited advertising spot due to lack of commercial airtime. What American advertisers fail to see is that if they take a good look at a European soccer match they will notice that a lot of teams are walking billboards and that the fans are in that form also. What these advertisers would realize that with the fans they are getting a free advertisement when a fan buys that team's jersey. For example, my Sao Paolo jersey has a HUGE LG logo on the front. That'll be the first thing people see on the jersey. People also tend to remember the company names after watching their favorite team for a time. Example: When my dad went off on business to Brazil, he had to get a different phone service, the service he got was Vodafone, Manchester United's old sponser. That instantly came to my head when I saw the service. If this form of reasoning came to the idea of those in the NFL, NHL, MLB, or NBA; companies would save quite a bit on advertising in the long run. However, Americans are overloaded on commercials in sports and wish to keep the uniforms pure but when a team owner realizes that they need money they may be willing to put a company on the jersey. American advertisers need to learn that there will be less commercial time in soccer but they can do quite a bit if they advertise on jerseys.
