    Renato Gaúcho

Renato Gaúcho (Renato Portaluppi) was a right winger who ranks among the most iconic Brazilian attackers of the 1980s and 1990s. Renato was just as famous for his rockstar persona off the pitch as he was for his exploits on it. His rebellious nature famously cost him a spot in the 1986 World Cup when manager Telê Santana dropped him from the squad right before the tournament for breaking curfew.

Match played one year after his controversial drop from the national team, in the 1987 tournament in which he was voted the best player in Brazil, facing Atlético Mineiro coached by Telê Santana—the manager who had cut him.

Pablo Aimar vs Liveroool FC (UCL 2002/2003)

In 2002, Valencia CF was one of Europe's most formidable teams under manager Rafa Benítez. Pablo Aimar, nicknamed "El Payaso" (The Clown), was the creative heartbeat of the squad. At just 22 years old, the Argentinian playmaker was at the peak of his agility, vision, and technical brilliance, carrying the weight of Valencia's attacking transition. Pablo Aimar was the childhood idol of Lionel Messi.

    Match 1: Valencia 2-0 Liverpool (Home - Mestalla | Sept 17, 2002)
Aimar put on an absolute masterclass in Spain. He orchestrated the tempo, leaving Liverpool's defense completely disorganized. In the 20th minute, he initiated and finished a breathtaking, quick-passing combination right through the center of the box, slotting a low shot past Jerzy Dudek. He was substituted to a standing ovation in the 71st minute.

    Fouls Won 4 (0:08, 0:36. 1:00, 2:12)
    Comitted Foul 0
    Possession lost 5

    Match 2: Liverpool 0-1 Valencia (Away - Anfield | Oct 30, 2002)
In the return leg, Aimar proved his tactical maturity. Starting once again, he absorbed the physical pressure of the English midfield, using his elite spatial awareness to retain possession. He helped Valencia dictate play in hostile territory, securing a historic away win that knocked Liverpool out of the tournament.

Dalglish received an 8 from Match Magazine for that one
    [IMG]
As shown on DBS Calcio he received a 9 for the same fixture in the following season (but same calendar year), though only game highlights are on Youtube so you couldn't make an attempt with that one on this thread:

Match Formations (Liverpool-Tottenham 82/83 grades - so he was deemed MOTM - [edit: or at least Star Player for LIverpool - the returning Ray Clemence in Tottenham's goal also received a 9] - in that one but not the 81/82 one)

That's a nice addition (I guess there can be some doubt as to whether it's all actions given final goal missing, but it's extensive at least - on a similar note the Bozsik video will be missing just a few minutes of the game and whatever action he had during it just because the live broadcast lost the feed for those minutes of the famous game at Wembley btw) - to Youtube and for your thread.

He could be compared role/function wise to a cross between 1970s Cruyff and Tottenham-era Berbatov perhaps in that one, I'd think. He's a bit more lively physically, and consequently a bit sharper technically too perhaps at that stage than during the World Cup in the summer? He's playing vs a team that was playing the Intercontinental Final not long before that game of course, and suffers a few fouls but still has a very good and effective display. Maybe interesting to compare to a good choice from around a decade later, back as River Plate player?

It was a great find regarding Dalglish's performance. If you have a suggestion of another name with a high rating in the English press and a video on YouTube, I can try do that as well.

I also intend to cover Enzo Francescoli during his second peak at River Plate (he won two Best Player of the Americas awards in 1984 and 1996). One difference with Enzo in the clubs compared to Sofascore, which only covered the two World Cups he played (1986 and 1990) where he didn’t perform as well, is that in the matches I analyzed Enzo had 84% and 92% passing accuracy (in the World Cup he was below 80%: 79% in 1986 and 69% in 1990). Perhaps he managed to be a better rhythmic at the clubs than with the Uruguayan national team, which played a more direct style of football.
